The Official 'I don't really watch England any more, but I'm kind of, sort of, maybe watching/following England v Slovenia but only ironically/so I can moan about how bad we are/because I'm a glutton for punishment Match day Thread.

England v Slovenia I probably shouldn't watch it, but I probably will if I can find a stream in the US. Should win it but it will inevitably be labored and boring even if we score more than 2.

That's a thread title NTTDS would be proud of

Especially if the text under it went on the miss mentioning the match but went on to say that engineering works might cause problems if anyone was thinking of going to some obscure non league match in 3 weeks time.

I ******* hate watching England. Does anyone else think that at some point, we'll get so sick of the PL prima donnas that we'll have an England side made up mostly of Championship players? They'd care a lot more I'd imagine.

Posted

I actually have no plans to watch the game tonight

First time ever with an England game that I can remember. I'll probably watch a bit though....!

I always thought that there was a Character limit on a title

There is actually a limit, I was also going to add: /because I'm a glutton for punishment/because City are doing so well I need somewhere else to top up my gloom.

Yeah, well don't

VERY annoying title already

ZiderEyed has a point. The best championship players would probably do a much better job.  I'm settling down to what will likely be another night of boring football.

Whilst I like Gareth Southgate as a person, I can't get excited by his tactics at all.

Maybe we will get lucky and be surprised, you never know.

And this thread gets the prize for the longest title on otib.

I predict a dull 1-0 win and then all the pundits will rave about how England are in the world cup and the hype train will start to build for what everyone else knows will be another summer of disappointment.

Harry Winks should be in the team tonight not just a late call up cos of injuries.  Jake Livermore better though apparently!

Well I watched Match of the Day 2 weeks ago and that 2 minute substitute appearance showed that he is the real deal.

Make him captain.

I solved the problem the same way I always do when some crap is on the telly I don’t really want to watch but probably will in the hopes it is better than it ever is - place a bet or two

It matters more when there is money on it - feels sad that it would not matter otherwise !!

I'd want to see a side like that, but no manager would have the balls to do it

Shame really isn't it. Imagine Joey Bryan as England's left back!

I've always found a really bizzare correlation between how City play and how England seem to play, at different periods of time.

The England team always seem to have the same, frustrating style, factors & traits that we've had.

Let's hope the trend continues and it's time for both to shine, in a prolonged period of global dominance..!

Sorry but I do get annoyed how quickly players who look promising or half decent are picked for England.  It's completely counter productive given our lack of playing resources.  Winks is a squad player for Spurs.  That Wimmer was last season and he looked absolutely shocking against us.

For example, Ross Barkley missed probably 30 England under 21 appearances and 2 Under 21 tournaments so he could be a member of the full squad.  If he'd been kept down in the under 21s longer, he'd have far better experience and I suspect be in a better position in his career.  Instead, he was the new Gazza / Rooney /  Bobby Charlton after a handful of games and was picked too young.

Winks, Livermore, Henderson, none of them good enough for international football but that's how far we've fallen. If we were a premier league side we'd be West Brom or Stoke

Which is why we need to stop picking promising kids and pick blokes.   Let the kids learn in the under 21s etc out of the main spotlight and move into the main team when they are ready as opposed to being picked because everyone is crying out for the new Gazza / Shearer / Bobby Moore

Totally agree but the trouble is we've got no depth whatsoever. Southgate said it earlier this week ,some of them don't deserve to be in the squad. We really are in a mess

Watch Winks.  Quality player.  Just put him in I say. And maybe Tom Davies of Everton.  By the time the next Euros come around they would have played 20 games. Instead he picks players who have already failed.

Wimmer's ability has nothing to do with Winks. Unfortunately for him he has incredible players like Dembele ahead of him for Spurs but that shouldnt detract from how good he is and he is exactly the type of player that England need.  Our 2nd best player is Rashford so age shouldnt be a barrier either

I thought that was poor.  Not heard Michael O'Neill complain about lack of resources.  He simply makes the best of what he has.  He should make a point and pick some Championship players.  That would put the cat amongst the proverbial.

Henderson. Go on, entertain us. Do a forward pass. You know you can do it.

Really looking forward to watching 90 minutes of your sublime talent.

Trust me. It'll be riveting television.

Massive difference in pool of players to choose from, or there was. Ten years ago we had three  of the best central midfielders in europe , Scoles, Gerrard, Lampard but the **** sven had to play the massively overratted Beckham. Now look at us , the most talented English midfielder is Jack Wilshire who got glass ankles.

FFS Henderson's even looking backwards and delaying things in the friggin tunnel.

His head must be screwed on backwards. Therein lies your problem Southgate.

Sure it is just an oversight, but Sven stepped down after the 2006 finals, and Scholes retired from international football in 2004, so not sure what either has to do with our central midfield in 2007...

Don’t watch any England games these days, but Joe Hart starting over Butland says all you need to know about the backbone of our nations football....still don’t have one. Just go for the big names over ones that actually deserve to play on form.

State of that pitch mind. Sold out to the NFL

That's one of the more annoying things, they should stipulate that the NFL can't have dates X weeks before an England match to allow the pitch to recover.

I can't remember the last time I watched an England match, they are as dull and uninspiring as the managers have been.

The Premier League is fast attacking football, the England set up is just dull slow backwards and sideways crap. I see Joe Hart has still managed to con another appearance, amazing how this continues to happen. A lot of promise when he was younger but has never gotten any better. Should have been dropped years ago after being crap tournament after tournament.

I'm on about the Sven era rather than specific dates Mr pedantic.

Totally agree absolutely no excitement watching england love to see lower league players with a bit of heart playing. Uninspiring team selection Hart, Henderson Cahill must have something on Southgate

The only bright spark is Rashford, not 20 yet but he looks quality on the ball and so skilful, he must have nutmegged the full back 3 times already

If Russell Osman ever got to manage an international side this is how they’d play

Sterling is absolute dog shit.

He's basically Bobby Reid in the Prem.  When he has time to think he ***** it, when he doesn't he's great.

Rashford looks ok, the rest should be sent to the glue factory.

I genuinely think Marlon pack is a better midfielder than Henderson. I'm biased obviously it might be a bit tongue in cheek but he's more creative that's for sure.

A bit?!

The quality of ball England are putting into the box is shocking. It's all fannying about down the left followed by holding the ball up too long followed by shit cross followed by lose possession and start again.

Isn't it a damning indictment of England football that I'm not sure who'd win if they play Bristol City. Genuinely.

Yes kane and rashford would fear our defence.

Walker taking free kicks I think it's time to start considering boycotting England matches for that alone

While we are at it why is Kane taking them as well? I've never seen him score one. Yet we've seen Dier score one in the euros but haven't seen him take one since. Rashford score a good one in the Europa league but can't get a sniff. England just don't treat the game right. Every game should mean something and the aim should be to beat teams. Not share free kicks and penalties and that's a fault of management. I'm not English but I still watch almost every match and I'm still surprised by how nice it all is.

This is about how well they play together. England have some very good players but together they're shit.
