spudski
....A number of Premier League football teams have been named in a report in the Sunday Times which claims widespread doping across British sport. Arsenal and Chelsea are among the teams named in the report, as are Premier League leaders Leicester City and Championship side Birmingham City. The newspaper secretly recorded a doctor - Dr Mark Bonar - claiming to have been involved in doping at least 150 sports stars, including a number of top-flight footballers in a story which has been described as "English football's first major doping scandal". joe jordans teeth
why hasn't the paper named any names, they can tarnish clubs with this nonsense ,it is the Sunday times though so it might as well be the sun
Ashtonwurzel
There is (and has been for years) doping in most sports. It was successfully swept under the carpet until the Lance Armstrong case and athletics managed to keep rampant cheating quiet for decades. There is a good reason a certain top British cyclist/personality only takes part in "novelty" events now. This story will be dismissed as one rogue crackpot doctor craving fame but be rest assured there is a massive issue with drugs in ALL sports including football. We got friendly on holiday a couple of year ago with an Australian athlete called Josh Ross. He has competed at the highest level for his country....and he told us that all the top sprinters (including the Jamaicans) are doping, they just have ways to get round it. And Its Smith
It would be an incredible shock if drugs WASNT rife in football. I don't understand why cortisone injections have always been allowed. They are extremely performance enhancing.

Came to the fore in the Festina Affair. Read Breaking the Chain by Willy Voet, a real insight into the murky world. Further back Merckx suggested that it was impossible to successfully compete in the world's toughest races "without help". Simpson did not simply die from heat exhaustion and heart failure on the Ventoux. Many top cyclists have not reached pension age. Effect of competing in one of the world's toughest sports or use of "helpful" substances/blood doping? It would be naive to believe that where cycling led, other sports have not followed. At the moment though I believe cycling is now leading in trying to be clean, and so eventually other sports will up their checking and blood passport controls. Thankfully I've seen little evidence of our lot being on anything though!!

Frenchay Red
"La Ronde" today of course. So will be interesting to see if there are any unbelievable rides in this year's Tour of Flanders. Officials are looking at the bikes now as much as the riders' biological passport!

22A
A spokesman for the Prem stated "2,300 drug tests were conducted last year. Only 1.5% were positive and there were NEARLY all for recreational drugs". Hmm; 2,300 * 1.5% = 40 players.

Highly likely a player was drug tested more than once.

Guest
Source bbc: The paper claims London-based private doctor Mark Bonar prescribed banned performance-enhancing drugs to over 150 British athletes including footballers. The Sunday Times says it has no independent evidence Bonar, who is not currently licensed by the General Medical Council, treated the footballers or the other sportspeople. I stopped reading papers a long time ago because of the lazy 'journalistic licence' (we've got pages to fill boys and girls, what shite can we publish today) stuff that goes on. If the Sunday Times has been found to have gotten it wrong, page 33, 'Opps sorry'. Drug taking takes place. They get caught by the authorities (real evidence), they get shafted. Journalists don't have the common sense to separate the braggart from the real article.
