I'm pretty sure Labour's 2005 manifesto was committed to keeping the royal mail in the public sector with no mention of detail. I do though stand to be corrected. Please provide a link.

New Labour were committed to keeping Royal Mail in the public sector in 2005 but New Labour were also totally committed to continuing European Union membership without consulting the British electorate. The EU want Royal Mail privatized and so the New Labour EU lackeys will privatize it so that the likes of the EU's DHL and TNT can then have it cheap.

The way forward is for the CWU Union to attack the likes of New Labour muppet puppet Adam Crozier. Adam Crozier is the second highest paid public sector boss on £1m + per year. Pensions and conditions in the Private Sector aint nowhere as good as the featherbedded ones in the Public Sector. There are less and less of us in said Private Sector these days, and most of them work for small companies or multinationals which keep wages low with the threat of moving. Get real and join the world outside big pay rises, pensions, featherbedded jobs aint gonna happen out there.

Currently my company has binned 20% of the workforce across the board, imposed an indefinite payfreeze, plus an overtime ban, as well as stopping works do's, cut travel for sales and management staff, and several company cars have been taken off the bosses. this means those of us left may just have a job in 6 months

There aint gonna be any workers solidarity from the Second and Third world when they get the jobs we all lose cos of high costs. They need jobs to live not go on holidays, get new cars, buy a house etc etc

Everyone is entitled to their opinion Bucksred but just remember that there are a hell of a lot of your fellow City supporters that work for the Royal Mail and they are also CWU Union members. I used to be a member of that Union when it was the UCW and I did question why my membership fees were being used to support the Labour Party at that time. Have it your way because the Daily Telegraph is spelling his name as 'Mandelson' not 'Mandy' or 'Mandelsohn'. The plot thickens because the recently released Simon Mann - ex SAS officer - as jailed for 34 years in July 2008 by a court in Equatorial Guinea for a failed attempt to overthrow President Teodoro Obiang in 2004 is spilling some more beans. Simon Mann said Calil, a friend of EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson, was the overall boss who financed the plot, which he alleged was to fly in a puppet leader from Spain after the mercenaries overwhelmed the presidential guard, seized the radio station and, if necessary, murdered Obiang.

as for the Post office being run by DHL, got no problem with that DHL are 10 times more efficient at delivering parcels, than the Post Office are. I don't give a flying one who runs it. TNT are part owned by Dutch Telecoms. most companies of the Post offices size are multi nationals these days.

The only shame is that we don't have a tradition, as Germany does of the "Mittelstand"- medium sized businesses, with no unionization, no shareholder stranglehold, innovative, flexible, usually less than 100 employees. to me, THATS the way forward. I just want to pop on here that how ironic it seems to us non postal workers that at the time of year when lots of temps are taken on for the Christmas rush that the striking posties have gone back in to work to collect not only the wages but the bonuses and overtime and 1 1/2-2 x the normal rate and so say hope to keep the jobs they have been striking for. i am not defending either side but lets face it we all are on the interweb now we all send email e cards im's the need for post is dying the only post i get is junk. banks offer financial reward as do phone tv and most companies now for paperless billing the Royal Mail is in its death throes not because of government but because of technology why post a letter that takes 3-4 days to arrive when an email is instant and modernisation is key to the mail service becoming more than a strain to the tax payer and even more of a frustration when said unions do strike.

I would argue that the British culture and heritage - that is the Royal Mail - should be preserved at whatever cost. If the cost of preserving our Royal Mail is the destruction of the European Union then so be it.
