Andy082005
Look forward. Where would you like us to be in 5-10 years time? Signing a 28 year old that pobably has passed his best before date to market value is hardly good business. You know nothing about football. You talk about re-sale valuations?? Why? Why do we need to become a selling club? And when has a selling club ever really kicked on to bigger and better things? Football evolution is simple. You buy players that can take you forward, the higher you go, the better quality of player you can attract. The higher you go, the more money you make! I don't get why some people seem to believe that if we raid smaller clubs and their youngsters, we will suddenly become amazing. Players like Wilson....28, in his peak! Makes me laugh how you class him as to old. I don't want to see us sign loads of kids with no guidance....I want us to sign real quality, which will take us forward NOW. As someone else said....forget the Akinde route. Let's add some real proven quality if it's available
bearded_red
We don't need OAP's. We need people who can develop. Not 28 year olds. MOM against a low League 2 side.. Must you always chat so much b*******? Hard to be certain about Wilson bearing in mind that pitiful opposition we came up against today, but he looked class. Solid defensively and comfortable going forward with the ball. Certainly an improvement on Foster from what he showed today and both he and Foster's versatility could be crucial during the season should we sign him. Black Rat Lover_89
Exactly. No potential to develop they hinder us to sign players for the future. But hey ho we are happy to play the likes of Rovers. My bad ass. Total tit, hes better then what we got by a long shot and hes free.......FREE!!!!! good player sign him up del'boy!!!!!!! ctid!!! Garland-sweden
This preaseason looks better then the last 2os. Ok, we beat Rovers 3-0. Wilson was playing good as I understand. It was his 1 game I think, he can not do more than play as good as he can, even its vs MU ore Rovers. Wilson is 28 not old for a fotballer, im sure DM knows what he is doing. Nearly 9000 at the gate I read, nice for Carey, 625 games for City, very strong. Its not common these days a player be so loyal to his Club. My hat off for mr Carey, respect. 'Orns
Wow, nice to see we're all friends again! To be fair to Tommy he has a bug up his arse about signing players of a certain age, which to a degree I understand, but if Wilson is better then what we have then it's a no brainer on a free Anyway, City 3 R*vers 0, not a bad day chaps.... Pickle Rick
If we do get Mark Wilson though, think Joe Edwards will have to be loaned out! Edwards will be played in the centre of midfield (when/if selected) if he signs Wilson.

Brizzle Jordan
I see we are signing full backs and wingers again, something that other managers have been ripped to shreads about McInnes has come out and basically said he isnt a priority, however given that we are still looking at him, I'd suggest we are keen and will sign him. (so only Foster, Carey, Wilson, Skuse, Edwards and then probably Wilson who can play at RB) Who said we have a balanced squad? Wilson and Foster are proper RB's, Carey is a CB, Skuse will play every week in CM, Edwards is inexperienced and James Wilson can never be a RB. It's not like he isn't after a CB and a ST.. he is and possibly a CM to go with that.

Disagree with James Wilson never playing right back, in one of his interviews he said he can be deployed if they are playing a flat back line which is true. Mark Wilson and Foster arent particularly tall players, James Could be deployed a right back to provide height against certain teams too!

(so only Foster, Carey, Wilson, Skuse, Edwards and then probably Wilson who can play at RB) Who said we have a balanced squad? Skuse is a central midfielder, Edwards is a development squad full back who plays either side, Carey and Wilson primarily centre halves. Foster is the only primary senior right back although even he is more of a utility player. If we can improve on him significantly that'll be nice. But as the manager says quite clearly it's not a priority position so presumably we will only sign him if the deal is right considering the budget for the other priority positions. What did you think of our signings today? I couldn't fault one of them based on what I saw on the pitch personally. Obviously it's only one game against dire opponents but I've not been positive about every signing we've made before.

marcofisher
Gotta be a good defender first though. James Wilson was actually pretty solid in most games last season, the main exception being the Leeds home match when he was inexcusably poor and sent off after 40 mins, he'll have stepped up to the mark this season I feel! ciderbeans
Let's be honest, no one thought we were going to sign anderson and his position wasn't mentioned within the list of targets so clearly we have a bigger budget than some may think. Signing wilson on a deal really wouldn't cause us problems financially and if he is better than what we have, he could help us earn more money in the long run through a good cup run. In the mean time, we could save edwards wages by loaning him out. Definately must sign him I say

Admin Ian M Posted August 4, 2012 Admin Report Share Posted August 4, 2012 I believe McInnes has been told a budget he can work to & if there's anything spare leftover once the priority positions have been filled he will attempt to strike a deal with Wilson. It's also fairly clear that Wilson wouldn't be here if not for his personal relationship with Derek. I can't remember the last time we had a player who on paper is better than our position simply because he wants to work with our manager.
Admin Ian M Posted August 4, 2012 Admin Report Share Posted August 4, 2012 Point is we have a number who can and have played at this level at right back, and can continue to do so as well as a few with potential. For all the stick that other managers have got for over loading positions, It seems that people are now okay with unbalancing the squad after seasons of screaming that we have an unbalanced squad and needs balancing. No doubt as said we will probably sign him, but the change in mind set, with people being okay with us signing or potentially signing players in positions where we have tonnes of cover is baffling to say the least. If we were to work to the 2 specialist players for each position model, signing Wilson would give us 4 full backs including Edwards as a development player. I don't want to see players who can do a job such as Carey or Slide playing full back as we're instantly weaker. Our main concern should be trying to find someone to take on players in areas of the team where we are high on numbers but low on quality such as Lewin & Damion at centre back. marcofisher
On those grounds then shouldnt we also be worrying about signing another specialist LB. or are you happy with Cunningham, Edwards, Foster, Fontaine and Nyatanga being able to play there? Actually think Joe Bryan is being prepared as a back up left back from what has been in pre season
Garland-sweden
Ok Woodsy, Im not arguing with you, thanks now I understand. For sure the win and the club is more important. We are all City fans in here, we have different wievs of things, thank god. Imagine if every fan had the same opinion, it should be very boring. Anyway nice to see Wolly scored again, the few games I have seen he played, he got the potential to be a good player this season. Hope Im right and that we can do a mutch better season this one. My vibes are good, DM and the club Imo are in the right direction. No panic signs and no money for nothting as Dire Straits sung. Looking forward, COYR. sglosbcfc
If you have the chance to sign a quality player who will enhance the team and you can afford it, then sign him end of. What I have seen of Wilson for Dundee united, Celtic and now City he is definitely a good signing. Also I do not think that twenty eight is old for a defender, two or three peak seasons left in him. BCAGFC
Mark Wilson = Class Admittingly he wasn;t tested today, would like to see more of him as he looks far better than the options we have at RB/RWB at the moment. BCAGFC
Kibs
I think those worrying about budget really have no need to. I've said it before but McInnes has been very careful so far and taken his time to get what he wants. If signing Wilson was going to impact on higher priority positions then I'm sure he wouldnt sign him. He stated today that Wilson is also fairly versatile, he appears keen to play for us (he has other options but is choosing to train with us) and is a very tidy player. Win Win situation surely? marcofisher
I don't understand this all this desperation to sign him though, from what I saw when Foster came on he did just as good a job and looked even more dangerous coming forward! Might be a useful addition but not that much more of one
