kiwicolin
At least they are playing him Fulham fans finally got a second look at striker Matt Smith after he came off the bench against Watford. Smith signed from Leeds United on transfer deadline day in September, but had a disastrous start, sent off on his debut for the club. He did not earn another chance and was loaned out to League One side Bristol City. This was an opportunity he seized, not only starring against Premier League side West Ham in the FA Cup in January, but scoring a total of 13 goals for the Robins. His loan spell ended at the close of February, and he was named on the bench for Fulham in theirChampionship clash with Watford on Tuesday night. Fulham lost the game 1-0, but Smith's 15 minute cameo caught the eye. He won six aerial duels, creating one chance and having one effort at goal. It was a small snapshot of his qualities, but illustrated the different option he poses and can add to Kit Symons' side. The manager may need him, with the club currently sitting in 20th place, while his return in time to play former club Leeds at Craven Cottage on March 18th is a date for the striker's diary. Here is a look at how fans reacted on Twitter to his performance..

Red-Robbo
Met my Fulham fan mate today and he's thrilled at the prospect of having a big, physical striker to add to the club's attacking options. Looks like Smithy won't just be making the tea there, as some suggested.
mattjtsmith
Looks like he got a sub appearance tonight, only 15 minutes but its good for him that's he's obviously in the frame. Good for you Matty!

chipdawg
I can't decide what permutation in Fulham's season would help us get him back next season. If they go down and we go up, he's likely to want a chance to go back to the Championship, but Fulham are likely to look at his record for us in league 1 and insist on keeping him. If they stay up they might not want to sell to a rival team who know how to get the best out of him
B1ackbird
Might see him tomorrow if he plays for Fulham on Sky...
Tall King Blox
From their forum He could've been given man of the match. The guy is not human, he won EVERY header and eventually was being marked by 4/5 players. Yet he still somehow won every header and the scary part was he doesn't even jump. We created triple the chances in 15 minutes than we did in the other 75 and it was all down to smith. If we are going to slate someone it is hugo. It is him that cost us, he is crap and offers absolutely nothing. I'm optimistic but also fuming that smith hasn't been an option all this time. Kit needs to own up to that cock up and at least have him on the bench now to come on in every game. Whatever the scenario he is the perfect sub. Hugo is now 5th choice for me Ross, Woodrow, smith, dembele..........Hugo He should be embarrassed that all these so called inferior/inexperienced players are making him look like a joke. Proud of today other than whatever hugo was trying to do 5 pages here...http://www.friendsoffulham.com/forum/index.php?topic=46279.

Guest
Their fans are saying what a lot of ours were saying when we got him on loan - and Wilbraham provoked a similar response. Big bloke = long ball game. So many fans have been blinded by the endeavour to pass the ball 20 times before making any real use of the ball that they totally misconstrue the difference between long ball and long passing. Long ball, kick it far towards their goal as quick as possible is a very boring 'art'. But, a long pass is a remarkably different thing and executed right is a thing of beauty. Even pundits wind me up. When you have a fashionable player, like Gerrard (or frankly anyone from Liverpool) attempting a 40 yard pass, particularly when he does 10-15 times a game, he has wonderful vision and technique [putting aside he overhits at least 9/10]. Any other team which is not a media darling doing the exact same thing plays a long ball game.
WolfOfWestStreet
When smith was in the team we played a direct style that was effective but certainly not boring. He scored a whole range of goals, headers, close range scrambles, low shots, 35 yard half Volleys and even a back heel!! What do Fulham fans want? they are at the ass end of the championship and obviously don't have the squad to start playing it around. When we swap divisions would gladly take this "lump" of their hands because if they do get relegated he is exactly the player they will need.
