Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault in Bristol in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 16th September 2009.

At approximately 4am, police were called to a disturbance near a bar in Park Street. A 29 year male had suffered a serious head injury and it is believed he may have been struck over the head with one or more bottles. He has been taken to Frenchay hospital and is receiving treatment for a suspected fractured skull.

A 25 year old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody.

"The club has just been made aware of an incident involving a Bristol Rovers player, which is now the subject of an internal investigation. Until this is complete the club will be making no further comment."

Bristol Rovers midfielder David Pipe has been arrested on suspicion of bottling a man and fracturing his skull.

The 25-year-old was taken in for questioning following and incident on Park Street in Clifton in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police were called at about 4am to a fight outside a Spar shop and Antix bar.

The victim, a 29-year-old man, was taken to Frenchay Hospital with a fractured skull. He remains in a serious condition, but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Police confirmed that a 25-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of assault, causing grievous bodily harm.

He was bailed on Wednesday evening to reappear at a police station on September 28.

No one else was arrested in connection with the incident, and police are now waiting to interview the victim.

Kirsty Pugh, Bristol Rovers spokeswoman, said: "As yet the club is not fully aware of the facts surrounding the incident.

"The club is currently carrying out an internal investigation, and until this is complete the club will make no further comment."

Pipe signed for Rovers in July 2007 in a £50,000 move from Notts County.

The Welshman previously played for Coventry City and has captained the Wales under 21 team at international level.

Pipe has made 10 appearances for Rovers this season, including seven league matches, two Carling Cup matches and one Johnstone's Paint Trophy game.

Rovers' next match is on Saturday away at Brentford. It is not know if Pipe will be playing.

Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses, who should call 0845 456 7000, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

He has been known to the police before.

Pipe was arrested in February last year on suspicion of assaulting a Bristol City fan in a nightclub.

He was then alleged to have attacked a City fan during an altercation at Java nightclub on Park Street, where Rovers players and their partners had gone after the club Valentine's Ball at the Royal Marriott Hotel.

Despite his arrest he never faced charges over the incident.

Kirsty Pugh is Rovers's press officer and wasn't there a Kirsty Pugh, "journalist" who wrote all those pro stadium articles on Horfield, are they by any chance related?

Why would anyone ever think the "newspaper" has a bias to Rovers, then?
