glynriley
Will never foget it. That moment when Slatter tried to let Coopers ball forward run out , Riley robbed him and laid it back to Hirst. Magical. That was the beginning of the route back towards the top. I was only 14 at the time but it will live with me forever. I dont think I've seen my Dad and my Uncle as happy / pissed since !
Cowshed
The walk from Bedminster to the Gin Palace ... Then City's biggest show on the street. The adrenalin rush as the second went in barely matched since. An away end full of sound, smells, smoke, dust, bodies and at times total pandemonium. Modern football will never match that intense eurphoria.
Esmond Million's Bung
totally great game. my mate had his back to the game chatting to me as we scored the second. Can still see him getting sucked down into the vortex of the crowd. And the toilets at the Muller Road end ... basically a portacabin in a swamp of piss. Agree the defining moment in our recent history. and nice to see that facilities wise that the gas have gone up in the world of the tented village. ralphindevon
Up there with the best memories. For those young'uns thinking, so what, we've beat them plenty of times since, this was huge, it was about a year and a half after we went bust, we had got relegated to the bottom division, Gas were a division above, and we'd been bottom of the bottom division. A recent thread on here asked "when will our next big away game be?" well this was a time when those of us who hadn't abandoned the club, would turn up most weeks wondering if we would ever see 10,000 at the gate again, a time when Torquay away in front of 4000 was a huge highlight of the season. Rovers had been loving our 3 consecutive relegations and many had not acted very nicely to our going bust the year before. So to turn up at Eastville that day, especially for me, as I had only started going to away games on regular basis when I passed my test about a year before, was about as thrilling as life could possibly get, I remember parking somewhere in St Werburgh's and me and my mates getting a tough time from gasheads as we walked to the ground. The feeling of going one down and then coming back to win 2-1 gave me a feeling I hadn't had before watching City, we got frog marched back to Temple Meads, which then meant a dodgy walk back to the car for us, we didn't mind, we were on cloud nine. It was in the days when the 3rd round draw was live at about 5 o'clock and as we were being marched back to TM, we crowded around someone with a wireless and, I think my memory is correct, we Notts County away, they were in the top flight and that was another cracking day out, holding them to a 2-2 draw. KilgoreRed
You can tell I don't post often. Yeh, I won't forget that game in a hurry. As someone already mentioned quite a few of us were in the north stand enclosure. Being from Filton meant keeping a low profile as I knew quite a few of the 'lads' in there. Managed to keep a lid on it for the first but when the 2nd went in our little group just let go. Knowing we had outstayed our welcome required jumping the fence onto the dog track and a police escort around to the open end to a chorus of 'Come and join us over 'ere.' Will live long in the memory

Will live long in the memory I too was in the home end on that beautiful and glorious day, the south enclosure to be precise and all on my jack. Came very close to getting on the receiving end of a kicking from some of the surly donkey-jacketed ones after Hirst's winner. Saved by the old bill, bless em. GrahamC
Total quality day, with a team of free transfers, kids and a part time student (!) we rose again, by the way it's a shame no-one ever mentions Tom Ritchie's goal which levelled the score, a superb goal by a true City great. I also remember a couple of splendid "physical challenges" by the combative Forbes Phillipson-Masters on Archie Stephens and (especially) Paul Randall... The most dangerous part of the day was safely negotiating their excuse for a car park behind the Muller Rd end after the game had finished though, not the "crew" of the always pitiful blue few.. Nogbad the Bad
Never felt so nervous before a game - I remember pacing around all morning feeling physically sick until it was time to set off, the result of that game meant so much. There have already been descriptions of the incredible celebratory melee after City's 2nd - all I can picture is a mass of bodies with arms and legs thrashing about, scarves, hats and glasses flying all over the place and people eventually emerging battered but delirious to sing the 'We knocked Rovers out the Cup' song. One of the truly great days to be a City fan.

An away end full of sound, smells, smoke, dust, bodies and at times total pandemonium. Modern football will never match that intense eurphoria. Sums that afternoon up. I have watched the highlights many times, but it never really shows what it was like under the flyover! Pandemonium a great word for it... Martyn Hirst a true City hero that day and for a long time to come! A Happy Happy Day after the club so nearly bit the dust in the previous 12 months....It was so packed in that end you could barely get ya fags out! Aizoon
A great moment. We'd come through the trauma of 1982, and this convinced us that, however bad things were, we were still better than the Gas

Monkeh
I've just been having a read of the gas forum and had a chuckle, its really that bad at the moment for the blue few, Just remember how bad we are this season and its just a drop in the ocean compared to the gas,
westonred
I was on the terracing and after signing a few rude songs i heard "Right then Sonny your Knicked" and this Copper put his hand on my shoulder luckily when i looked up it was my best mates dad who was on duty in the away end he just winked at me and said "Had you that time Rog, enjoy the game" and walked off ... Me: I saw his last big gig, at the Isle of Wight. Him: I just missed it. Me: How do you mean? Him: It's a shame, I was born two days after And he meant it... What a legend As for Tom Richie...a giant among menIf my memory serves correct, I think Martin Hirst was a student at Bristol Uni and used to train between lectures. I think he was clever enough to get a proper job before long, remember City would of paid bugger all in them days. A lot were just getting YTS money. Blimey, that brings back memories - City lads on YTS money, £25 per week? I remember one lad about my age then - 18? - that used to attend the Star Judo club South Bristol telling me he was on a YTS at City circa August 1983 if my memory serves me right. pikeysrobins
I remember this day as if it were yesterday. When Martyn Hirst scored that goal I think I travelled 100 feet in the crush of City fans celebrating! It was packed and reminds me of the good old days of standing! The atmosphere was electric despite being miles from the pitch because of the speedway track! I think I was closer to being run over on the flyover than the ball! Eastville was a shithole but I did venture there quite often to watch the speedway in the Phil Crump days! Aaaah! Memories!
