Birmingham City away match thread

Recommended Posts

Our maximum allocation of tickets for the 94 mile trip from Ashton Gate to St Andrew's sold out in a matter of days, so there will be great away support for this fixture.

They have a good recent record against us having only lost one of the previous seven encounters and doing the double over us last season.

They got a good point away against Sheffield United last weekend when Troy Deeney's first goal of the season stretched Birmingham City's unbeaten run to four games, however, they were beaten 1-0 away at Boro on Wednesday.  Brum currently occupy 19th place on 13 points. They have not finished in the top half of the Championship since 2016. They finished in 20th place last season.

Birmingham City Championship form: L W W D D  L = 8

Our form: W W L L L D = 7

Birmingham City moved from their Muntz Street ground to St Andrew’s in 1906 after outgrowing their original home. Away fans visiting St Andrew’s are located in the lower tier on one side of the Gil Merrick Stand.

They sacked Lee Bowyer back in July: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61144145 he was replaced by John Eustace. Who was assistant manager at Queens Park Rangers. Prior to this, the 42-year-old took his first steps in management with Kidderminster Harriers in 2016. Here is a profile: https://www.bcfc.com/news/all/in-profile-john-eustace

In July Birmingham were set to be taken over by a consortium led by former Argentina striker Maxi Lopez. However, the full takeover of the club has yet to be confirmed. It is thought that the consortium will pay £35 million over two years to complete their purchase of the Blues, with further updates expected shortly.

Lopez never represented Argentina at senior international level, but he enjoyed a good career nonetheless. He started it with Argentine club River Plate before sealing a transfer to Barcelona in January 2005. Lopez retired from professional professional soccer in 2021, blaming the pandemic as “one of the main factors” in the decision. In his career he wore the shirts of River, Barcelona, Mallorca, FC Moscow (Russia), Gremio (Brazil), Catania, Milan, Sampdoria, Chievo Verona, Torino, Udinese (all from Italy), Vasco Da Gama (Brazil) and Crotone.

Kal Naismith's calf injury will keep him out, Matty James, again due to injury and Joe Williams, due to suspension, will both be missing, Kane Wilson who is recovering from jarring his knee in his cameo against Queens Park Rangers will also be absent. Alex Scott is available following his one match suspension, he had this to say pre-match:

Timm Klose is set to be involved against the Blues after managing knee issues and personal matters in Switzerland.

Nigel ‘knee him up the arse’ Pearson had this to say pre-match:

Harlee Dean is close to returning for Birmingham after recovering from a leg injury which has kept him sidelined all season, and the defender may make the squad on Saturday.

The Blues have used a 3-4-1-2 in most matches this season, with Scott Hogan being their main threat in attack, having five goals and an assist to his name, and the Irishman is set to start next to Troy Deeney.

Manchester United loanee Hannibal Mejbri may be preferred to Juninho Bacuna in behind the two strikers, having been brought on for the second half against Middlesbrough and looking impressive.

Officials: Referee James Linington assisted by Shaun Hudson and Matthew McGrath. Fourth official Tim Robinson.

With the players available, I'd be happy with that line up or King for Massengo.

Semenyo back on the bench - should fire him up to come on after an hour and Conway has not done a lot wrong. He's been bullied in a couple of games but he's learning to cope with that.

If Massengo is selected he needs to up his game.

Can’t see King and Vyner starting in defence against Deeney, and Nige has said twice this week that Klose will be involved and how he was thrown in at the deep end at Preston last year.

That would be my lineup too. However I think Nige will go with King ahead if Massengo in midfield.

Agree that you can’t put Vyner in the middle against Deeney, he would struggle to cope with that challenge (as would Atkinson imo). Keep him on the right and let Klose deal with Deeney is about as good as we’ve got.

So would I if I was judging it on King’s contribution in midfield on Tuesday. For me we had reasonable control of that area until King had to fill in for Beckenbauer.

Yep once we got the early match jitters out of the way, coupled it on 25 mins with a tactical tweak to move King to DM and Weimann alongside Massengo, we dominated until Naismith went off injured.

”Kingy” is very good at creating receiving angles for his teammates, even if he doesn’t get the ball himself.

When we’ve managed to get him on the pitch he’s generally made a decent contribution.

For that 15-20 min period, we lined up:

                         Bentley

           Vyner Naismith Atkinson

                           King

Sykes Massengo Weimann Dasilva

                     Wells Semenyo

With King sitting in, it enabled Sykes and Dasilva to play high, but with cover.  It relieved Massengo of a defensive responsibility and we also got Weimann on the ball.

I hoped we’d come out exactly the same second half, but either Williams would go into the sweeper role (King back as DM) or t’other way round.  As it happened we went back to:

                        Bentley

             Vyner King Atkinson

Sykes Williams Massengo Dasilva

                     Weimann

                 Wells Semenyo

And I thought it left us a little bit susceptible on the break, as we saw early second half.

We still played ok though, up to the penalty area…I just worried we’d be caught.

Birmingham along with Wolves and Leeds seem to be clubs who no matter what bad form they have been in leading up to playing us and usually with their manager under pressure somehow suddenly play like world-beaters and get a much-needed boost after playing us. I have a horrible feeling another of those clubs that you can add to the list WBA will do the same when we play them, it's almost like we have lost the game before we even kick off against certain clubs daft as that may sound, I'm sure that there are clubs that hate playing us as well for the same reason.

Have to say the confidence I still had even after the Norwich & Burnley defeats has taken a big knock with only 1 pt from the last 2 home games.

At least we have Scott back for this one, and I suspect Conway too with Semenyo dropping back to the bench. Otherwise with Wilson having a niggle, it's just a case of whether King starts as a CB, or Klose comes in.

We need Weimann to get himself involved a lot more than he has done these last 4 games.

In our last 5 league visits to WBA we’ve only managed to stop them scoring 4 on one occasion. They still got 3 in that game ?

They certainly have the Indian sign on us I agree, they have been terrible lately and yet I would not put money on us to beat them when we meet.

Given our frailties at the back as well as injuries , it won’t happen but I’d like to see us switch to a back four of Wilson , Atkinson , Vyner and JD . Playing 3 at the back with half fit Or makeshift CB’s is suicidal ! If Wilson isn’t fit , pretty sure Sykes can drop to conventional RB ?

You suggest a makeshift CB would be suicidal, yet suggest playing Sykes, whose defensive skills appear somewhat lacking, as a makeshift RB, when we have Tanner, who is a RB, waiting patiently in the wings - which is an expression, not a play on words ?.

I've not kept up completely with availability of players, but from what I have caught , I wouldn't be surprised at going back 4 and King sitting in as a screen. I'd worry about height at the back so maybe a time for Pring to come in ?

                         Bentley

Tanner - Vyner - Atkinson - Pring

                        King

          Massengo - Scott

                  Weimann

             Conway - Wells

From listening to Nige, I don’t think he will go with a back four, he mentioned that Rob is an introvert so wouldn’t play him in the middle (of a three).  I guess he would say the same about Zak in football terms.

As others have now posted….Tanner at RB rather than Sykes if you’re intent on playing players in their positions.

He lets a lot go in a match and rarely awards penalties.

Should be a very close game, but I think they'll out-muscle our back three (well, at least two of the 3) and get the 3 points.

Rarely awards penalties eh?, that's gonna ***k us up ?

They have not finished in the top half of the Championship since 2016. They finished in 20th place last season.
