Those of us long in the tooth could probably come up with several teams of favourites but I would have to find places for: GK Jan Moller. The best keeper in my time, despite being in poor team. What I'd give to have a young Moller now. CB Gary Collier. The best centre half we have produced. Youngsters, think of a home grown Adam Webster. Various positions Trevor Tainton. The most underrated player in my time, could play RM, CM and RB, though I liked him best at CM. LM Alan Walsh. Scored over 100 goals for us, got the most of any player in our 4 year spell in the top flight & then came back when we were skint in ‘82 & did everything he could to help put us back on track. The most modest, lovely bloke too. I spoke to Gerry Gow at a supporters do once (I was a bit pissed) & he said to me “he’s my mate so I’m biased but he’s an all time great”. Spike Posted May 8, 2023 Report Share Posted May 8, 2023 I've got loads if I'm honest but excluding current players, the ones that I admired the most were Scotty Murray because of his dedication to the club and influence both on and off of the pitch and Shaun Taylor who I'd kill to have a player like him today, he was strong in the air, commanded the backline, no nonscene, got stuck in, exactly what we've lacked in our centre backs for a long time now. I think a good centre-back can change the entire defence, especially one that leads and commands it well. I agree with all the names thus far put forward but will add a couple to the mix that haven't yet been mentioned: Clive Whitehead. As a winger particularly during the promotion season and the first season in the top flight he was exceptional and to my, perhaps biased, mind the best winger in England. He would mesmerize defenders when he had the ball as he went past them and his crossing was superb. Just watch the highlights of City's first match v Arsenal at Highbury 1976. Kevin Mabbutt. Skillful young striker. Not many forwards can boast of a hat-trick at Old Trafford. Joe Royle. His all round forward play in the top flight was a masterclass. If I base my choice on who my Dad and me were most disappointed to see were missing on the team sheet back in our day, I would probably say Tainton. That was a fine era with great players but he seemed to make the side tick, linking the defence to attack via Whitehead and very versatile. Also close would be Merrick and Gow for different reasons. I'm afraid health problems along with a house move down here have prevented me seeing City this season...first time for over 55 years. So I've missed Alex's progress unfortunately. But when he was breaking into the side previously I noticed how good he was at getting fouled....Grealish style. Turns out Grealish is his hero so not a bad person to mould your style on. Alex has a bright future ahead of him. So, in answer to your question... the Scott in my team is indeed Super Scotty Murray. Especially THAT season when Tinman was supplying the ammo and Scotty was firing the bullets. The opposing teams knew it was coming.... but could do nothing to stop it. Gutted when he left, hero when he came back. Dave Smith, never seen anyone cross that well at full pace. Clive Whitehead , still the best winger I've seen.
