Crowd Trouble At The Gate

What happend against Everton in the cup must of been around 95. All I can remember is walking back to car only for a group of scousers to leg it past us followed by a load of police a few minutes later who were being chased by a load of City boys. Then driving past Winterstoke Road and seeing absolute chaos breaking out.

Chelsea fans remember that game as well:

http://forum.talkchelsea.net/topic/384-when-we-were-shit/

Likewise, was there too although I knew we were going to get beaten, Just knew it, Like Oxford at home the year before.Rod the hippy kinda punk from Eastenders who was shagging Mary as I recall, got a good horsing outside. Not that I watched it you understand whistling.gif

 thats the fella ! There were a few mentals on day release that day. Can remember this apoplectic Chels skinhead biting the fence separating the fans, blood all round his mouth. The beautiful game.

Everton, tidy mob. They were on the pitch when Matt Jackson (?) scored in 95 and again when we played them a few years later. I remember speaking to David Unsworth a few years back, and he said he loved the atmosphere in both those games.

Millwall home in 2001 was carnage on Winterstoke Rd, as well as inside the ground. Cardiff at a similar time too

More recently Swansea had a pop at BS3 and got chased I believe

Tottenham at home back in the good ald days.

All our lads on the corner of the East End waiting for their lot to come in.

So many lads it was hard to tell who was who until one big cockney ****er with a Cockerel tattoo on the top of his arm was the give away.

It went mental with our lot getting the better of them. Never realised that they had a load in the East End already and it was going off everywhere. Eventually they had the police march them around the side of the pitch and into the what was open end for away fans.

Birmingham at home on a night game.

That had the whole back of the East End from early on and they would not budge.

You have to say fair play

It's really a case of what didn't happen that day. A mad day, basically it was a riot.

In a nutshell !! I remember the police woman getting hit by flying concrete as if it was yesterday. A lad I went to school with had a scrap book with all the newspaper cuttings of that day , including one of him , from the back page of The Sun , being dragged across the pich by the OB

Funny you mention the paper, as my dad said it was in The Sun the next day. Would be great to see a copy of it! My uncle may be the person you're referring to...!!

Friend of mine is an Everton fan: he was at that game, just in his teens at the time: said it was one of the scariest away days he has had, chased all over after the game.

Chuckle! I remember that bloke off Eastenders getting out of a car on Raleigh Road before the match, then being in the papers for getting arrested afterwards!

Didn't see him at AG, but went to Man City v Chelsea whilst at Uni, sat in the away end, and he was in the escort heading back to Piccadilly after the game.

Remember an early season League Cup match against Cardiff - probably mid 1970's (anybody else that old??). Was an evening match, and afterwards it all kicked off towards Coronation Road. Went to the match with my Dad, and our car was stuck in the traffic, so we just had to sit and watch the carnage unfold around us. Cardiff were throwing dustbins and anything else they could get their hands on through windows, and, according to the WDP next day, a few cars were also overturned. I think that the number of arrests was one of the highest on record at the time, and the Cardiff mob included a relation of John Charles.

Ah Aldershot.

Only one fence so anyone could walk around the ground the long way and get in the other end!

City outnumbered the Para's but they just kept getting up.Again and again.

Someone asked when City lost...Aldershot.

Inadequate Police numbers but didn't matter really as the Paras could handle themselves and at no point attempted to get into the city fans area - which as I said was easy as there was only one dividing fence so all you had to do was walk around the ground....

A Police inspector getting too lippy with the City lot and being held up against said fence and being covered with spit and various fluids much to the amusement of the Sargeant and the other 10 odd plod.

Dogs units on the pitch after 10 minutes while the game was still going...and stayed on till half time.

City's lot basically giving up by half-time as they weren't ever going to win this one.

The growing realisation that half of 3rd Para were waiting outside the ground and that death was actually a realistic option.

Deciding to run like the wind to our coach post match (good choice).

Leaving Aldershot with all limbs still attached and functioning.

Drinking lots of cans which we got from stopping at an offie on the way back to calm the nerves.

Vowing never to return. Even now the Para's are long gone.

That was Aldershot young 'uns.

I got hit by a shoe and a whiskey bottle thrown over that bloody fence...

I was at most of the games mentioned and many more when things went a bit punchy (Remember a copper was very badly injured at Reading and THEY were fined a quarter million quid), however gladly I only ever got a thick ear once and would happily walk away when possible!!

When you get to my age you just want a quiet afternoon at the match ... but as a youngster it was very different. What 'incidents' from yesteryear can you remember? My memory might be doing me a disservice ... but I recall Cardiff and City fans being 'kettled' in the pre-kettle days in is it Frayne Street? Over 100 detained according to the Evening Post. Then there was the time a tin of paint was thrown in the East End and loads of fans got glossed over ... was that Millwall? Then years back was the time you could change ends at half-time ... pre Dolman Stand. Think we were playing Newport County. Both sets of fans met behind the old wooden stand that pre-dated the Dolman and the City boys emerged at the open end with County's Welsh flag on fire. Memories ..

The darts incident last game of season v Fulham (one thrown at Peter Mellor) and i think someone was put away partly because the darts pack/bag had the retailer in Wells name on it.

My old has said about that, he was there when it happened and it all kicked off.

What happened in Reading? As a youngish lad, I like to hear stories of football in the past.

A long time ago now but as far as I remember City fans objected to going a couple of goals down and started throwing things on the pitch.

Such was the quantity of missiles the game was held up, the players retreated and police with dogs were positioned in front of our terrace.

The Reading fans were on the terrace immediately to our left of our end and City fans gradually mounted the high fencing until there was a line of them stood all across the front of the pitch, waving their fists at the police and chanting. Others rattled the fences from below as missiles continued to fly overhead.

Then a couple managed to clamber over, picked themselves up, and ran straight through the line of police, and barking dogs, and, with no fencing at the side, launched themselves into the Reading fans.

Other City fans quickly followed, some being dragged down by police with dogs, but a fair number getting through to the Reading terrace.

Swindon and Plymouth around the same time were at least as bad, Swindon worse from what I can remember.

If that was the game when Matt Jackson (I think) scored for Everton, I was in the Williams and about 5 or 6 Everton fans started cheering a few rows behind me, I remember this creating a very hostile atmosphere in that section on the ground especially as iirc one of the Everton fans got particularly gobby. They we're removed by the stewards pretty sharpish.

Seen various incidents that have already been mentioned like the Millwall match 2001, Pompey early 90's, City fans trying to get to the Gas along that little terrace in front the Dolman in the 2-0 defeat, The infamous game against the Gas in 97, Sheffield Utd, Cardiff 2001 (scenes from which were shown on the BBC documentary 'Hooligans'). I also remember seeing Gasheads being chased around the West st, London Inn area before the Christmas fixture 2000.

One incident I haven't yet seen mentioned was half time against Cardiff in the League cup 1992ish when I believe Cardiff fans forced open the gates behind the Park End that used to seperate the Home and Away sections. I was in the East End and remember seeing both the home and away sections of the Park End almost empty as fans ran around the back to see what was happening/get involved.

Me and my mate went with his cousin (Reading fan and top bloke)And after the game we were going back to his for some scram and then go out for beers in Reading. He lived fairly close to Elm Park, but it was bedlam, City everywhere. We had to walk miles out of our way to get him safely back to his house. We got back eventualy about an hour later to find the local news on with reports of the carnage. His mum was so worried that he'd been "done" that she begged him not to go out that night! Can't remember if he did or not but I know we caught the last train back and there were still police rounding up City lads and escorting them on the train, it was real mad.

Late 70,s. The stabbings in the open end v Wolves (I think one guy died later that day) and big trouble v Ipswich Town (they were read hard cases and were in the City section with no colours). Got kicked by a guy with those wooden souled shoes they were all wearing which nearly broke my leg. We all had our soft Airware Doc Martins on !!; bloody useless. Ah great memories! :innocent06:

Sick but funny.

Youve got me started now. Was anyone else on the coach to Yeovil; Reserve Game/ Friendly. I lived in Somerton but went with a organised Coach load inc Women & Kids, from Street. Trouble all through the game; us giving it large first half v a load of Yeovil kids ("took their end" etc), They went home a half time and got their Dads, Uncles, Big brothers etc and we were suddenly outnumbered 5 to 1 and got a good pasteing. Our group were escorted out of the ground (except me as i was attacked again and decided to hide in amonst the Yeovil fans some of which i knew). Left after the game and was stoned by the city fans who were by the coach chucking stuff at everyone. We eventually set off but the coach was attached at the New Hostpital roundabout where there was plenty of ammunition from the Hostpital building site. Every window down one side was smashed and several people inc kids hurt. It made the front page of the Western Daily Press and was probably the worst trouble i was involved in. I only wanted to go to see if Paul Cheesley had made a recovery from his cruciate!!!

:shocking::dunno: Don't think so melton, I don't remember any violence related fatalities at BCFC games.

Worst I can think of was the City fan attacked on the Open End by a Luton fan with a meat cleaver who was left fighting for his life overnight, but survived, and another City fan stabbed at Cambridge, who was also very seriously injured.

I was at Tottenham in one of our first division seasons, so must have been 77-80, if I remember the game was on Match of the Day in the days when there were only 2 games on MotD, we lost 1-0 with Dave Rodgers scoring an own goal.

Anyway, went in the away end which was busy and I thought not a bad turn out by City. Except it turned out most of them were Spurs and they were picking off City at will. As a young lad of around 15 it didnt look much fun.

Then I spotted a massive, massive geezer stood in the middle of the terracing with a red and white scarf tied round his neck, so I went and stood next to him thinking that was as safe as it would get.

Next thing, a lad came over and starts chatting with the geezer, and says in a cockney accent, "good scarf where did you get it" to which the reply was "battered a Bristol fan for it".

Dont think I've ever been so scared in my life. After the game, what City were left slunk out with no-one saying a word for fear of giving away a west country accent.

Of all the games mentioned on this thread, Reading in '84 was by far the worse, the police didnt know what to do, athough the infamous pincer movement on the pitch against Rovers at AG in 1990(?) gets pretty close. The play offs at Walsall were bad as well thinking about it, remember a load of what even then was old boys being wheeled out for that one, singing Fred Ford and other songs from that era in the pub before the game prior to trashing it and then of course the police van incident on the same day didnt go down too well.

Not really doubting you, BUT Ipswich and Yeovil, I mean IPSWICH, you have got to be the only fan in history to be belted by an Ipswich fan ! :0)
