Quote from Fulham mate...

I like him, but he never gets given a run of games. Works hard and good finisher. Lacks a bit of pace but he isn't slow

We'll see

Posted

For any who aren't too familiar with him, young striker who admittedly only scored 5 goals in 19 Championship appearances last season. Lots of people seem to sing his praises though.

Will defer to the opinion of the majority on here. I have to admit that I don't often pay much attention to opposing players, so when we're linked with X, Y and Z, I'm often scratching my head wondering who they are.

Not an awful return considering Burton (like us) were struggling last season. With good service this guy is a great signing.

about to post similar, extrapolated last season that'd been about 12.... which is very respectable at this level.

I heard last week he (Woodrow) was dead cert to go back to Burton?!?

Happy with this if true.

Would be happy with that. Sensible signing, knows the league and young.

Wasn't he very highly rated at England youth level a couple of years back?

Burton are targeting some good players - pretty disappointed they got Ripley over us.

Yep, shame. But I wish Burton well and hope they survive again this year...Then again, I hope we survive as well! Them staying up was the story of last season's Championship.

Played for the U21 as recently as this year, at the euros I might add but behind Tammy and their makeshift strikers in Gray and Redmond I think. Think he scored 5 in 14 appearances(don't know how many were starts) at Burton who was a not so prolific attacking team. I think he'd walk in and be at worst our second best striker. Right up there with Fam who looks dangerous for the most part through 3 league games. Would be a top signing even on loan and if we can negotiate a fee for January or next summer even better.

So why are Fulham ready to release him? Contract? Not right type or too similar sort of striker?

I don't want to appear negative about a player I know nothing about. However, type his name into Twitter and see for yourselves the Fulham fans reaction to him leaving.

I'm not sure. If I had to guess it's that they'd rather spend on what they feel is a more sure thing. Spent 5.5m on a striker already in this window and rumoured to be looking at others for up to 10m. They want to get to the premier league fast and maybe can't wait for Woodrow to grow to that level or feel he can't? Me personally feel he's a good championship striker. I'm not expert but when I've seen him play or on highlights he's always involved in the action.

So maybe a case of not good enough to get Fulham to the prem but maybe good enough to get us to top 10? That would be the hope and like I said I think he'd be our second best striker as soon as he walked on the training ground. We are a side that seem to create chances so with his record at Burton I would think he could net 12-15 goals for us over 40 or so games. I'm with @Davefevs on Woodrow. Be a worthwhile signing

Thanks- all makes sense and we definitely need that extra bit of experience/choice up top certainly until January window.

Not saying many Fulham fans will be crying if he leaves, but I can only see two Fulham fans who are very vocal, one of whom told Woodrow to "get out my club" on twitter

Yes - I created a new thread when I heard he was off to Burton, and thought it would be something we should try to hijack.

I'm certainly not a Twitter expert but from what I could gather, he seemed to have almost Baz Savage status. I'm happy to judge with my own eyes though.

Another promising forward youngster to go with O'dowda, Brownhill, Patterson, hinds, Engvall, Eliasson.

Đurić always injured.

Diedhiou, Taylor not proven at this level.

Reid fingers crossed.

If we are intending bringing in another striker IMHO we need to be investing in one who would be a first choice with with perhaps a decent record at this level. Expensive I know but how many more hopeful signings do we need?

This is a fairly interesting article, details how his progress at Fulham has stalled but also shows how things like his goals per game his improved with age...

https://cottagersconfidential.sbnation.com/2017/7/27/16018336/lvc-is-gone-what-about-cauley-woodrow

I certainly wouldn't write him off and , based on minutes played, his scoring rate now is almost 1 in 2, which is more than respectable.

P.S. Twitter doesn't seem that damning of him to me, more indifferent.

Really? Poor goal record and why do Fulham want rid if class?

Only 22. 95% of his appearances for Fulham would've been off the bench.

Decent goal return in a Burton side that don't create many chances a game.

Every time ive seen him play ive been really impressed by him. England u21 international with a good goal return.

Good in the air and quick for someone his height.

We could do much, much worse. We aren't exactly going to go out and sign someone from the prem for £10m

To be fair, I'm not exactly Twitterati myself, bu when I searched his name there were just two accounts being mean about him. Like you said though; we need to judge him with our own eyes really

I'd be a big fan of this signing, he's been involved with the England U21's for a few years & clearly has something about him.

My thought as to why Fulham are willing to get rid of him is that it always seems to be harder to break into your first clubs first team, it's not unusual for a talented player to not make the grade at his first club but to go elsewhere & come good. He must have something about him to of been involved at England U21 level for a few years & in my opinion, it would be well worth signing him.

Ahh... is this another Matt Smith type thing where we slag him off without knowing much about him and he actually turns good... nice thinking!

Not really mate. Just seeing what it's like to slag a player off before he's even played. Only messing

Underwhelmed by this from the five or six times I've seen him play but hope he proves me wrong

I'm just whelmed. I'm not overwhelmed or underwhelmed.

Isn't it strange that at one stage the word whelmed must've existed and was later prefixed with under and over and now they exist but the original whelmed is long dead. I suppose whelmed must've meant meh. So those who wish meh to go out of existence start using overmeh and undermeh.

Good player, and i would be pleased if he signed. Begs the question though just how many players are we signing, though hopefully this might be the one who comes in and does very well.

Since his first spell at the club. They were well down the pyramid before then so never had a forum

Ten years ago if you had told Burtonites they would be in their second season in the Championship they would have had you committed. Probably 3 years ago too

So you don't want Woodrow based off stats alone who's played at this level and for England youth but we're furious we didn't splurge on Vassell who's only played in League 2. Righto.

I remember a certain Aaron Wilbraham, didn't score in what 2 years? Before he joined us. Scored 20 that season? Stats are nothing. Some people just see stats and that's that.

Five senior strikers now and none with any pace

He's sharp over short distances, but not blistering if you get what I mean. He's one of those players who gets his toe to a ball and draw fouls as well as being a bit of a pest in closing down CBs. Willing runner, works hard, and will help us press from the front.

Would be able to play several role types, on his own, alongside another etc.

Dare I invoke the name... Jon Stead...?

Vassell is a pacy powerful striker with potential. Luton fans rated him higher than Gray. Check out Fulham comments on this guy. They are celebrating. Not what we need at all.

And I don't think you've watched either in a live game. Woodrow is only 22, (younger than Vassell) and also has potential to improve. Woodrow far too young to be written off. He's got lots of experience at this level for his age. Far less of a gamble than Vassell would've been and I would have quite liked us to sign him.

Some Luton fans said that, but others said he's not as good as Gray. Fan comments aren't that definitive.

Not what we need right now .

On the evidence of his goals last season, he can score headers, get in the right areas for tap ins and take freekicks and corners. What do we need? We've already shown we can create chances and score goals. What we need is someone who can finish. Seems like this guy can. I hope you're not going to say we need a speedster.

He's taking some serious bashing from Fulham fans on twitter who clearly don't rate him - granted, they don't represent the fan base as a whole but you'd hazard a guess that they've seen him play the most.

Genuine question, when have you seen him play and what has he done to make you rate him so highly? I'm only wondering because you seem to be fairly alone with your opinion!

Vassell never played outside of league two, Woodrow played at championship and is a England Under 21 international I know who'd I rather have,

And Burton fans are disappointed they're not getting him back for another season. Works both ways. This guy arguably has more potential than Vassell, having played at a much higher level and is still a year younger.

While this guy sounds OK he also sounds very similar to Engvall in terms of age/physique/experience in which case wouldn't it have been simpler just to give him a chance?

Apart from Woodrow scores goals. Proven track record at this level.

*unless he played against us last year, in which case I don't remember him standing out
