spudski
Did anyone else read LR's Article in the BEP this week? We've all said...'Why is it, that BCFC as a Club haven't been successful?'...and that 'Bristol as a City is too nice'...and 'Bristol is apathetic'. Well, it was intersting to read from a former BCFC player, that he too agreed. He mentioned, that Bristol was too nice a City for a Footballer to live in. That turning up for training at Failand, was a nice drive, no traffic jams, and that it was easy to switch off and not think about football. He said players start to think about other things, and Football doesn't become the 'be all and end all'. He mentioned, that for any manager, it would be especially hard to motivate the players. Something we've all thought and said... I wonder how we could change things. tbh...it seems the same for any Football Club that is in a 'Nice' area to live. Especially if you are in the Country or near the South Coast.

Jordan Tansley
Leroy (as is normal practice) clearly had nothing interesting or worthwhile to write this week and still needed his collumn fee. Really don't like him much, seems to be a very bitter man especially when talking about us or Torquay.

Thornbury Red
No, that the players are 'too nice' and hence as a team there is a soft underbelly which costs us time and time again. It's often said on the forum we lack leadership on the pitch, this is what he is saying.

citytype
I can't see it.... When players sign for man city/united they don't stick them in moss side make them wear a celice beat them twice a day and feed them on raw meat Think about what your saying, Premier League teams cosset their players with posh pads and state of the art training facilities And what a nice drive to failand is going to ruin there competitive edge?? Port Said Red
You would think that "Bristol being a nice play to live", would encourage the players to work harder to stay with the club and in the area.
spudski
Don't take his words literally, but look into the sentiment. It's not Rocket Science to see across the Country, that football Clubs like ourselves and in similar areas to ourself, have been less successful throughout their History. You only have to look at the amount of Teams, many smaller by comparison, from very Industrial working class areas that have a fantastic record. In recent History...Look at Blackburn, Wigan and Bolton. Look at a Map of the UK, and you will generally find that Football Clubs in the South West, South Coast and generally 'Nice' areas to live, are far less successfull than their counterparts elsewhere. Take away London Clubs, and there is definately a higher success rate at Clubs from traditional working Class Industrial Towns. Maybe something in it...who knows? Exactly, I remember reading of Georgie Best when he was part of the great Manchester United team of the late 1960s. He must have been the very first English league player to be truely 'cossetted'. He had a luxury pad with huge windows where he could be seen to be living a great lifestyle when life was pretty shit in Manchester for ordinary working people. No one seemed to begrudge him that lifestyle though because he was a true superstar. No shortage of booze and women for Georgie - all part of his legendary training regime. Mr Mosquito
nothin wrong in the mead!!!! Of course there is nothing wrong with Southmead - I was born there. Do people remember the heroics of the mob that pelted Tony Blair's car and its escort vehicles? Those public spirited citizens of Southmead should be awarded campaign medals and battle honours - they did England proud that day.

Of course theres something in it. places like liverpool manchester newcastle northern places , all these sort of areas were run down in years gone by and football was a working class hobby , so people would go in thousands and fill grounds every game, not the odd game . it was a religion then they ate and slept football. look at shanks words football is more important than life and death. the clubs grew with the huge following and in those days it meant something to a player to play for a passionate club like those ,it has never been like that down here the fans are fickle and only support when doing well, man city got 32 thousand in 2nd div as man utd ,can you imagine that here, no theres other things here that mean more than football and thats what rosenior means. But by sheer percentages, there are a lot more football clubs in the North compared to the South West/South Coast. Maybe if the ratio was similar down south we'd be seeing a lot more success. handsofclayOLD
What's wrong with Hartcliffe? I went to senior school there. I was also born in Filwood Broadway before anyone wants to diss that area too. I finished up with a First Class Honours Degree. By the time EdtheMod has finished, EVERY area in Bristol would have been dissed and any footballer coming to Bristol would automatically think they will be living in Beirut and have to be helicoptered into Failand each day for fear of being car-jacked if they took to the hazzardous roads. Suddenly we will be leaving the likes of Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea and Barcelona in our wake. This will be thanks to Edthemod, who by then would have to employ a posse of bodyguards, to keep about 40,000 angry Bristol born City fans at bay. The only time he will be safe is on Saturday afternoons when the 40,000 are filling the new stadium watching us administering another beating to Arsenal, etc.
