Out of Contract Championship Players

Eddie Hitler

Recommended Posts

Posting in the main one as this is has general interest.  Some of these have the equivalent of a whole squad out of contract; I also read that every single Plymouth Argyle player is out of contract.  It all seems an odd way to run a football club.

These are out of contract players rather than the released list.

For City I know Derek Williams has another year but as that's not been formally announced for reasons best know to the club he's on here.

And for anybody else wondering who Billy Murphy is:

Reading this list just highlights to me how little attention I pay to other teams....thought I'd look and see if any names jump out at me and so few do!

Can't remember if LJ was here when we had Spence, but if so I could see him being invited for a trial. Looked very tidy when we had him, which shows he's got it in the locker somewhere, but his career doesn't seem to have really happened since for whatever reason. Obviously a lot will depend on Matthews and Paterson there though (and whether LJ is even remotely interested!)

There are a few big names that I thought had retired a few years back, which reminds me of a Man City supporting mate's story of one of their managers taking over in the ?90s and being amazed how many big name players who he (as a professional football maanger) thought had retired were still being paid by Man City; albeit nowhere near the first team.

Fitting this criterion for me would be Hesky had I not know Bolton had taken a punt on him, and:

Matthew Upson

Jonathan Woodgate

Kenwyne Jones

Jamie O’Hara

Armand Traore

Alejandro Faurlin

Anton Ferdinand

What strikes me about this list, is the number of players who have either played in the Prem at some point, or or are being released from ex Prem clubs. To me, that would say that they were still on a pretty decent wage, and would have to probably lower their demands. Some drastically.

Some on the list (Joey Barton being the one that stands out) you would think will probably get himself at least another year at Burnley especially now they are up.

Rangers has been talking to him to try to persuade him to join them; he's still in demand.

Want to be looking at the younger prospects.

Aaron Kuhl would be a great shout and could compete for a CM role.

Plus, being son of Martin Kuhl is also a good shout :)

Like **** do we want any of the expensive over 25's! They're what got us relegated last time. We need to be strict and not over pay the journeyman in this league. Like poison.

Plenty of these so called 'bigger' names looking for one last free meal ticket out of the game. I think its within our interest to stay well clear of this type of player and dont fall into the trap of believing there hype, wasters the vast majority only looking for £££.

Rumours of a two year deal, sounds close to being done.

This is a good illustration of the standard of football in Scotland.  Burnley have only offered Barton a 1 year contract as he's 33, coming to the end of his career, and may not be capable of playing in the Premiership. (No Premiership clubs were interested in him when he joined Burnley). However, he can go to Scotland and walk into the Rangers team, with a nice 2 year contract. At the end of the 2 years he could easily carry on playing, for for some other Scottish clubs, probably until he collects his pension.

I think the Club and , more to the point SL has learnt a valuable (in all senses of the word) lesson. Yes , we do need experience to go with good quality younger players, but we need to be selective. Whatever you now think of Wilbs, he is a case in point. Good, solid pro and of great worth to the squad over the last few years.

True, but I also think he would do a great job for us next year. Still a good player, whatever sort of Nob he can be.

Absolutely agree with this. We can`t just go out and expect to compete with a squad made up of players aged 23. We need a few Wilbs types around the place and I`d sooner have him with his attitude as a role model for the younger players than some of the other 30 somethings out there who are just stealing a living for their last few years  like Jody Morris and David James.

Just how big are some of these clubs' squads? 29 out of contract at Blackburn, 28 each at QPR and Bolton, 22 each at Fulham and Rotherham. Most are names I've never heard of, or not heard of for years. QPR even have one of the cast of Plebs (Tom Rosenthal). Mind you, Rotherham seem to have quite a few regulars out of contract( Broadfoot, Frecklington, Derbyshire, Mattock, halford and Best). What are they planning?

Bit out of date chief, eg McCormack recently signed a contract extension at Brentford until summer 2017... So not sure how accurate the other teams' lists are...

Taking the inaccuracy out of it, as we know from above and our own Derrick Williams, here's the ones I'd be seriously interested in, as those who I think would improve our squad or young with serious potential - and assumes we don't bring any of the loans back:

Gleeson - Birmingham

Turner - Cardiff

Harriott - Charlton

T.Smith - Ipswich

Brownhill - PNE - only added him because he's on our radar

MacDonald - Wolves

Not many really is there, although not going to pretend I know them all, been years since I played Football Manager.

I really do not know what to expect this summer.

Lookman at Charlton but I think bigger fish are after him. Dan Burn from Fulham? There are one or two others but they would be well out of our reach like Gordon Greer at Brighton.

Yeah, Lookman will go to someone bigger / better than us (shock), so I didn't include him.

Greer - Brighton still in playoffs (just about) so not sure of his situation.

Burn - good squad player to provide competition, but wasn't convinced he was an uplift on what we've got.

Even with those added to my list, there's not tonnes about that fit our "DNA" is there.

Alefe Santos is being released by Derby according to the above. He's the young Brazilian (think he played on the wing) you was at Rovers but joined Derby after refusing to sign a new deal with Rovers.

May be worth a scout (and would also have a little dig at our neighbours at the same time).
