It's not in the least bit pointless for clubs that win or reach the final. For most of these clubs it's the only "major" cup they will ever win. Some winners have been relatively big teams that have fallen on hard times, but many have also been small clubs that never achieve much - e g Carlise, Chesterfield, Crewe. I've been to all of City's finals and have enjoyed all of them, with the exception of the losses to Mansfield and Stoke. The 1986 win against Bolton, with Terry Cooper as manager, was a fantastic day. (Watch the Terry Cooper interview above) Almost as good was the area final when City came back form a first leg deficit of 0-2 to beat Hereford 3-2. It's not the cup that is a problem, just the awful structure of the early rounds.

But it isn't 1986 anymore, the playoffs exist for "little" clubs to get to Wembley now and the 2 major cup competitions are increasingly devalued by clubs in the top 2 divisions.

They are simply more irrelevant games of football, sparsely attended in most rounds whatever the format.

Getting to the final in the promotion season was more a sign of how far we'd fallen than any achievement.

We should just cancel all professional football and let Chelsea and Man City play each other every week .

That's entertainment.

Scrap it and the league cup.

Merge the 2 I'd say. Just have one competition for FL teams (no premier league clubs)

FA Cup style draw, no invites to U-23 teams or any shite like that.

This, IMO, would also enhance the FA Cup as premier league teams who are not in European competition would have one crack at winning a trophy per season.

Free pass to FA cup Round 3 during the following season.

Not a bad shout actually. May give the higher placed league 1 teams more of an incentive to field as strong a side as possible.

Pointless competition in my eyes. Premier league clubs aren't interested in the League Cup. Give the League Cup to teams in Championship, League One & Two. Everyone in the FA Cup. Problem solved.

Been saying this for years.

"Toys out pram" moment because they can't believe that the horrendous idea of including Prem reserve teams wasn't a roaring success and this is a big kick in the teeth for the "Master Plan" of B - sides in the Championship !

Wembely may have a big say in this though as they need the cash.

Obviously was never going to work for real fans.

Spot on. Back in the early years of the competition most clubs in the lower divisions had next to no chance of reaching Wembley so the prize on offer had something of value. But now two clubs from every division below the Premier reach the play-off final every season played at Wembley and have been doing so for years. The prize has therefore been diminished as clubs in the lower divisions do now have a one in twelve chance of reaching Wembley each season, not a one in thousands chance as previously existed when the competition was devised.

Needs a better incentive for the winners, maybe a europa league spot?

How's about a mini 3 team tournament - winner of the JPT/Checkatrade/LDV blah blah blah v FA cup winners v League cup winners.

If FA cup winners and League cup winners are the same, then make it a one off game. Imagine Man U v Chelsea v someone like Oxford. Final played at Wembo.

  1. Scrap the Checkatrade/League Trophy completely.
  2. Remove Premier League teams from the EFL Cup/League Cup and make it only open for Championship/League One/Two clubs.
  3. Keep FA Cup as it is.

That will sort out the lot in my opinion - start encouraging teams to play stronger teams.

I'd be interested to know how much clubs lose financially in the early rounds. Make it to the final and you make a cash profit. However if you're only in the first few rounds the away team has to travel and probably have an overnight stay at their own expense. The home team has to pay Stewards, Police, Gate staff and pay the electric bill for the floodlights.

If this competition is to survive, could the first two rounds at least be played on Saturday afternoons at the start of the season instead of friendlies?

Think this could be a solution. Would suggest a European place (or at least qualifying round place) for the winner. Revert the league cup to the 72 teams in the EFL. Gives all teams a shot at Wembley and the European place may ensure all clubs take it seriously. Many clubs in the EFL with good European pedigree. How great would it be to see City in Europe (not counting Anglo Italian/Scottish)

Random statistic; in the Southern area final of this trophy, City have beat Aldershot, Rovers, Cambridge, Exeter, Gillingham and Hereford. Five of them were relegated to (what is now) the National League a few years later. Gillingham is the odd one out, but looking at the League 1 table, they may be in League 2 next season.

"Buster Footman's T shirt", you'ld better warn your locals what's in store for them!
