Norwich City at home match thread

I would have pulled the trigger on Nige after West Brom on Boxing Day, most clubs would have pulled it long before that. It felt like we were miles away and regressing. Games felt toxic.

Today it became clear to me that only now are we seeing a Nigel Pearson constructed Bristol City. Today’s performance was the archetype of my expectation when he arrived.

Patience is a virtue in football.

Which was with respect rather ridiculous.

Performances up until that game were actually quite decent. 2nd half Vs WBA wasn't too good but certainly no where anywhere near if the manager deserving to be sacked.

Luckily those that run the club could see the progress that was being made off the pitch and could see that it was only a matter of time before the results matched the performances.

Been there for some years now, as you might guess ?

I like Port wine from mainland Portugal but find Poncha, from Madeira, unusual to say the least. It reminds me of cough medicine - tastes awful but does you good

Ultimately my case was built from the thought process that whilst Pearson had been important in laying down much needed foundations it was time for a new manager with fresh energy to benefit from them. Similar changes at similar times have given this club success in the past.

In terms of league position we had not progressed, could not hold a lead, problems from day one of his tenure were persisting and it was far from ridiculous to be suggesting that we could go to game with the right to expect much better than what we were being served up.

Ultimately, it has indeed been fresh energy, fresh ideas and a change of approach that has led to the bulk of this run and a rejuvenation, just from the existing manager. I’m over the moon that is the case as I’ve never wanted something to work out as much as I want NP to succeed. I don’t believe those wanting a change (after a toxic afternoon which saw manager and fan relations heavily strained) were ‘ridiculous’, just wrong. At worst short sighted.

Differences of opinion are what make this game what it is.

Poncha of course is punch, so generically any fruit flavoured alcoholic beverage, although technically distilled, and the português version uses aguardente or fire water which I'm sure is an "acquired taste" (me having acquired it so long ago that I can't imagine not having acquired it, more specifically bagaço which is distilled from the grape residue remaining from the wine process, and must be homemade or "caseiro" to be understood, and as such is highly alcoholic to an unmeasured degree and in effect more akin to class A drugs than any form of alcohol you may be used to).

The bit I like about this City team right now, is that I am not expecting a late equaliser if we're only one up at 80 minutes. The defence really need to take a bow for the evolution we have seen in the last couple of months

Yes, we're tough!

You're probably aware that Mehmeti came through the Norwich academy. Saw him play a couple of times for our reserves and he didn't look like much of a player... really pleased for him that he's forged a career for himself.

No, so thanks. Encouraging so far.

Yep, both worked their nuts off, Bell managed to contribute a bit more to our attacks, but even though things didn’t really go for Wells there were a couple of lovely controls and layoffs.

Funny innit, I thought McLean had a good game, your other midfielders were all “fur coat and no knickers”, and I can see them going missing when the going gets tough.  Giannoulis I thought was good second half, but Sykes had the better of him when we got attacks.

Kenny didn't play badly overall, but struggled to stop Scott influencing the game, especially after his booking. He has consistently been one of our best performers this season, I love the guy but he gets a ton of undeserved stick from our fans.

Dowell was anonymous, Sara his usual frustrating self (flashes of brilliance, then goes missing), Nunez poor too. We really lack a specialist DM, have done since Alex Tettey left. Gibbs played well when he came on, but he's more of a box-to-box midfielder.

wanted to pass mention on yesterday's game.    First and foremost congratulations on your Robins victory, I always enjoy seeing them lose and get beat (norwich, not yourselves) and what's more that's going to hurt further their promotion objective.    I read on the BBC sports page that it's your first victory over them since 2009 or something.   You have to go back to that time for Town's last victory over them, at least you've beaten them (at last), for us it's still 12 + years and still waiting.     I don't want them promoted, we can't really allow the that opportunity, not if we're to play them again next season IF we can get promoted from this miserable League One division.

you had 24,000 at Ashton Gate yesterday ?   Not being patronising in the slightest but thought that was a very good attendance and something to take pride in.    In fairness that's a venue on the other side of the country i don't get to see regular attendances all too often, so if you bring in that amount quite often then i take the time to apologise.   Just struck me as a fine crowd for a good game and encouraging result that's all.

i say count your blessings maybe.    All right BCFC won't necessarily be promoted, but think you're really safe from any relegation threat even at this stage of a season and got a plum F.A. Cup tie coming up where the chance is there to pull off another big score and exciting result.    Don't doubt yourselves, just believe in your abilities and take each game at a time, that's all anyone would expect.    All right ?   Got to leave it at that.

Thanks for dropping by and glad you enjoyed the result.

It’s funny how results against local rivals seem to go in phases. It’s been so long since we played ours competitively that a whole generation can’t remember it. But when we did, we had a decade when we couldn’t beat them for love nor money - including one occasion when we played a two leg cup tie, managed a win away and then lost at home to go out! And yet either side of that were decades where we won almost every time.  So, just console yourself with the fact that when you do turn it round it will give you a long spell of superiority!

Enjoy the rest of the season: maybe see you at Ashton Gate next season - although probably best you don’t go looking at the current thread about that possibility!

Batter the North Bristol scum please, then we'll call it even. ;)

Do Norwich fans get a scarf with their ST’s? Genuine question.

I’ve never seen so much coordination in a group of away fans. Replica shirts cardigans and scarves galore

I think you might be right. I live in Norfolk and went to their FA Cup match against Blackburn and most of the fans seemed to have new scarves. I thought they all got one off Delia for Christmas.

I find this quite an unexciting way to view things, the same as all the "enjoy him whilst he's here" stuff about Scott.

If you're being pragmatic about it, playoffs would probably be unlikely. But we're playing well, have momentum and gaining confidence - nothing wrong with looking up the table instead of down and enjoying the ride.

Well there were plenty that had us going down 10 games ago they look like being wrong so what the hell you could well be right, and whatever happens this season keep the majority of this side together for next season and I reckon it could finally be our time.

Nothing better than sitting in a bar Camara De Lobos with a nice poncha ( or three .)
