The Official Bristol City v Burton Albion Match Day Thread 12

Going to Burton, going for a burton and being as happy as Larry, dead or alive. Laurence Olivier famously remarked that he was as 'happy as Larry' after leaving Brighton following a season of performing there. Not considered a dump by any means but I think I would be happy too. As for Burton perhaps a lot easier to be happy to leave notwithstanding the superb array, even to this day, of beers which I wrote about in a match day back in August 2016. 'Going for a burton' has somewhat lost its use in recent decades. It seems popular to suggest one of the following might be responsible for the origins of the expression;

To 'go for a burton' refers to the beer brewed in the Midlands town of Burton-upon-Trent, which was and still is famous for its breweries. RAF pilots who crashed, especially those who crashed into the sea, that is, 'in the drink', were said to have 'gone for a burton'. Some commentators have referred to a pre-WWII advert for Burton's Ale, in which a place at table was vacant and the missing person was said to have 'gone for a Burton', that is, gone to the pub for a drink. That would be a very strong candidate as the origin of the expression if only any record of the adverts were to be found - and surely they would be evident if they ever existed. Until any do come to light it's reasonable to call the said adverts mythical.

Burton Albion Football Club is on a marvelous adventure that the Brewers and the Taylors will know all about from their previously humble beginnings. In Burton's last set of accounts at Companies House they made a gross profit for the year ended 31st May 2016 of just over a £1 million. That is no small achievement especially when it is on a meagre turnover of £4.2 million. They are probably most fans' second club in the Championship in terms of, shall we say, likeability. Everybody likes an underdog and for a club, founded only in 1950 to be playing in the Championship, the 5th best league in the world, frankly, is astonishing. Perhaps the biggest blemish on their copy book is the record defeat to a certain Bristol Rovers. Now, correct me if I am being too partial here, but don't you think most Burton fans would prefer to have that record set by a far more illustrious football team like, for example, Bristol City? In short, if our club thrash them tonight at Ashton Gate by a greater margin than the Gas mob then every Burton fan deserves to buy every City fan a bottle of Burton Ale. I mean, the ignominy of having that record from a League 1 or perhaps it was a league 2 team hanging like a cloud over one's head. It is a bit shameful.

I think there is little left for me to say this wet Manila evening other than to wish the lads well and hope Lee Johnson conveys a far more positive team talk than he did when interviewed about the match yesterday.

Is anyone else slightly concerned that this is a potential banana skin? Yes, we're playing really well and Burton have taken a couple of drubbings of late but doesn't that set up an away win perfectly?

Maybe it's because of last season but this could be either a 5 niller or a loss IMHO. All about the first goal, again.

I think that, along with what happened last season, is what's making me nervous MR.

I going for a comprehensive 3 nil but I'm extremely cautious about this evening I must say. Are we the 'real deal'? I reckon we'll find out a lot tonight.

Tonight and perhaps Leeds next up. As I noted in my intro I was taken by Lee's somewhat reticence to be over confident, not always a bad thing, but it came across almost as negative or too cautious. I hope that does not carry into the pre and ht team talks.

I think it's just exactly what we've all been saying that we mustn't take them for granted.

 I am pleased that everyone associated with the club is underlining the fact that Burton , like any club in this league , are not going to lie down and give us three points and that we need to work for them.

In the dressing room LJ will be more partisan I'm sure .

Going off at a slight tangent anyone else on here have fond memories of the snooker clubs often found above the Montague Burton shops.

Growing up in the 70's frequently spent the school lunch hour at the local club which was a dimly lit smoke filled haze filled with shall we say less than desirable characters at certain times.

As I grew up in North London it was frequented by half the Arsenal team and witnessed a game between Charlie George and the Scottish George Best - Peter Marinello before they left for the pub.

One of the many joys of supporting the City is you never can be sure what the result will be!

Recently I was at the Emirates for Arsenal v Brighton, it was pretty certain that Arsenal would win, the only question being by how many, which is something I’ve never experienced as a City fan. This actually detracted from my enjoyment of the game.

Think tonight will be akin to the Bolton game, not a great spectacle perhaps but have a feeling we will win 2-0.

I think alot of City fans are nervous after our small collapse after the last international break around this time of year, when we were 4th! Things are different, we will go 2nd tonight with a win, 2-0 to the City boys. Patience is required though.

Their away form has been last month a 5-0 drubbing, and creditable 0-0s at QPR and Norwich.

ould take a drubbing. It's purely down to the management staff and the players that we haven't been the Championships whipping boys since we got here. We've been absolutely magnificent, as a club and as a set of fans so far. I've never ever seem a set of fans clap their own team off having just been beaten 5-0 and 5-1 away from home. It made me proud. Like I said though, it hasn't all been rosy and tomorrow night may be another where we have to stick together come the end of the 90 minutes. We could take an absolute pasting.


I mentioned I  watch quite a bit of championship football, I'd like to think I got Leeds pretty much spot on and unfortunately I've seen even more of Bristol City and I'm even more worried. They've been sensational in patches.


They've only lost once in 11 in all competitions so far, losing to Birmingham of all teams. They're scoring goals for fun and they look pretty solid defensively, although I've yet to see another team really put them under a prolonged spell of pressure to see them really tested. In amongst some impressive wins in the league, they've also thrashed Plymouth and beaten Watford (away) and Stoke in the EFL cup, some of their play has been nothing short of sensational. They beat Ipswich 3-1 last time out and even though a couple of the goals took wicked deflections, they were still well worthy of the 3 points. 

I don't think it's come cheap though. The lad they signed from France Diedhiou (for an eye watering 5.4m quid!!!) will frighten us to death, he really does look to have it all, he's strong and quick with the ball at his feet, he holds it up well and shields it fantastically and he can finish with any part of his body. I'm worried if he runs at our back 3 without protection, he'll tear us apart on his own. If he doesn't get 20+ goals this season, I'll eat my hat.

Playing off him is Bobby Reid, a real little terrier, they defend from the front and he works his absolute nuts off. He's a bit clumsy at times with the ball but he seemingly always comes away with it, he's fast and he'll run the channels all night long, if he's up against Warnock, Stephen will have to give himself a 3 yard head start. He's got 7 goals already this season, again some of them fortunate but he's been in the right place at the right time and he's not afraid to take a shot on.

Most of the time they play with a 3 up front, Patterson almost given a free role to pick up the ball anywhere he wants in the final third, his quality into the box has been brilliant, he really does look like he's back to being the threat he was a few seasons ago. 

They've got a really solid 3 at the back, Aiden Flint has been really good for a few seasons now and he's a huge threat in our box on set pieces, a huge threat. I don't think I've ever seen a centre half get on the end of as many set pieces as he does. They've also signed Baker from Aston Villa, a lad who has played more than 100 premier league games, he's got to have a bit more about him than the average championship defender. Certainly another costly signing and Bailey Wright, a proper defender who'll throw himself in the way of anything and everything. The two full backs like to bomb forward, both comfortable on the ball and both capable of putting real quality into our box. I haven't even mentioned the midfield 3 and whether they play Pack or O'Dowda both have good quality and a real work ethic.

It massively helps that Johnson can keep picking the same players week in week out with 4 players being ever present and another 3 more with 10 appearances each. When the core of the side stays the same, it goes a long way.

If they play the way they can and have been playing, we could be in for a long evening. It's going to take every ounce of character, effort, graft, determination, skill, luck, call it what you will to come away with anything more than a dent to our goal difference. Sorry to be blunt. Of course I'm going to the game full of hope we can turn in one of our special backs to the wall performance where one moment of quality going forward nicks us the points.

I like Gary Johnson, he's a really intelligent manager and a nice bloke with it. I know this sounds strange but I wish they'd fired him when they were bottom 3 last year. He's a good manager who given time will get them challenging at the right end of the table. I really hope tomorrow they have an off night.

The two full backs like to bomb forward, both comfortable on the ball and both capable of putting real quality into our box. I haven't even mentioned the midfield 3 and whether they play Pack or O'Dowda both have good quality and a real work ethic.

It massively helps that Johnson can keep picking the same players week in week out with 4 players being ever present and another 3 more with 10 appearances each. When the core of the side stays the same, it goes a long way.

If they play the way they can and have been playing, we could be in for a long evening. It's going to take every ounce of character, effort, graft, determination, skill, luck, call it what you will to come away with anything more than a dent to our goal difference. Sorry to be blunt. Of course I'm going to the game full of hope we can turn in one of our special backs to the wall performance where one moment of quality going forward nicks us the points.

I like Gary Johnson, he's a really intelligent manager and a nice bloke with it. I know this sounds strange but I wish they'd fired him when they were bottom 3 last year. He's a good manager who given time will get them challenging at the right end of the table. I really hope tomorrow they have an off night.

My guess is, it looks a good game to give Elliasson or Leko a chance but not both.  Reckon Elliasson has been patient enough. Deserves a start.
