Who, like me is fed up with the word "great" being mentioned now during a game, it seems like every goal is great and every pass likewise, really annoying, a standard pass or goal is often described as "great"

What's your alternative adjective?

Superb, terrific, wonderful, fantastic, unbelievable, tremendous?

That was just his enthusiastic description of Frosties PSR. He could say all sorts of other things.

Just for you though:

Nearly as annoying as the incorrect use (or lack of, in appropriate place) of commas..!

Yes but we're not discussing grammar in this subject are we?, the post is about the use of the word great, so why not start a post about grammar if you think it's important

If it's just an average goal there's no need for the commentator to feel he has to make an impact with his description.

Most of us left this sort of ridiculous exaggeration for just about everything behind in our teenage years. It doesn't add to the excitement to over dramatize when it's so obviously OTT and contrived. ( Are you listening Screecher?)

These days it's often 'glorious strike', 'stupendous finish', 'cracking effort', 'sublimely taken', or 'incredible goal' ... and that's just for tap-ins. ;)

'Good goal, very well taken' would almost always suffice, and leave any embellishment until it is truly justified.

And if Rovers score, best not to mention it at all, but ffs definitely not during the City commentary. :grr:

The word that 'grates' with me is awesome.

The use of awesome is not as awesome as super awesome.

I appreciate it's his trademark but Chris Kamara does my head in. Even when he's at a really crap 0-0, it's 'unbelievable Geoff'. Really grinds my gears! :grr:
