about glyn riley who played for us circa 1982-87

Glyn always taped and kept his goals he scored for Bristol City

Unfortunatley his wife taped over HIS goal tape to record coronation street!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After making a plea to HTV 's Jed pitman

Jed ran through all the tapes of the Glyns goals and put a new tape together

Can any one remember the approximate date

Thanks in advance

For you young guns who are reading this the DVD PLAYER did not arrive till circa 1996

That was when the euros were held in England for the first time

the DVD recorder arrive in the arly 2000's

Riley used to like wearing number 6 shirt (kids: back in them days, there were no squad numbers, so the players on the pitch wore 1-11, and the sub (singular) number 12).

Anyway, anyone know why he chose such an unusual number for a striker? And does he still have big hair?

I strongly object to the title of this thread.

I watched Glyn Riley during the 80’s (and Atyeo in the 60s) but I don’t classify myself as “older”. This term only applies to someone at least 25 older than you. In my case that’s someone who is approx 90.

1982-83 Glynn Riley was signed from Barnsley on a free transfer and was top scorer that season with 16 goals.

1986-87 Glynn scored our equaliser at Wembley (Freight Rover Trophy Final) that led to those penalties v Mansfield.

Although I have no idea why he wore No.6 ( lucky number i suppose) this does remind of the days when you could a players position by their number.

1 Goal Keeper

2 Right Back

3 Left Back

5/6 Centre Backs

4/8 Centre Midfield

7 Right Wing

9/10 Strikers

11 Left Wing

12 Sub.

Though I'm sure someone will correct me, but you get the jist.

Hat trick v Wimbledon was highlight for me.

A highlight for me?

Remember him jumping up on the East End railings after scoring one of his goals.

Always got the supporters going.

Wouldn't mind him and Steve Neville up front together now. Their work rate would put our current squad to shame

Top Scorer in 83-84 as well , 18 goals

Second in 84-85 with 21 , 1 behind Alan Walsh

Scored twice in the Freight Rover Final v Bolton in 85-86

Top player IMO , but I might be a bit biased !

Bit touchy in your old age? ;)

It goes back further than that!

1- Keeper

2- Right Back

3 - Left Back

4 - Right Half

5 - Centre Half

6 - Left Half

7 - Outside Right (or Right Wing)

8 - Inside Right

9 - Centre Forward

10 - Inside Left

11 - Outside Left (or Left Wing)

...and they used to line up like this...

1

2 3 (full backs)

4 5 6 (half backs or midfield)

7 8 9 10 11 (forwards)

Those were the days - 5 forwards!! - though the inside forwards operated mainly in midfield, and the centre half was the main central defender.

Remember that Glos Cup match at Eastville? 0-0 at HT, but the full time score was Rovers 0 - City 5 with all 5 forwards scoring.

That doesn't need correcting, that is right for a 4-4-2 formation. For a 4-3-3 it was as follows -

1

2. 5. 6. 3

4. 10. 8

7. 9. 11
