good thread!

I would go for:-

Zoff

Carlos Alberto, Moore, Beckenbauer, Maldini

Maradona, Zidane, Matthaus, Cruyff

Pele, Ronaldo (fat one)

That midfield makes me strangely excited, there are only a few players from the modern era who should make these shortlists, and although they havent finished the best, Brazilian Ronaldo and Zidane were unbelievable talents. Maldini doesnt need any further justification. Lothar Matthaus was the about the best midfielder of the 1990s, and he is in to put some tackles in!

Subs, you could go on forever, but I would include

Van Basten, Kempes, Gullit, Charlton, Passarella, Romario, um?....

ah yes, I was thinking of world cup winners, but him and di stefano were awesome for real madrid.

Which makes me wonder about some of the greats that played for small countries that never had World Cup success, or maybe never even qualified. Just how good in world terms, were the likes of Pat Jennings, George Best, or Di Stefano (he never actually played in the WC finals)

A great player in his day was Charlie George and yet he never made it internationally.

Suprised at the inclusion of Dino Zoff, not a patch on Gordon Banks imo and if you were to hav a second choice it would have to be Lev Yashin - the guy had balls of steel compared to some of the ninnys that are around in the game today.

Platini Johnson Zico Ronaldo

Pele Maradonna

:sofa:

cheese, what are you on? Platini on the right wing will never work...

I am surprised that Gerrard is so highly rated. Good in the premier league, yes, good for england, yes decent enough, but to be considered an all time international great you have to be winning world cups, and be one of the stars who does it. Until the likes of Gerrard Roooney and Lampard do that they shouldnt be considered top world class players IMHO.

Put Platini on the right so I could have some space in the middle!! :innocent06:

When I first saw this thread 6 players immediately sprang to mind. In no particluar order - Pele, Johan Cruyff, Maradona, Platini. Beckenbauer and Moore. They are all in my World 11 but only two make into yours.

Amazing how we all see it so differently.

Now, the question was all time x1 that we'd like to see yes? so not necessarily the best or widely acclaimed...

GK: Chilavert, The keeper who scored goals galore! free kick specialist who would have been very entertaining to watch no doubt!

DR: Phil Neal, I was brought up on Liverpool video's and Neal was always bombing up the right hand side and scoring important goals. He would be the assigned penalty taker too.

CB: Allesandro Costacurta, Legendary centre back, solid tough tackling and decent on the deck.

CB: Taribo West, yeah the guy failed miserably in this country, but he did enough to play for some of the top teams in the world and is a character and a half!

DL: Roberto Carlos, Attacking full back with a deadly shot. Creative flair and pace. aggression was also a big part and he is the sort of player who would rouse the crowd with big challenge

RW: Ariel Ortega, the guy has always been one of my favourite players, typical south american winger, creativity and flair, one of the most exciting players i've watched

CM: Patric Viera, Legend. tough tackling powerful runner, the complete box to box midfielder and a man who again would rouse a crowd with a big challenge or powerful break away.

CM: Zinedine Zidane, No justification needed really, I watched a lot of spanish football thanks to "Skysports" and this guy is easily the best player I have ever seen. there was nothing he couldn't do with the football, and amazingly he could do it with both feet!

LW: John Barnes, Genius. simply a genius. he had the dribbling skills of a south american and the mental toughness of s true Brit!

CF: Marco Van Basten, nothing much you can say about this guy. creative flair and technical brilliance, so many wonder strikes, simply no place on the pitch was too far out for him to score!

CF: Ronaldo (Brazilian one), one of the best strikers this planet ever saw! pace, power and finishing ability.

SUBS

Robbie Fowler, one of the best finishers this country ever produced, he socred 98 goals in 3 seasons and that sort of abilty in front of goal plus his hilarious personna makes him a sure hit with any fans!

Denis Bergkamp, Creative flair up top.

Marc Overmars, Pacey winger.

Sami Hypiia, strong and uncompromising, arguably one of the best centrebacks in Premier league History.

Edgar Davids, tough midfielder.

god what i'd do to watch that team!

Easy.......John Atyeo and 10 other blokes.

What about the current worlds best X1 ?

Good players from any era will always be blessed with their natural skills, but the modern age players are fitter and faster. Some weeks I watch Arsenal or Real Madrid and simply shake my head.

I too was surprised at Gerrard getting a mention above a host of other players. A good player for sure. Worthy of an inclusion in an all time world XI? Not in a million years.

In addition, I don't subscribe to the argument that you need to be playing in World Cups, let alone be winning them, to be considered great.

Weah and Best: neither played in a World Cup finals, to the best of my knowledge, and both players good enough to be in contention for all time greats, Best certainly, Weah arguably. Zico never won the world cup, but his quality is also beyond question.

Again, only from players I've seen in my lifetime, and managed to take my Glenn Hoddle specs off too!

1. Zoff

2. Neville - much under rated, and hated for being Man Yoo. His partnership with Beckham made Becks looks as good as he did!

3. Maldini

4. Platini - even though he's turning out to be a right obnoxious git, still one of my boyhood heroes!

5. Butcher - not the classiest, but with all these fancy ball players, you're gonna need someone that won't give up!

6. Baresi

7. Ronaldo

8. Zidane

9. Lineker

10. van Basten

11. Zico

Was pondering this one on the walk to work this morning:

Banks or Yashin in goal.

Back 3 of Maldini, Beckenbauer, Baresi

Up front, Ronaldo in his Barcelona prime with Maradona and Cruyff behind him.

In midfield I was struggling, and concluded I'd shoe-horn Best, Zindane, Platini and Zico into it.

Don't see a need for workhorses and ball-winners. This lot would never concede the ball except for the other team kicking off after a goal and then being dispossessed soon thereafter.

As for subs, Muller (good shout above), Van Basten, Sanchez, Baggio, Puskas, Finney, Edwards, Moore, Carlos Alberto, Batistuta, Di Stefano, Boniek, Rivaldo the list goes on.

Gazza, had he not gone off the rails in the 1991 cup final and beyond, would be I think a name mentioned in the above company without any hint of humour.
