My favourite City players

Recommended Posts

Probably not the best team,  just the players I looked forward to seeing in a City shirt.

GK  Gibbo.  Better than Yashin

RB Les Wilson. Not here long enough

CH Flinty. No No No!

CH Norman. My favourite player of alltime

LB Micky Bell. We got Micky Bell

RM Scotty. Super Scott

CM Gerry Gow. He's here.....

LM Tinman.  Majestic

ST Cheese.  I still have an utter dislike of Shilton.

ST John Galley. A million miles

Anywhere. Bas Savage.

Manager.  Fred Ford.  A gentleman

Trainer. Buster.  T shirt and bucket. ?

Could probably do with a few subs, but that'll do nicely for now.

Those of us long in the tooth could probably come up with several teams of favourites but I would have to find places for:

GK Jan Moller. The best keeper in my time, despite being in poor team. What I'd give to have a young Moller now.

CB Gary Collier. The best centre half we have produced. Youngsters, think of a home grown Adam Webster.

Various positions Trevor Tainton. The most underrated player in my time, could play RM, CM and RB, though I liked him best at CM.

LM Alan Walsh. One minute he was dropping deep to ping 40 yard passes, the next he was beating a full back with the Walshy shuffle and whipping in a cross, the next blasting in a goal from 20 yards.

Tom Ritchie by a mile, gets in any team of any era.

Scored over 100 goals for us, got the most of any player in our 4 year spell in the top flight & then came back when we were skint in ‘82 & did everything he could to help put us back on track.

The most modest, lovely bloke too. I spoke to Gerry Gow at a supporters do once (I was a bit pissed) & he said to me “he’s my mate so I’m biased but he’s an all time great”.

Gerry (RIP) knew his stuff.

I've got loads if I'm honest but excluding current players, the ones that I admired the most were Scotty Murray because of his dedication to the club and influence both on and off of the pitch and Shaun Taylor who I'd kill to have a player like him today, he was strong in the air, commanded the backline, no nonscene, got stuck in, exactly what we've lacked in our centre backs for a long time now. I think a good centre-back can change the entire defence, especially one that leads and commands it well.

Also, Dariusz Dziekanowski, what a player he was!

That's a pretty decent list but as you're still a youngster, here are a few more to add.

Atyeo, Jimmy Rogers, Tommy Burden, Mike Thresher, Jack Connor, Brian Clark, Jantzen Derrick, Trevor Tainton.

John McPhail is a forgotten man but was very important for us at the time. An experienced centre half and a leader when we needed one.

No, Bas Savage is my  Maverick.

He plays where he wants.

A late addition to the subs bench (thanks to Spike jogging my memory) Shaun Taylor has to be in there.

Gary Shelton, unless i've missed him, he always makes these kind of lists for me. Agree with all above i've seen play myself, 85 onwards.

I liked his partnership with Rennie in the promo season under Jordan.

Off the top of my head, my team of favourite players would be:

Welch

Orr, Flint, Newman, Bell

Murray, Shelton, Tins, Walshy

Super Bobby Taylor, Riley

Dave Smith, Mark Gavin, Shaun Taylor, Howard Pritchard, Steve Neville, Alex Scott and Martin Scott would be in the squad.

Is Scotty, super Scott - Martin Scott, Alex Scott or Scott Murray?

I’m guessing Scott Murray with the super reference but all three could be considered worthy of a place.

I've been watching City since 1970. I agree with all the names thus far put forward but will add a couple to the mix that haven't yet been mentioned:

Clive Whitehead. As a winger particularly during the promotion season and the first season in the top flight he was exceptional and to my, perhaps biased, mind the best winger in England. He would mesmerize defenders when he had the ball as he went past them and his crossing was superb. Just watch the highlights of City's first match v Arsenal at Highbury 1976.

Kevin Mabbutt. Skillful young striker. Not many forwards can boast of a hat-trick at Old Trafford.

Joe Royle. His all round forward play in the top flight was a masterclass. Had played for England, iirc, just a few months before joining us.

This is a forum equivalent of a bar of chocolate.

Having said that a tough choice. If I base my choice on who my Dad and me were most disappointed to see were missing on the team sheet back in our day, I would probably say Tainton. That was a fine era with great players but he seemed to make the side tick, linking the defence to attack via Whitehead and very versatile. Also close would be Merrick and Gow for different reasons.

Gerry Gow for his tenacity and vision.

Clive whitehead for his speed and crossing ability.

Norman Hunter for his no nonsense defending  (bite your legs)

Paul cheesley out and out stricker.

HNM for his turns , moves and non stop running.

I'm afraid health problems along with a house move down here have prevented me seeing City this season...first time for over 55 years. So I've missed Alex's progress unfortunately.  But when he was breaking into the side previously I noticed how good he was at getting fouled....Grealish style.  Turns out Grealish is his hero so not a bad person to mould your style on.  Alex has a bright future ahead of him.

So, in answer to your question... the Scott in my team is indeed Super Scotty Murray.  Especially THAT season when Tinman was supplying the ammo and Scotty was firing the bullets.  The opposing teams knew it was coming.... but could do nothing to stop it.  An amazing time.

So many favs.
The original T.C. as Manager at 40ish bombing down the wing ?
Has Chris Garland had a mention? Gutted when he left, hero when he came back.
Dave Smith, never seen anyone cross that well at full pace.
Clive Whitehead , still the best winger I've seen.
Daren Barnard , Dave Rennie , Ade Akinbye , Carl Shutt , Albert of course.

The longer you think the more you can come up with.

Yes Scotty was great to watch and has of course gone on to be a real club legend.

Hope you manage to get down next season, you may even still get to see Alex!
