Matthews was hyped up but reputations meant little to Mike Thresher. About 5 minutes in and the ball was delivered to Matthews towards the corner of what is now Dolman/Atyeo. I can still picture Thresher steaming in at full tilt and hit Matthews so hard he almost ended up in the tenth row. He didn't seem to want to play after that. FA Cup Jan 1959. 0-0 draw. We lost the replay 1-0. Stan was 44 years old and ageing a bit. Mike did not show him any respect during the game but I believe the story goes that he sought out Stan after the match to get his autograph. Thresher's family were in the building trade and like most pros at the time Mike worked during the out of season period. I remember going down Winterstoke Rd one day and there was some building work going on at the garage next to what was the old Odeon. Mike was shovelling earth out of a trench. Somebody please flag this up the next time you see a current pro doing anything remotely like this for a living during the close season.

Apologies, I must have got duff info from here: http://liverpoolfc.wikia.com/wiki/Liverpool_F.C._Home_Kit It says blue and white quarters on that site... PHILINFRANCE
7 hours ago, cidered abroad said: So many City all time greats in that picture for me. The obvious ones like Garland, Galley, Gibson, Merrick, Derrick but very high regard for Parr, Bush, Sharpe, Drysdale. On the subject okit, we are red shirts and white shorts. Yes, certainly some greats in that picture. Only a year or so previously, however, the picture would, presumably, have included Tony Ford, Jack Connor and Gordon Low (and, of course, the great John Atyeo). Ken Wimshurst arrived the following season, I presume. I have just noticed - no Brian Clarke either.
