Mrs D is away for the weekend and I was just deciding what to do today - keep in her good books with a few jobs around the house this morning and then a round of golf this afternoon I thought.

Then I saw the telly while having breakfast and realised it is the Cup Final today and realised today is Cup Final day. How things have changed from when it would have been must see. The only up side is it means I won't be watching Manbloody U!

I'm old enough to remember as a youngster when you looked forward to the final all week and the watched the build up from a stupid time in the morning - how the teams got to Wembley, Cup Final It's a Knockout and loads of other rubbish to fill the time until kick off. The match itself was a major  event especially because back then it was the only live football you got to see on telly.

Do youngsters still get excited at the thought of watching the cup final, or are they convinced that the premier league is the only football worth watching?

I think it's more Prem And Champions League for them , as you said for us it was The day of live soccer on the telly and it really meant something.

It's a funny old game/world. Years ago, when we were kids, there was one (one!) full, live club game - the FA Cup final - on TV (unless an English club made the European Cup final) which was anticipated like nothing nowadays (well, maybe the new Star Wars film, or the latest Apple product). And with just three (three!) TV channels, two of them showed that same one match at the same bloody time!

Nowadays, the FA Cup final is just one more game of football shown live, after nine months of endless live football matches, and with many more live football matches to come, next weekend and over the summer. We've gone from one extreme to another

And there was always a real big deal over who got the better viewing figures (it was always BBC).

Having been at the game yesterday, I must comment on the fantastic atmosphere created by the Crystal Palace fans.

It was awesome and continuous, and from our seated position drowned out some of the pre match entertainment (?).

Fully agree, their fans were fantastic and showed that you CAN create an atmosphere at Wembley and at a cup final - despite what some will have you think on here

I do not think at this point Bristol City, its fans and Bristol Sport have developed a position where what happens regularly at Palace matches will occur at BCFC.

What will be the route for their open top bus tour? Presumably so the maximum number of their fans get to see it they`ll probably have to do it in Guildford or somewhere.

Starting in Guildford and ending in Peking I understand

Turned on the radio after 5pm hoping to find out who had won - then found out the game hadn't even started yet and was an evening kick off.  :shifty:

You can't have the FA Cup Final at any other time than the traditional 3pm start time, but then again they've made so many changes to the competition (not to mention semi-finals at the national stadium) that it seems they can't tarnish any more, what many say is "the greatest cup competition in the world"     (You can imagine Carlos Alberto spilling his pint hearing that)

Something of a poor game by all accounts, didn't watch and only got the eventual result as the winners and losers were getting medals and going up the steps.     Wanted Palace to win - if only for their chance after 26 years of waiting - but it wasn't to be and there was no shock or surprise result in this years competition.

The FA Cup Final is a largely insignificant event for me these days, I don't know about anyone else.   Too commercialised, and football often comes a poor second best.   When was the last time there was a truly memorable final or at least one that I took a genuine interest in ?.    Tottenham and Coventry in 1987 is perhaps the last example and recent years just haven't provided enough interest or belief that another year will bring anything different.

1909 for me. Unfortunately I was -86 at the time

I remember this all started because of how impressed they were with what we were doing in the EE as things had gone quite stale at SP. I remember we once put on a display V palace and watching what we were doing they replicated it and made it bigger and better.

Are you sure? Not doubting your word, but I went to the Wembley play off final with a load of Palace fans when they beat Watford to get promoted to the Prem.

They said their inspiration for the Holmesdale Fanatics activity came from Italy and they also said the Celtic Green Brigade influenced them.

And they knew I was a City fan so surely they'd have mentioned our EE stuff if it inspired them?

As I said, not disagreeing with you mate, I just heard different. But there's quite alot of them involved in their impressive displays so different people may cite different influences....

The fans group ( the Holmesdale Fanatics) who have made a significant impression on the supporter culture of CPFC started in 2005. Some of their members were impressed by the authenticity of the Eastend post 2007. They did not attempt to recreate that earthy authenticity as they do not really have that type of culture. The Nigels have done something striking to their support by going down a very foreign path.

I agree, my point is that many will try and tell you that Wembley is soulless and doesnt lend itself to a good atmosphere. Or that the ticketing systems dont allow like minded supporters to sit together. Or that there's too many day trippers to create a decent atmosphere at a cup final.

I think Palace proved all of that wrong. United fans were vocal on the trains, the tube and wembley way but in the stadium they were inaudible. However, I do believe that for a club of United's size and vast fanbase it probably is a lot harder to organise an atmosphere like Palace's.

Wembley does not lend itself easily to creating a good atmosphere.

The difference here is an element of Crystal Palaces support. A part of that support is highly proactive and organised to a degree that arguably is not seen at any other club in England.

So you're saying it IS possible to create an atmosphere if the supporters really give it a go? You're agreeing with me then :)

, I can imagine the posts on here now "if I want to sit down behind the goal then why shouldn't I?" "I'm all for creating an atmosphere but can't they do it without interfering with my own individual wishes?""Why are we copying foreign clubs?""My contribution to helping the club is to contribute nothing save criticising those who do".

No chance at this club.

If clubs and authorities are more open minded, Crystal Palace (like it or not) are showing that even at Wembley fans groups really can make a difference when allowed.

Elsewhere an opinion is the Palace support would have been even more impressive, if ever impressed at all by their particular style. Wembley has some very odd ground regulations that prevent fans doing as Palace do with their tifo displays at home.

I can imagine the posts on here now.

One lot would want the Crest but want someone else to pay for it.
Two would want #makingbristolproud and BS to pay for it.
Three would go for a Robin and raise money for it themselves while one and two coated them off for doing it.

No chance at this club

As a matter of interest, how were the masses of red and blue flags in the middle pictured organised/funded? Was it the Club or Supporters or both?

It looked very impressive.

It was funded by fans donations and organised by the Holmesdale Fanatics.
