Lanterne Rouge
Bowie at the Taunton Odeon on the Ziggy tour is, and always will be, the best gig experience of my life. It got me into a lifetime of loving his music. The Pogues at The Studio was amazing as well, the whole building seemed to be shaking.
ralphindevon
David Bowie - 5 times at 4 different venues. MK Bowl 1983 probably the best.* Massive Attack- Carcassonne Oasis - Toulouse x2 Stranglers - many times Wembley Arena probably the best. Simple Minds - Colston Hall Suede - Toulouse Arctic Monkeys - Carcassonne & Ashton Gate These stand out as my favourites among many others. * I had tickets for a 6th gig, walking distance from my home in France but he had a heart attack a week before. Gutted.

I only ever saw The Stranglers towards the end of their career at Showerings Pavilion in Shepton but they were still great, as were The Cure that were on a week or two before. I saw Simple Minds at MK in 82 and was rather disappointed but it was a full day thing and the support bands were so good (Doctor & The Medics, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions,, The Waterboys and Big Audio Dynamite) so you were pretty much worn out by the time SM came on. It was also the day England lost to Maradone`s handball and Jim Kerr was really rubbing it in as you can imagine! I actually saw LC and The Waterboys twice that weekend as I`d seen them at Glastonbury on the Saturday and driven over to MK overnight for the Sunday! Happy days!

Lanterne Rouge
Saw some great stuff at The Bierkeller back in the day - All About Eve, The Blues Band and The Men They Couldn`t Hang are just three I remember vividly. The Proclaimers at The Studio were excellent too.

I would have loved to have a seen Bowie at Taunton but I was only 9 so a bit too young. He also played Torquay I think around then, according to friends around here. The only time I saw him inside was in Cardiff, he was supported by Morrisey and they’d had a bust up and I think that was Morrisey’s last time supporting him. That and the fact it was a Monday night seemed to add to the not brilliant atmosphere and although I was very close to the stage, it doesn’t stand out as the best Bowie gig I’ve seen.
Norn Iron
Live Aid (Wembley - Bowie was far, far better than Queen, and I wasn't a great fan of either) Bo Diddley -Bierkeller XTC - Locarno ZZ Top Birmingham Odeon (Eliminator tour) Worst gig U2 - Locarno (October tour) Best gig U2 - Colston Hall (War tour) Peter Gabriel - Hatfield Poly 1977. (His warm up gig to his first UK appearance since leaving that other band. Only 200 there). Loads of Dr Feelgood and Thunder gigs. Dave Edmunds warm up gig at Reading Uni. Featuring in his band Steve Cropper, Graham Parker, Dion (another 200 there) Like others have said, loads of other gigs. Bristol in late 70s onwards was great for gigs. Never made it to The Thekla though.

At the time, they were still doing pretty credible Clash-inspired post-punk rock and John Peel was regularly playing their stuff. Of course, a couple of years on they sadly descended into their awful stadium rock phase, and lost me forever

My extreme annoyance at this gig was because including encore, they were on stage for 45 minutes. I was so annoyed that the following day I returned my unopened, shrink-wrapped October album to Strawberry Fayre in Broadmead. They let me exchange it for Squeeze East Side Story. What an album that is. Anyway, I was offered a ticket for the War tour. Now that was a gig! Bono climbing up to the balcony courtesy of the stage based PA stack and what an album to promote! Incidentally, I know I saw the Comsat Angels as a support band at the Locarno. Were they the support for the October tour?
1960maaan
Never been a fan of Festivals, put off 'big gigs' having tickets a mile away for the Jam's farewell at Wembley. I did go to one real one, IoW 2004 (I think) line up was decent. Bowie, Who, Manics , Charlatans , Snow Patrol. "Normal" gigs Jam the day after Lennon died was great . TBH the Jam were great each time I saw them. Specials 1979 Beat 1980 For somewhere I didn't like the set up , the Bierkeller gave me some of my fav gigs.; TMTCH , Icicle Works, Strypes , Damned , Seahorse. Belly at the Fleece is a stand out, I love Tanya Donnelly . The Fleece has been a fav venue for a while. Saw the K's there a while ago just brilliant. The first gigs I saw were mainly at the Locarno/Studio ( though the very first was Tubeway Army at the Colston Hall). As I said Specials and the Beat were amazing , but Madness first Stiff tour after leaving 2Tone , Secret Affair and many more. I have to say I'm glad I saw Motorhead there on the Merry Bastard Christmas tour and have to mention .... Colonel Kilgore's Vietnamese Formation Surf Team at the Locarno. Local band , no label , sells out Bristols biggest venue. Now that's impressive but add, they had big screens showing Apocalypse now each side of the venue and it was immense. The pile of confiscated army kit by the doors was hilarious , helmets and fake weapons. Live they were brilliant but did produce one cracking album.

Whatever, it seemed dangerously over capacity for that Jam gig in December 1980, it got scarily crushed down the front there for a bit.

Yes I can remember one of them, maybe the second, with them being more moody than usual. Plus there were some technical problems, quel surprise in France. Also Noel getting angry with a fan who kept shouting something in French. Saw a few gigs at the Bikini too, Suede, Pete Doherty amongst others. Quite an intimate venue. I remember Brett Anderson walking off the stage during an instrumental part of a song and standing next to me where there was a gap by a pillar. I felt like I should say something as we were shoulder to shoulder like “great gig man” but I wasn’t sure if he was about to burst Into song again at any minute and my well meant praise would have echoed around the whole venue, so probably wisely I stayed quiet. Bristol Rob
A sightly random one. Hadn't heard of them previously but they played one of the stages at a V festival (so post Phoenix), rare to find a band that can get my moving from the first beat. But congratulations to the Dead60s, they managed it. Edited November 19, 2023 by Bristol Rob

Yes, I read that. I have it stuck in my brain cells asking the ticket girl at Virgin Records what the capacity was and hearing 1200 as her response. Maybe before elfnsafety the ballroom was 2000 but dropped big time in the 80s when fire risks became a top priority.
spudski
Having read the above lists, it's amazing how many I have been to as well. Indeed...great gigs. My list is purely based on emotion and what I felt that day. Some may have not been the greatest gigs...but all made a massive impression on me at the time. King Swamp Cardiff Uni 1989. Link as no one will know them. Omd Colston Hall 1980 Simple Minds Locarno 1982 TFF's Gold-diggers 1985 U2 Colston Hall 1983 INXS Wembley 1988 INXS Victoria Rooms 1993 Crowded House Hammersmith Odeon 1991 Talk Talk Imperial War Museum 1986 PSB Duxford 2014 The War on Drugs Bristol 2022 Depeche Mode 2013 Manchester. The Cult...every one I've been to. Seen some classics and massive bands above these...but these made a mark. Yeah every time GDC are on a line up I say to myself I'll see someone else for a change, then end up at the front for their entire set! Caravan Palace were the closing set at Boomtown 2013(ish) and their live show with loads of fireworks on the town centre was quite an experience. Haven't been to Boomtown for a good few years now, am definitely considering it for next year though.
