Just come in and found out all the football has been cancelled. In a way I expected this.

To then find Bristol are playing Bath at 5-30 tomorrow I find baffling.

Imho it shows the establishment is well and truely alive.

Very dissapointed and no doubt the media will be making a great play of how the crowd respected the minute silence.(those soccer people can’t be trusted)

Very angry to be honest.?

Worried about bad press too probably as someone else in the thread said though, varied tabloids

Possible headlime, "Does football think it is BIGGER than our MAJ" might be one example. Optics though rugby and to an extent cricket seems not to be so concerned.

Pretty much a given, especially since parts of the press seem hell bent on dividing parts of the country with faux outrage,

Me I'm just going to the pub instead tomorrow, I just don't get my 90 minutes off that's all

Yep...hopefully the next thing to be cancelled will be the World Cup......and then Christmas?  Then we can all Mourn the rest of our live's away. ?

Not sure what to say to that, that's not how national mourning works. It's a limited time period - 10 days.

Although cancellation of the world cup is almost 6 years too late - far too many people have already died to create it.

I'm looking forward to the king's speech at Christmas that will be different.

Christ this thread, it's pretty annoying but not the end of the world. Just do something else.

Visit an elderly relative, spend time with your kids, put a bag up your nose ... the choices are endless.

Yeh exactly. There’s loads of other sport on this weekend as well. Take your pick from F1, tennis, horse racing, cricket, rugby. Pretty much every sport you can think of except for football ?

So have I got this correct?

Football (including all grass roots and kids) and boxing are cancelled. Rugby, cricket and golf go ahead tomorrow. Horse racing resumes on Sunday and to cap it off the Bears are playing Bath at Ashton Gate early Saturday evening.

Currently there is no indication of when football will return.

Interesting….

Yeah let me summarise to keep it easy to follow... Working class sports are cancelled. Middle class sports are going ahead.

Now go and mourn peasant.

[This at least partly in jest]

PL quote “tremendously sad”…

I have a very different sense of scale to that.

I’m not a heartless bastard, but her death (RIP) has had no affect on my well-being.  In fact Football being off is more the impact.

I've also got a different sense of scale to that Dave,  basically I don't give a ***k

I think if the announcement that other sports were still on had been a bit earlier then we would all be going to the game tomorrow. As it is the FA took their shot early expecting everyone else to tow the same line.

*FWIW I think it’s nonsense that the game is off and having every ground in the country singing the national anthem would have been a far better tribute than cancelling 11 year olds football matches at Frys

You are right and now the Rugby Authorities are going to come under fire for playing on.

I've been on Twitter for most of the afternoon and haven't seen any evidence of this. Quite the contrary in fact, they've been congratulated for making a fair, sensible decision and communicating it properly.

Football's big problem is that it is more worried about "how things look" than actually dealing with facts and getting to the root causes of things. Once you start worrying about the wrong things, you take your eye off the ball and make decisions that are either slightly baffling or plain stupid. This has been evidenced many times over the years.

The Gate would have been fantastic tomorrow. Might have sold a few more tickets on the day, upwards of 18-20k people paying their respects, belting out the National Anthem and sharing the day with fellow like minded folk. You can tell people get comfort and strength from being with others; yes, there's a few goons that are at Balmoral, Windsor & Buckingham Palace to be seen on TV but for a lot of people, they are there (and would be at the Gate tomorrow) so they can meet up with others & talk about their memories of the Queen. Have a pint or three, raise a glass to the Queen (and to the new King) and celebrate a life well lived. Instead, many will probably spend the day grizzly, on their own, sat in front of the box and fed up. And feeling like that, many people won't bother to pay their respects anyway. The Queen will have been buried for nearly a fortnight before City play a home game, the moment by then will have gone.

Tell me that's the right decision.

That reminds me of one of my favourite gags I ever did.

A woman in work was bemoaning how she hated Charles shops as they were so expensive. She then said:

”And the thing is I always have to walk past it”

I responded “On the left hand side?”

I haven’t trawled back through this whole thread so I’m not sure if others have already said this, but I have a theory about why football is postponed and other sports are not.

Football is almost always seen as a lightning rod for all of society’s ills whenever anything major happens. Whether it’s player behaviour on or off the pitch, the amount of money in the game, fan behaviour… football gets bad press and gets hammered by those in society who don’t like the game. So, when we have a situation like this, the authorities take decisions based on what the backlash would be likely to be rather than on sound logic. This backlash would be led by sections of the press, but would also be shouted by people who just don’t like football and footballers and the decision to play on would be used as a stick to beat the game with forever and a day. So the FA etc. take the decision to cancel to take away that possibility, as they are terrified of the bad PR.

As @ChippenhamRed and others have said, it should be either all sport is cancelled or none at all. But football is often seen in areas of society to be different to other sports and this is, I think, why it’s the only major team sport to be affected in this way.

It is a ludicrous situation that kids can’t play grassroots stuff this weekend and that all amateur football is also cancelled. I know of several local clubs who are planning in house friendlies with the bar open so people can get out and play the game and see their mates. Crazy. But this is why I think we are where we are.

And this is where football has had a mare. If they’d cancelled league football based on the policing logistics and said in the statement, I think that’s fair enough. However they’ve cancelled it based on “respect”, and as a result have cancelled football needing no police presence, all the way down to kids.

That's a fair synopsis. All activities where there was clearly little or no threat to public safety should have continued. I'd argue that's more respectful than donning victorian widows weeds and having to listen to Nicholas Witchell endlessly talking crap about nothing.

So the Government line (which couldn't be clearer,) is:

"There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period. This is at the discretion of individual organisations. As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral. They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations.

If sporting fixtures or events are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions. As a mark of respect, and in keeping with the tone of National Mourning, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands."

Of course all licencing sanctions such as the approval for events to proceed via the local Police Commander would still apply and these may be curtailed at short notice. But its clear from on high that business should continue as normal, in a respectful manner.

Care to elaborate as to the boomer reference as in my experience it's usually an insult from the millennial generation x type.

It’s a reference to ‘baby boomers’ but isn’t necessarily ageist.

It essentially means a dated point of view that paints young people as entitled, spoilt and difficult without considering the wider context.

This is the key thing. I use Twitter and only have friends posts and news sources on my feed.

They just need to verify users ideally. 'But mer fredums!'

Which is ironic as you'd still be able to post pretty much whatever you'd like, it's just that like in real life, you'd be likely facing consequences. Think before posting etc.

Not going to scroll back through the entire thread but it doesn’t surprise me. I disagree with it but I can almost understand professional sport but why grassroots? Kids sports? Haven’t the kids suffered enough with missing out on sport, school etc & the vital socialisation & interaction these things bring at young ages. To me it’s just nonsensical.

It’s a good job her estate isn’t liable for inheritance tax

For anyone whose done probate - Imagine sorting that out !

Arguably probate would be a doddle compared to having to sort the Monarch's labyrinthine financial arrangements each year. Clearly the majority of assets are effectively held in trust on behalf of the nation, its not as though they could be sold on the open market. For example, Republicans love to cite the value of the Privy Purse each year never once mentioning that the Crown Estate alone (the Monarch's) gives all its income to The Exchequer each year, about 3.5x what they get back.

Farcical decision.

We had an opportunity to come together as a football fraternity and  coordinate a collective gesture to respect and celebrate her life. Hundreds of thousands at the same time across the country.

What better gesture from football supporters.?

But no, that was taken away from us by some old blokes in blazers.

Stupid decision.

Tonight I was in a bar in lanzarote, music on - until Charlie spoke. Deathly quiet while we all listened, few tears from some, then music back on and stuff the Westminster Abbey stuff.

Point being, people will show their respect in their own way and don't need an old man in a blazer to take decisions for them.

Way ott reaction from fa and efl.
