Wedlock’s Pub

Not sure if they own the Wedlock’s site, but I do know that the abandoned toilets next door are owned, strangely enough, by the Highways Agency!! 
 

Quite what they want with it I’ll never know. But might explain why nothing is being done with it as there probably just holding onto it in the hope of making a profit.

Alternatively they could reopen it as a public convenience, it’s a shame our mayor can entertain Pie in the sky projects yet can’t find money to run/ maintain the public toilets in Bristol. 
       As an older chap working outside most days I have to go to South Gloucester area to take a p*ss!

Weird. I’d always assumed they were owned by the council.

As noted earlier, nothing to do with the council. It’s privately owned by the Highways Agency.

Yep. I always figured that too. But recently found out it’s not the case. 
 

Makes me wonder if there are other buildings that we assume are council owned and we think things need to be done, but actually are not the councils responsibility.

Strange wording , hardly an asset when it could easily be put to its original purpose. 
      Just like everything in Bristol it’s gets left to deteriorate so eventually has to be flattened as it’s deemed too expensive to repair, exactly what Marvin’s allowing to happen to the Cumberland Basin.

Asset`s just a word that`s used in these sort of things. It just means something they own. They ought to reopen them though.

Such fond memories of that place, I remember the night game against cardiff  possibly 2000. They had a police escort through the park and everything not nailed down was  emptied and launched in their direction, the police charged into the pub batons swinging, I got a couple of clunks to the back and (God bless him, RIP) Scooter got one right on the hooter, leaving him with a very bloody nose, much to my amusement, now anyone that remembers or knew Scooter will know why thats funny (for those that didnt have the honor of knowing such a lovely man, he had a rather large nose).  That pub really could tell some stories, not many tried their luck and those that did failed.

Agree a new pub there would be a complete non-starter though. The police would never allow a massive home pub right behind the away end. 

No idea why the flats haven't been built. Would work fine as a build to rent scheme.

Agree it is well run. And anywhere that sells a pint of Gold for less than 4 quid gets my vote.

Does anybody remember the day Hull City fans made the mistake of trying to enter the Ship and Castle (Whitning Yard) singing we are the nutters the nutters from hull? my god they got a battering. I bet when they went back home the word got around never EVER try to go in there again.

I’d agree apart from when we played Sheff Wed at home in Nov 2004, the year after we lost 1-0 up there under Danny Wilson. Sauntered in there are lunchtime and it was full of their finest.

Lost to Norwich one nil, which ended my dreams of going up that season.

Decent lad was Scooter. Only really got to know him in the BS3 in later years.
Solid City lad. Many stories to tell, but not on here.

I work in heritage protection and it’s astonishing it wasn’t listed, football association & pub combo are always hard to convince HE/EH of their significance though. 
 

Still a crying shame culturally that it was demolished.

As I work with National Highways, I'd be amazed if they know its theirs!!

Another one here with some great memories of the Wedlocks (and the Star, as was), best most of them stay buried, although I must admit after some nights in there, I don’t have total recollection

It is a real shame that it was closed and demolished, with some thought, as others have said it could have come under the clubs ownership and been used for something, even it was a club shop and cafe (continental style, where you can get a beer would have been good).  Plenty of space upstairs that could have been used.

I think there was a Friday night home game against either Fulham or Chesterfield that was being televised, we went 1 down after about 12 minutes and having already been in drink, I decided City were playing terribly and I would be better off spending the remaining amount of the game in the Wedlocks.

No idea what the final score was, how I got home or if it was good idea.
