Could it come down to wickets taken?

Somerset 236 v Middlesex 121-8

If teams finish level on points, most wins determines placing, then fewest defeats, then most points from head-to-head results, then most wickets taken, then most runs scored.

I'm looking into the future here...

If Middlesex are out for less than 200 and lose to Somerset, they will finish on 146 points.

Somerset would have 147 and survive.

If Hampshire lose at Warwickshire, but take exactly six points from the match, they will also finish on 146 points.

But Lancashire and Hampshire will have won, drawn and lost exactly the same number of matches this season.

What about their head-to-head results? Oh dear, both matches were drawn! Get counting the wickets taken this season folks!

Typo!

He means Middlesex, and, in any event, their results are of no concern to Somerset.

The equation is quite simple: getting Middlesex out for 249 or less and winning results in Somerset staying up. Anything less means Somerset are relegated.

Mr. Strauss has yet to adjudicate on the 'dodgy' pitch, although he may intervene should Middlesex lose and be relegated.

Middlesex could declare at 200-8 and it’s game over.  We HAVE to get that 9th wicket pronto after lunch. We also have to remember that we’ve got to win the game too.

Looking at forecast might only get half a day tomorrow but Thurs looks good.

Unless they can convince the umpires that their need for such a declaration is to take advantage of the (spinning) wicket, weather conditions or similar, they are not allowed to declare in such circumstances and would be deducted points (Mr. Strauss notwithstanding) should they attempt to do so.

Somerset declared in a similar situation some years ago in a one-day game against Worcestershire (Brian Rose, Viv and Botham) and, correctly in my view, were both penalised and vilified.

Anyway, don't worry: all out within 30 minute after lunch today.

The real burning question concerns Somerset's second innings batting and when, or whether, they declare given tomorrow's weather forecast.

If we can set mIddlesex anything around 250 I think we've got this.

Saw a few odd balls but none of the dismissals today seemed to be due to the wicket more so poor shots. Stirling and Malian proved you can bat on it.

Our top 5/6 showed you could bat on it too, just headless from the rest. Eddie's knock is looking invaluable now though!

Thanks Tom. Can't say that I'm not worried given that a verdict in our favour could doom Middlesex but it sounds quite hopeful.

The shouts about the pitch were the same at the end of last season but each time it was deemed to be ok

Let's just worry about what we can control and what will be will be
