Think You Know The Rules Of Football?

I swear a few years ago Bridges got punched in the box off the ball and their fella was sent off, but we didn't get a penalty. We must have been robbed!

Not so - a penalty can only be given if the ball is in play. If memory serves, the Bridges incident (v Colchester?) happened when we were waiting to take a corner or free kick - as the ball wasn't in play when the offence was committed, a sending off (but no penalty) was the right decision.

Yes, indeed - in that instance the correct restart is to continue with the corner/free kick.

A simple rule to remember - the game can only be restarted in the correct manner for which the ball went out of play in the first place.

So, if the refereee blows for a foul on Team A, and while they are preparing for the free kick, a member of Team A punches a player on Team B. The Team A player would rightly be sent off, but the game would STILL be restarted with a free kick for Team A.

Any manner of goings on while the ball is dead is irrelevent in terms of how play is restarted.
