The 1909 FA cup final shirt

Thanks Spudski, It is a really interesting read, i will probably have to read it a couple of times for it to sink into my head. I love the bit about the goalie sitting on the crossbar, i see that before, the goalie standing on the goal line shaking his knees. Also your second link was good the Sheffield rules, the goalie could handle the ball in his own half but wasn't allowed to pick it up so ended up bouncing the ball. I also think it said the players could handle the ball but not pick it up. Cheers

We played in blue for the final didn't we?

Yep and we also played in blue away at Northampton I seem to remember, when Scott McGarvey was up front. I might be wrong but I think we wore their away kit due to a perceived colour clash? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I always liked how Man U were always happy to have a blue away kit, even if it did wind up Man C fans. They even had a sort of almost sky blue one once, brilliant!

We shouldn't be nervous about embracing our history - and the colour blue is prominent in that as we wore it in our biggest ever game.

It would so annoy the sags if we relaunched the cup final kit in 2019 to celebrate the 110th anniversary of that pinnacle....

When you actually think about the significance of that final it really hits home how much of a generational sport football is. There most certainly isn't anyone alive who went to that final, and probably only a select few who had relatives who did. Yet both of the teams that participated in that final are football league clubs to this day. Despite the mammoth differential in size between them, it's somewhat humbling to think of the fans at this final as some of the earliest fans of our club. They in effect began the journey that we all now find ourselves on. If only time travel existed!

I love this picture of the Everton fans going by coach. I wonder if city fans went up on coaches like these, must have taken them days to get there.

Can anyone explain the pitch markings in this photograph? I haven't seen it before. http://londonist.com/2015/05/when-fa-cup-finals-were-a-picnic-in-crystal-palace-park

Prior to this the crossbar was just a tape! The markings were like this for a while until replaced by the current 6 and 18 yard boxes.  The "D" or penalty arc didn't appear until the 1920s

Sorry Hav, I should have clarified that this was the case ONLY in every team I was involved with!  Please also note the 'standard' Cotswold haircut of the time!

Inside him = A wannabe Roger Daltry

Inside him = Fat Bloke?

Tall Geezer = Pat Jennings Jnr

I have to stop now... these images are freakin' me out; the faces nearly all look familiar. Weird.

Yes they did...I'm sure I've seen pics of them leaving the West Country by Horse and carriage/cart....but for the life of me can't seem to find them.

I thought I'd look up the kingsway tramway station, thought that spudski might like to read it. You may notice in one of the pictures there is a John Cleese impersonator or it could be himself. he is doing a very odd walk, it looks like he has 1 leg but if you look at the shadow he has got 2.

If you'd have kept going along the back row, you'd have got to Cole Skuse's Uncle Tekkie.

It may be 40 years ago, and I left Charfield about 38 years back, but I could still name every one of those handsome, well coiffured young gentlemen.  So, if anyone recognises themselves, please send twenty quid to me via the usual delivery method so that I can have a senior moment and forget your name and you're never associated with THAT haircut!!

Okay it is not our unlucky shirt. It is one worn by man utd on that fateful day, I noticed it was up for sell tonight. I wondered if any of you could give me your loose change so I could buy it...

Have a look through the categories and you might find something you can afford. I suppose with things like this only overpaid players can afford to buy.

You can see replicas of the Manchester United and City shirts in action here: http://www.1909replayed.org/home.html from the Centenary Celebration Match on Friday 24th April 2009 which was attended by the daughter of City player Archie Annan and the grandchildren of manager, Harry Thickitt.

Just done a quick google search on Harry Thickitt. I thought it was an interesting read, he played for us and was manager. His last game in charge was held up with the appearance of an aeroplane which i thought was quite funny. When he retired from football I think he ran a pub in Trowbridge and he died in 1920 only aged 47. Back then seeing an aeroplane in the sky must have been fascinating for everyone!
