Sarina Wiegman to replace Gareth Southgate?

What Mark Bullingham actually said, from the BBC:

Bullingham went on to say Wiegman "could do anything she wants in football" when pressed if she could potentially take over from men's boss Gareth Southgate.

"Firstly, I think it's a bit disrespectful to the Lionesses to project it as a step up," said Bullingham.

"People always say it is 'the best man for the job'. Why does it have to be a man? Our answer is always 'it's the best person for the job'."

Which the media distorts (shock!) into her being in the frame for managing the men's team.

Though she is hugely impressive in many ways so I would have no problem if she was. Managing an international team is a bit of a specialist job these days and she is certainly a specialist.

Far too negative when we were 1-0 up in the final, don’t think that was down to the players

Totally agree. Italy were an utter shambles in that first half, totally there for the taking. They couldn’t string 2 passes together and we sat off them and let them feel their way back into the game.

was really poor from us.

And then when Italy came back into the game and it looked on the cards they'd equalise Southgate done sod all to change anything until the inevitable happened and they drew level.

If England win on Sunday (and I think they will); then the pressure on Southgate to deliver a trophy intensifies further. This can only be a good thing.

Are you joking,as much as I want the women to win you are comparing chalk and cheese regarding the teams the men have to play to win a World Cup

Can we cut the bullshit, no she probably couldn't.  I don't want to take away from what she's done it's amazing but inferring that directly transfers to the mens game is nonsense. The women's game is very different to the mens game, can we just not appreciate the woman's game for what it is, bloody fun to watch without the constant direct comparisons to the mens game?

Perfectly put

I’m not making any comparison at all !

Clearly the men’s game is totally different to the women’s.

My point stands though, it will increase the pressure on Southgate if the Lionesses win on Sunday.

No, because all of England does not give a **** about Bristol City.

England fans care about the England team though, and it’s lack of success.

English football fans also know that the standard of the women’s game still leaves a lot to be desired,if you honestly think a women’s team in any sport winning should put pressure on a men’s team then I’m flabbergasted

It’s a completely different game so I couldn’t see her managing in the men’s game just yet.

Plus she reminds me a bit too much of Sven…I think it must be the glasses.

Not just a different game, its almost a different sport!

Forgetting the difference in genders, which would be an untested dynamic in itself, in terms of standard it would be like appointing a manager who had done well in non league to the biggest job in English football

I guess the argument here is not about the women’s game compared to the men’s game…they are chalk and cheese.  I watch them with a different mindset.  I don’t expect the women to do certain things because of power, strength, pace, but I can still enjoy it for other things.

But this is a comparison, in the main, about the merits of one coach over another, not the standards of the game  Why couldn’t a women be a better coach than a man?

FWIW I think Southgate has and is doing a good job.  I think he’s built a bit of a club mentality at international level, and we are consistently in the mix in big tournaments.

Precisely. Any differences of the kinds you mention are irrelevant. The coach after all isn't on the pitch!

I agree with what you say about Southgate and Wiegman has done the same. You can see that both squads like and respect their coaches. That goes a long way in international football.

Are we constantly in the mix because we have quality players now all over the park who Southgate can pick from or because of his tactical nous,I would say the former which goes for Wiegman as well

I can’t relate sorry fella. It has no relevance at all. Was there added pressure on Southgate after the women’s team won the Euro champs?

I know you aren’t directly comparing the men & womens game but why does the mens game even need to be mentioned at all? Totally separate and not helpful for the womens game in my eyes.

Why would that increase any pressure on Southgate any more that England winning the Rugby World Cup, Some English bloke winning Wimbledon or me landing a job as head of recruitment at the Playboy mansion....?!

All totally unrelated to the men's English football team.
