Different Outlook

With all the negativity being posted on here I just thought I would point out a different way of looking at things.

Not one of our main starting 11 has been sold to another club. Which after the season some of them had - And I'm guessing there probably has been some offers for them.

Glass half full still for me - signings will come eventually and add to the great starting 11 we already have!

Love the spin, I prefer to think of it as last seasons squad, less a few departees, plus a French striker unproven in the English game. I'm worried, we have now moved up a level.

Granted we have moved up a level but until a few games we won't know if our current first 11 can handle the step up but based on how well they did last year they are worthy of the chance to test theirselves

People were losing their beans over us not buying in January (the spectre of the playoff final year was raised a few times) but the only oncoming a we had then were loans, and the team did well.

I'm cautiously optimistic over transfers still happening, and for players who will genuinely add quality, and I believe in the young and hungry team we already have.

Hungry. There it is again. Yeh!

You're completely right but when this is pointed out (plus the fact that 5 of our 7 subs last season have either left or retired and we have only brought in one player), then we're told we're being melodramatic.

Yup; think this team is pretty hungry to get a crack at Chapuonship sides - don't think that is a bad thing.

Seen us load up with plenty of players who clearly weren't all that keen at putting their back into it when we were at this level before, so think that is a good element to have in place.

Give me a very slim squad with quality, commitment and the drive to succeed (or hunger, if you like) over a large one that might have some of the first aspect, but less of the latter two. I'd take that everytime.

I don't think there has been anything negative....just slight concern at the situation we are in.

It's great we have kept pretty much everyone that played regularly in the first team last season.

However....As I mentioned in another post....SC implied in his interview that if transfer targets don't drop soon, then we would most likely do business towards the last couple days of August and the following weeks when the loan market opens.

So that could possibly leave us playing 5 league games in August with the following....

Fielding ( slight niggle )

Ayling

Flint

Williams ( slight calf strain )

Little ( no where near fit, could take another couple months )

Pack

Smith

Bryan

Freeman

Wilbs

Codger

Reid

Burns

Agard ( out injured another couple months )

Waggy ( Hamstring )

Then you have a selection of Development players to choose from and El Abd who Cotts wants rid of.

So we have a team carrying injuries and no bench that could compete well in the Championship.

When you look at it like that, it's understandable why people are concerned.

Can't see Little or Waggy being fit for first game....so in theory we don't even have a starting eleven.

One of the best elements we have is team spirit - every player doesn't just want to do well for themselves, not one of them wants to let his team mates down - it's refreshing to see a team all willing to put a shift in and not just happy to collect their pay cheque at the end of the week regardless of their performance!

Little nowhere near fit!? Correct me if I'm wrong did he not complete 90 mins on Thursday? Albeit he may not be 100% but he's not that far away.

He did play 90 mins....but everyone I spoke to who was at the game, said he was far from fit. Even Little in his interview said he was far from fit.

He played in an awkward manner, without full movement and was obviously protecting his shoulder.

No way is he going to be able to play Championship football to the ability needed.

This league is a massive step up....to compete....we need our team from last season playing to the best of their ability all the time....plus new recruits of similar or better quality.....that's just to compete.

As it stands....and because of injuries and lack of quality 'back up'....we don't stand a chance.

We only need a few more injuries and we are truly stuffed.

I really can't understand how some people can't see that.

We could be very lucky and get no injuries...and the main team could do well and get results.

But why rely on luck and hope?...words that SC used a lot in his interview.

And people there said he was holding his arm awkwardly and understandably not going in for challenges.

He said in Portugal the specialist said he'd miss the start of the season.

Does that sound like he's fit?

I think Waggy has a better chance of being so.

Still a week away from the start of the season - my post was meant to be a way of trying to turn this forum from one of gloom into something a little more positive - of course we would of all liked more signings but would you rather the club brought in players just to make the numbers up - or cripple us finically - or upset the dressing room. We're back in the championship off the back of one our greatest seasons and anyone would think we were still in league one looking at another season of scrappy football and crap grounds.

I have no idea about the FFP rules, but presumably signing people later would allow their effective weekly salary to be higher for the same hit against the "cap" so to speak.

Signing someone at the end of August, rather than the start of July would effectively allow a wage offer of 1/6th more (for one season)? Which might be enough to convince some to sign?

Appreciate this causes more issues down the line, that extra 1/6th could hurt in seasons 2 and 3 of a multi year contract!

Cynic - you may be right about Little, but those of us at YTFC who know a little about the game recognise a player who's holding himself back.

Take for example a ball pinged cross field to our wing backs. On Thursday, JB leapt like his usual salmon like self, ML held back.

To give a bit if balance (pardon the pun for the rest of this sentence), ML did fall over a couple of times under non heading challenges and his shoulder was fine.

His holding back may have been instruction from SC, his own psychological effects of his injury, or he's not quite ready.

None of us actually know, but at least grant a little respect to what several of us saw.

Nothing would be greater than to see ML start next Saturday and play like he did just season up until the point he started carrying his injury, before it actually went for good.

Not sure it's negativity, just pointing out the obvious. The starting XI looks ok, although it will be tested a lot more in the Championship. But beyond that is threadbare at present, and amy further signings will not have much time to settle. Also the risk of panic signings. Must admit, I expected a couple of experienced players on a free, plus 4/5 good young lower league players. The way forward if a smaller club like City is to be successful in the Championship, without draining SL's wallet!

I would imagine we will only have two different starting players against Sheff Wed that started most the games last season. Kodjia and someone in place of Mark Little. I think for the first 3-4 games we will be fine, but the lack of depth may start to kick in then.

I agree were ok ish providing nothing happens injury / suspension wise, 3/4 games - transfer window closes and international break begins. Giving us over a week to get any new signing up to speed with the current team. Fingers crossed we can pull a few results in. Unbeaten would be nice 2d 2w if we lose the first 2 I would imagine transfers may move faster
