Ashton Road/Marsh Road - Matchday closures

Over the last few seasons there have been a few discussions about potential road closures after the game following a number of near misses between pedestrians and cars.

It looks like the Club/Bristol Sport/Police/Council also see it as a risk as there appears to be an application to shut the road. The following message on the residents Facebook group, and whilst I can't guarantee it's authenticity it would appear to be a rather bizarre thing to make up.

"I have been sent notification of the temporary following road closure order

CITY OF BRISTOL

(ASHTON ROAD AND MARSH ROAD, ASHTON, BRISTOL)

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF USE BY VEHICLES) ORDER 2016

Notice is hereby given that the City Council of Bristol in pursuance of the provisions of section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended intend to make an Order the effect of which will be to close, temporarily, to vehicles the lengths of roads specified in the Schedule to this Notice.

The Order is required because of the likelihood of danger to the public consequent upon the need to facilitate the safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles during periods of increased pedestrian and vehicle activity associated with events and sports fixtures taking place at Ashton Gate Stadium and will be operative from 11th September 2016 for a maximum period of eighteen months. However, the closures may not be implemented for the whole of the period, but only as necessitated by the need to restrict the road during periods of increased activity (which are anticipated to occur 15 minutes prior to the scheduled end of any fixture/event until 30 minutes after full time).

 ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

north eastbound - Winterstoke Road, Luckwell Road, Duckmoor Road

south westbound - Duckmoor Road, Luckwell Road, Winterstoke Road, Ashton Road (part unaffected), Winterstoke Underpass, Clanage Roundabout, Winterstoke Underpass, Winterstoke Road

Highways Service (WH) P. MANN

PO Box 3176 Service Director Transport

Bristol

BS3 9FS

Tel No. Bristol (0117) 35 23768

SCHEDULE

Ashton Road - from Duckmoor Road to Marsh Road

Marsh Road - from Ashton Road to Winterstoke Road"

Long overdue.

I get the bus these days entirely due to the lack of parking around AG so have experienced driving around the area and more recently on foot.

It's when you are walking that you appreciate just how potentially dangerous it is with all the traffic around.

I suggested it is bsolutely sensible to close the road between the park and the stadium so we can flow in and out safely...but you should see some of the prejudiced nonsense coming in response. Have a look on the Southville, Ashton and Bedminster Facebook page. Apparently we are animals compared to the respectful folk who went to Ashton Gate in the 1930s!

Eminently sensible; a lot of people that are new to BS3 are very anti football, cars and anything to do with our traditions though. Makes you wonder what they expected when they moved near a Championshiop Football and Premiership Rugby stadium.

They expected to do what these people always expect to do, move in to an area they have no connection with and immediately set about changing everything they can to suit themselves and moan to the council about the things they can`t

They`d have the ground shut down if they could.

Indeed. ****'em. Sorry but the hoardes of leftie types that have swarmed the BS3 area over the last decade do my head in.

As a socialist and a long term City fan I mildly object bris red, but here are some comments on the Southville Facebook page

"how about fans walk on the pavement like anyone else is expected to?
If I attended a concert I'd be expected to stay on the pavement. If there was an event in the park I'd be expected to walk on the pavement.

Health and safety for crowds is walking on the pavement and being patient, not blocking the road outside pubs and on junctions for hours after a match is over.

The rest of the world is expected to walk and park in ways that are considerate to others, yet for whatever reason sports fans are not?"

"Not content with just taking over all our parking spaces, they now want to take over our roads as well. Pity the damn ground wasn't built at the Long Ashton site. It would save us all a lot of hassle !! Grrrrr !!"

"They fill the pavements & part of road outside El Rincon for well past an hour before and after a game - forcing anyone to walk in the road. They don't care about anyone or anything. They park all over double yellows that blocks cars or pavements nearby for hours and no one does anything. Buses have been blocked because they can't get out on Duckmoor. Put more parking enforcement out not let them gather in the street which frankly is an OK for fights & loitering."

I replied "There's a lot of references in this discussion to "they" and (in opposition) "us". Here's an idea - if you live round here why not embrace the fact that Ashton Gate has been the home of Bristol City FC since 1900 and guess what - thousands of people converge on the ground for home games now, just as they have for 116 years. For those few hours, for some days, for one part of the year, Ashton Gate is actually the heart of South Bristol. Those people ("they") are in fact "your" local community and have very right to get to and from the game safely when the numbers mean the pavements simply aren't big enough to cope - that means walking in the road safe from being knocked down."

This should not be a political debate. It shouldn't be a debate of any kind. It's simply common sense.

As for people "should walk on the pavement". I'd ask them when was the last time they left AG after a game? And how wide are the pavements?

I know thru experience just how crowded Ashton Rd get and how difficult it is to avoid walking in the road.

when I pointed out 43,000 were at the Gate in 1935 the response was " in those days football fans were respectful and well behaved, and most cycled to matches. You are talking about an entirely new breed of animal these days who goes to football."

Complaining about nothing,

how many locals use the route from Ashton Road with the ground on the left hand and Ashton Park on the right and head towards Marsh Road?

Have you ever waited at  Marsh Road to gain access to Winterstoke road, the lights take ages to change.

In my perfect world I would start the closure at Duckmoor road/Ashton road with access to residents only from 1pm until 6pm

As the "A" busses now use Winterstoke Road

No access to Ashton Gate from Winterstoke Road into Marsh Road which would allow a free flow of traffic past Marsh Rad towards Sainsburys.

In my very very very perfect World maybe get some portable LED displays(road closure signs) outside of Sainsburys and the KFC retail outlets stating

Football match finishes at approx 4:30pm ish

My rant over

I just don't get why if they hate football/football fans so much, why would they buy/live in a house near a football ground? Not like the ground wasn't there before pretty much any of them were born.

(or am I being too logical here?)

Sadly, a lot of the new demograph in BS3 are idiots. Absolutely no respect for the traditions of the area they've just pitched up at.
