Yes, i knew that much, but not about his prohibition of his music .

I discovered something else about Cat Stevens this weekend.

I was talking to Italian friends and Glastonbury came up. I asked if they knew Cat Stevens, expecting not - especially the one in his 20s!

In fact, one (an English teacher) knew him immediately because they used his songs regularly in English lessons in schools. They are so simple, but well constructed that they are a used as a teaching aid.

And the friend in his 20s, who’s a musician, also knew him. Because when he was learning guitar he was often directed to Cat Stevens songs because the music is so simple but well constructed.

Having watched half the Elton concert last night and the other half just now, my own conclusion is...

McCartney won the best guest list by a mile but Elton won the the best show by a mile.

In general i like the pair of them about the same but didn't enjoy McCartney last year that much. Loved Elton's show though

Some review... ?

Mantra of the Cosmos reviewed
Gwilym Mumford
Gwilym Mumford

Glade, 8.20pm

Here come Shaun and Bez, swaggering on to the Glade like Madchester never died. Maracas? Check. Entirely unearned confidence in their musical abilities? Check. The boys are back in town with a new band – also featuring Andy Bell from Ride and Oasis, Zak Starkey from nepotism, and, for this performance, the Fall’s Brix Smith on bass. With this much talent on stage all at once, surely Mantra of the Cosmos can’t lose.

Well, obviously they’re terrible. “It doesn’t sound like the Mondays or Black Grape or Oasis or the Who, it’s what we’re doing all together,” Shaun Ryder has said of MotC’s sound. And he’s right in that it sounds like each member is playing in a completely different band at the same time. The rhythm section lurches and groans, Bell’s soupy riffs jarring completely with Starkey’s, ahem, pared-back kit work.

Ryder’s lyrics, usually just about on the right side of incomprehensibility, here are just complete nonsense (“Selling ******* Mars bars with a belly full of la-las”). For lead single Guerrilla Gorilla he just barks “guerrilla gorilla” for six minutes like a 15-year-old who has only just discovered a piece of wordplay that they’re extremely proud of. Meanwhile it’s almost impressive that Bez, after all these years, still doesn’t understand how maracas work. Smith, seems to have teleported in from another, better band, and is still acclimatising to her new circumstances. Generally there’s a sense that, at best, they’ve practised once backstage, 20 minutes before the set.

Which is not to say that watching them isn’t extremely enjoyable. How could it not be, with Bez – sporting a truly hideous oversized pair of Maharishi shorts and a sombrero – spending most of the gig either throwing free MotC T-shirts at audience members or trying to catch their hats? (“Good catch, Bez,” Ryder says, before pointing to an audience member and shouting, “You’re out ... Australia gone.”) And who couldn’t warm to a band who have to play their opening track again because, as Ryder says, “****, we’ve run out of songs.” So yes go and see them, tell your friends. Just don’t expect to like a single note of what they play.

**** me what a weekend. Far from the best Glasto I've been to but it doesn't matter. Comedown fully in motion right now.

Blossoms/Rick Astley covering The Smiths and Blondie were probably my highlights, two great sets and decent crowds.

That said, missing Courteeners was a kick in the teeth, the video @southside looks like it went off but I'd never seen Foo's before, so had to tick that off.

Also gutted to have missed this, but similarly had to see Blondie while we had the chance. That looks ace, Viagra Boys are ****ing great.

Not sure if anyone here managed to get to the SE corner too much. I'd never been to The Temple before, quite honestly probably the best music venue I've ever been to. Mindblowing.

Not confident about tickets next year. Once the Swifties clock that she's probably headlining, I can definitely see plenty of her fans paying £340 just for that and binning off the rest of the festival. Think ticket day will be more carnage than usual this time around.

Rick Astley might have stolen Glasto bar Reg's set. Just absolutely living his best life on the Saturday for sure.

Yeah the Temple is absolutely nuts. Saw Ed Solo there on Thurs in 2022 and was like woaaah this is just bouncing.

Spot on. Really hope they can do something about that SE corner in general though, it's a ballache to get anywhere near there most evenings, and the Shangri La was borderline dangerous at times. They've nailed the venue and the area but I think it needs expanding if at all possible.

They're playing the Saturday of the Forwards festival on the Downs in Sept so may have to pop along! The whole line-up on the Sat is really decent tbf.

I had totally forgotten about this. Amyl and the Sniffers are insane, and have heard good things about Jockstrap. Leftfield, Primal Scream and Aphex Twin all great. Definitely onto this now, top man.

Jockstrap's album is great, though doubt they sell many T-shirts.

Bristol's own Katy J Pearson too. Really solid line-up.

Going off at a slight tangent, but I am glad to read reports that Elton John was on form, as I have just been informed I have a ticket for his concert tomorrow night in Paris.

He was originally supposed to play in October 2021, but cancelled due to his hip problem, and now one of my daughter's guests has cancelled at the last minute.

So, I am now going with my wife and daughter.

He had better be good, though, as each ticket costs €195!

Luckily, my daughter got a large discount from her work.

Managed to find a route in on Friday , trader ticket allocation that was going spare

walked onto back of pyramid field just as foos started which was a bit of a moment as didn’t think I would be going this year and all came together at last min

Highlights were Elton , Cat Stevens (incredible voice), Guns and Roses (even if Axl can’t get all the notes anymore), Shame, my first ever visit to see Casseteboy/dj rubbish in glade

also watched Royal Blood, Arctics, murder capital, Lizzo, Rick astley, Blondie, lil Nas X and a little bit of henge in shangri la on Sunday before my legs told me it was home time . Enjoyed all

also had a good laugh in a bar called ‘hop and liquor’ post headliner on a couple of nights. Just banging out some great 80s/90s/noughties tunes and good vibes in there

spent way more time on pyramid than normal this year watching ‘heritage’ acts, so looking forward to checking out all the stuff I missed on the other stages now on iplayer. Got a long list going already

Has anybody on here ever attended a concert at the Accor Arena (Bercy, Paris)?

I have just found out that our three (expensive) Elton John tickets are not actually grouped together, and whilst they are apparently top class seats, I am now having slight doubts about effectively going on my own.

I have yeah

I'm off to see them in a fortnight in France. Cannot ruddy wait!

I actually missed them in favour of Elvana then Slowdive, but only in the knowledge that I'll see VBs twice this summer.

Sorry to address the elephant in the festival, but despite this being a hot sunny and vibacious (made up word) Glasto, there was one VERY CONCERNING issue that we need to be honest about...

I saw only two City shirts all week. Depressingly, I saw loads more Sag shirts. The only redeeming factor was I saw one (small) City flag - big ups to whoever took it!! - and definitely no flags for the other lot.

Everton, Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday were also up there in shirtage count.

All about QOTSA for me this year. Stonking

Saw them on a bill with Metallica in 1999 and didn't know too much about them at the time, though I do remember enjoying them.

I would have taken a lot more notice if I'd known who they were because I ******* adored Kyuss!

I am getting old.

‘Sniffers, Jockstrap, Primal Scream’ just sounds like the winner of a ‘short story in four words’ competition.

Foo Fighters, and QOTSA are not my kind of music to be honest, but I watched them both and thought they were great. Performance wise much better than Arctic Monkeys, whose songs I prefer.

I'm not into metal at all but Nova Twins were also thoroughly enjoyable and have a bright future.

I absolutely noticed the same... we spent most of our time around Pennards and the Park and it actually got to the point where my girlfriend was winding me up about it and we started a tally . Think we saw 7 or 8 sag shirts to only 3 City ones. I just put it down to Rovers fans being more likely to reuse clothes and less likely to wash...

Shepton Mallet just down the road from Pilton is a mysterious hotbed of Gassery.  I don't know why.  It's in the green and pleasant county of Somerset, that the Blue few often disparage.

Needless to say, these Sheptonian Gasheads don't actually go to games, but you do see them blotting the landscape in their clown outfits around town.  It might be pertinent to know, Shepton is the poorest and most run-down town in the Mendips.
