cidered abroad
I seriously wonder if modern footballers and coaches really have forgotten how to put the foot through a ball and really clobber it. What's your preference? Pat or Blast.

Esmond Million's Bung
if you are Lionel Messi you can caress it because you are good enough to do that, at our level leather it, Patterson and COD both passed it and that was disappointing. Mind you Smith hit one and missed the target by miles but Smith has a woeful scoring record and Bryan missed when a cross might have been better. If you're getting closed down and can't pass - then leather it. but......if you're taking a penalty then you have a distinct choice. Place it or whack it...... Correct, always leather it to the side on penalties and unless the keeper is a cat it won't be saved
old_eastender
As others have said Pato and COD both guilty of trying to pass it shooting from the sides, and effectively giving the keeper a pass back. There again Korey leathered it and skied it, when he would have been better passing it as he was central.
Lanterne Rouge
It always amazes me how many professional strikers sky the ball so often - Stoke were particularly woeful.
RumRed
In old school boots just toe punt it as hard as you can at the centre of the goal, if you have no idea where the balls going the keeper’s got no chance. See also bowling and batting technique, those good at sports tend to get quite aggravated when the opposition don’t conform. Running up the pitch as a batsman against a spinner so you hit it before it touches the ground really winds them up, especially if done so one handed. I’d suggest that technique only for friendly games though.

wendyredredrobin
You have to know when to pass it and when to leather it and that comes with experience.

Probably due to the noise made when hard leather boot cap made contact with heavy wet leather ball plastered in dubbin.
myol'man
I can remember an old guy sat in the lower Williams stand near the Atyeo end (always had what looked like an WW2 gas mask case around his neck!) , if City were under pressure he would shout LEATHER IT at the top of his voice

Well that literally just means "toe", or to be more specific "finger of the foot", so I'd argue it's even less poetic than the English version
