Clarky89
Wilson came to prove his fitness . . . . got injured. Shame for all parties, but glad it happenednow and we all know it wasn't meant to be. Also good to know Del is actively searching to strengthen. Heaton would be a superb bit of business. The Casual Connoisseur
I'd say that Heaton & Deano are both number 2's, neither are good enough to be number 1 in a team that are looking to do nothing more than survive.
marcofisher
Dont see how getting Heaton in on a free is bad business, Carey would be much better off being loaned out. Also there needs to be competition for the number 1 spot if Deanos place is cemented his performances may well drop, I mean James' performances started to get worse and worse when he was playing week in week out! Ron
Lots of forumers know better than the man who's watched Wilson first hand for the last week. Funny that.
And Its Smith
Tom Heaton is very much in the mould of Steve Phillips, only better. Expect some fantastic saves one minute and a dropped cross the next. On a free transfer and considering the lack of alternatives, this is a good signing. Nibor
I love this place, get asked about teams that at present have a 1st choice and a youth keeper as was requested, provide some details and One poster goes OTT regarding it and the other goes on about last season... It's like there is this continual need to fall into some non existent party line on the matter to show x amount of loyalty It was just relaying some information It was not going on about the future or the past.. "At present" is a pretty silly way to judge this since we're in the middle of the close season. Shock horror, players have been released and not yet replaced. More reasonable would be to look at squads last season after August. We've seen nothing whatsoever to indicate Carey is anywhere near the bench, and the manager clearly wants either a new number one or competition for the keeper he has. We don't even know if he rates Gerken, but we do know he'll only make signings if he thinks they improve the squad.
glynriley
Just having a quick look at current Championship squads in between watching Sussex v Glos in the T20 Hull have 5 keepers in their squad !!, Wolves , Blackburn , Bolton , Shef W , Huddersfield have 4 Us , Boro , Ipswich ,, Forest , Posh , Watford , Charlton have 2 Barnsley , Brum , Blackpool , Brighton , Brnley , Cardiff , Palace , Derby , Leeds , leicester , Millwall all have 3 Currently only 7 teams in the division have 2 keepers so it would seem most managers want more than 2. Its also worth noting that of the other teams with 2 , they all have keepers in a development squad. As far as I know we only have 2 keepers full stop. BTW , Glos got battered in the field , Sussex got 230 !! Going to have to bat like demons.

hortonred
Well I am going to say it.I was under-whelmed by this announcement. Fair enough it is only Tuesday but after waiting for weeks for Del to show any sort of hand in the transfer market since signing Cunningham. We have Wilson released , fair enough he's injured and apparently came to prove his fitness. But Heaton has been with us 10 days and we are still in discussion. I think we will have to move a lot quicker and be a whole lot sharper if we are going to get the desired targets. Although I am beginning to fear that we have no target's left on his list and are looking for straws to clutch.
marcofisher
Heaton is not gonna want to open talks with us in Marbella when his agent and representatives are not there is he? I wish people on here would stop crying that were not going to get more signings what don't people understand about the fact: MOST TRANSFERS HAPPEN TOWARDS THE END OF THE WINDOW
Bristol_South_End
I think the idea of a trial is you wait to see the player train before deciding to sign or not. As opposed to entering contract negotiations before the training has even begun. But good shout on that one...

As I said, he is like a better version of Phillips. Great shot stopper but poor with crosses. Can look nervous at times. On the whole, good (but not great) signing for free if we get him. GGBluebird
Tom Heaton is a class keeper and will be your number 1, We wanted to keep him at Cardiff but he wanted 1st team football. He wouldnt be joining you if he thinks he is going to be number 2. Hes very good at shot stopping, kicking and organisation. I think his weakness is he tends to punch a lot at crosses. His attitude is also good and he is a fans favourite. A lot of Cardiff fans rate him better than our number 1 David Marshall, Cardiff have signed Joe Lewis to fight it out with Marshall now only because Heaton would not sign a new contract. Any penalties then you wont have to worry about. Take a look at his save from Steven Gerrards penalty in the final last season. I wish Heaton all the best and hope he does a great job for you. Dont forget Man Utd was hoping he would stay with them but again he wanted 1st team football

Bar BS3
Name a championship club that has a youth keeper as their number 2? Is money really so tight for clubs in the Championship that clubs are having to resort to playing their youth keepers at right back...?!

Coming on here and giving an educated appraisal of a player that you have actually seen play many times. Why don't you just bugger off back to your own forum and let those on here carry on spouting their own made up versions of events, bring into question his character and doubt his abilities before he has even kicked a ball for us! (assuming he signs of course. Otherwise it will just be another one that got away once he is plying his trade for someone else!) Goodbye Sir!! SecretSam
Sorry - who's this Wilson fella? May be lagging behind here Agree with both sides of the GK debate - would like to see Carey given a chance, but agree we can't afford to take chances with such a key and specialist position. If Carey goes on loan and someone else picks up most/all his wages, AND he actually plays, then excellent - but then when he comes back, he needs to be given a chance, if we are to avoid another Hendo situation

Unless Del gives Heaton assurances that he will get a fair crack at being no. 1 next season then Heaton will go elsewhere, and he does have other options. This is far from a done deal as some seem to think...I hope we sign him though.
City Chuds
Im really quite suprised by all this talk of Heaton (mind you saying that this is OTIB so I shouldnt be). You lot are like my wife she likes the 6 bed house down the road but we still cant afford it! You get the best you can for the money and league you are in I would have accepted Heaton coming to us with an exchange of money involved but for free I think its a cracking deal. Hate em or not Cardiff are more attractive to a player but he left to play first team football, Watford as good as signed him before the takeover and the deal collapsed. Loads of potential and if he hadnt had the wobbles he has had would probably be in the prem. After all the comments on this forum about a Bristol hating little t*sser who left in January 'for the money' id have thought you would have loved to see a decent player signed who really really just wants to play football.
