....calm down and grow up?!

He defects from Northern Ireland (having played for their U21s) to play for the Republic, upsetting alot of people.

He refuses to wear a poppy on his football shirt (to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice) in the country where he earns his living, despite the fact that over 49,000 Irish people died in WWI serving in the armed forces. Upsetting alot of people.

And now today he celebrates West Brom's 'momentous' victory over his 'mighty' ex club Sunderland by jumping up and down in front of the Sunderland fans and generally acting like a provocative 'person' for want of another more emotive word. Upsetting alot of people.

The guy needs to just realise that as a pro footballer he is in the spotlight, why can't he just grow up and act responsibly?

Yeah, such a principled bloke..................who chooses to LIVE AND WORK in the Country that murdered his community and stack up the currency with the Queen's mug on it in his bulging bank account. Or does he black her out (and everything she stands for) with a marker pen whilst he's wondering what to do with his wad?

Perhaps, out of principle, he should go and play for some League of Ireland outfit and earn a few Euro's. Or he could always try his luck and feel so much more comfortable in his own mind in Spain/Italy/France etc..............................if he wasn't so bang average technically!!!

Which community does he mean by 'his community...' ?

“If the poppy was simply about World Wars One and Two alone, I would wear it without a problem,” said the Derryman. “It stands for all the conflicts that Britain has been involved in. Because of the history of where I come from in Derry, I cannot wear something that represents that.”

Well within his rights imho.

Fine, he comes from Derry, the second largest city in Northern Ireland, any idea why he defected to play for the Republic after he represented Northern Ireland...?

Players choosing to play for a nation after representing a different one at under 21 level etc happens. What you don't see is somebody referring to it as 'defecting'.

Rather gives away your prejudice against the bloke.

Quite a number of other Northern Irish born players have, as have some with Northern Irish parents or grandparents.

All part of the Republic of Ireland's "interesting" approach to international football which in the past saw them pick one player over 80 times who had absolutely no link to their country at all.

Just in case you think it is unique, Wales' captain Ashley Williams was born and educated in England and so were both his parents, good job (like about 5 others in the Wales squad) he had a Welsh grandparent then...

He defects from Northern Ireland (having played for their U21s) to play for the Republic, upsetting alot of people. Many people still have a problem with N.Ireland.

He refuses to wear a poppy on his football shirt (to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice) in the country where he earns his living, despite the fact that over 49,000 Irish people died in WWI serving in the armed forces. Upsetting alot of people. People who died for the freedom not to wear the poppy, this is a free country where you may do as you please in many respects.

And now today he celebrates West Brom's 'momentous' victory over his 'mighty' ex club Sunderland by jumping up and down in front of the Sunderland fans and generally acting like a provocative 'person' for want of another more emotive word. Upsetting alot of people. And how much abuse do you think the Sunderland fans gave him? Just banter

The guy needs to just realise that as a pro footballer he is in the spotlight, why can't he just grow up and act responsibly?

He can not wear a poppy if he wants.  Free country

he can play for Ireland if you wants and qualifies.

he can take the mick out of Sunderland fans who gave him abuse if he wants.  football fans should grow up. Dish out abuse and start crying when a player has enough balls to give it back.  As far as I know he wasn't offensive so what's the problem?

Player chooses to play for a national team for which he is eligible.
Player chooses to exercise his right to not to wear a poppy and explains why not.
Player chooses to celebrate a win by his team.
Yes, what a ****.

I thought under the terms of the good Friday agreement northern Irish are allowed to choose British passport, Irish passport or dual passport. Meaning that players born in N. Ireland can play for the Republic without having any family links.

Whilst I don't know if McClean has any ties-many players decide to play for the Republic as they felt they had a better chance of playing tournament football... which is one of the reasons I was so glad that N. Ireland qualified for euro 16.

I agree with all of that but it does seem strange that his feelings towards the British/English should run so high that he can still bring himself to play in England for what is  now his third English club.

Without wishing to sound like a brain-dead racist, why doesn't he **** off back to play for Derry City or choose a country that has no links to the British Army to play in. Although he'll struggle to find the latter.

Well you do see "somebody referring to it as 'defecting'.."  - interesting views here:

http://m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/international/defector-james-mcclean-is-hiding-behind-religion-says-keith-gillespie-28757055.html

And I'm not 'prejudice' - just commenting on what he's done and asking why he doesn't calm down and act more responsibly as he's in the public eye.

Well I think the reason he is singled out for abuse is because he HAS offended people and whether they should take offence at his actions is up for debate, but he does seem to bring it upon himself.

For example why did he need to disrespect our National Anthem on WBA's pre season tour: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sportsnews/article-3167564/Republic-Ireland-international-James-McClean-sparks-anger-turning-British-national-anthem-West-Bromwich-Albion-s-pre-season-tour.html

Why can't he just stand still for a couple of minutes and not use his public persona to cause unnecessary angst? It seems the WBA fans even turned on him for that...

Yes, what a ****.

Yes, but his reason for not wearing the poppy on his football shirt was that it would be 'disrespectful to those innocent people who lost their lives during The Troubles..' yet in 2013 he declared his support for a pro-IRA song by the Wolfe Tones on Twitter and had to shut his account down because of the inevitable abuse it attracted.

Isn't posting that tweet 'disrespectful to those innocent people who lost their lives during The Troubles'??

He doesn't do himself any favours, he also ridiculed Northern Ireland on Twitter for not qualifying for the 2012 Euros. The country of his birth. Well that came back to haunt him this time around...

He should just be more self aware I think and not go out of his way to court controversial publicity on seemingly sensitive issues when he is in the public eye and could quite easily keep his views to himself.
