Wedlock’s Pub

Was discussing this on a nice Boxing Day walk around the docks. Must’ve been a good 20 or so years since it was boarded up before eventually being demolished.

At the time I’m sure it was meant to have had flats built there but the site is still empty, boarded up and a bit of a sorry sight (along with the former public toilets next to it) There was talk of some kind of restrictive covenant on it barring any further development on the site but that just seems a bit weird.

Not getting much luck googling it but anyone have any idea why it’s just empty land that’s just a bit of an eyesore nowadays?

I would imagine it’s quite a difficult development because of what’s gone on with AG and the future sporting quarter development.

From a planning perspective, you’d want anything that happens on the Wedlock’s to be complimentary to AG, so you’d want the quarter finalised before you did too much. Also possible there were S106 agreements tied to the quarter around the Wedlock’s.

From a developer point of view since it was closed it’s gone through a recession, AG being rebuilt which reduces desirability of site in that period, Covid and now a COL crisis. The banking isn’t a huge shock in view of that.

Ask the Council Reg, turn up in a blue & white quartered shirt & they’ll let you build anything on it, don’t even need planning permission.

South Bristol, where’s that?

Seems a very good place to put a small development so no idea why it has been allowed to become an eyesore.

Although an Ashton Boy Cuz I have never been in Wedlocks, how sad is that. Perhaps our Chairman might buy the land and build a BCFC pub. Cider £1 pint.

Nice thought, but I can't see SL or JL subsiding anyones cider.

Especially as they have their own interests in the current outlets at AG and also the future outlets in the sporting quarter.

Such history and such a huge loss.

If I was SL/JL I'd get it rebuilt brick by brick.

Seriously.

You could make it a club themed pub and consolidate it within the group, subject to Cost:Benefit analysis, running at a profit etc.

If running at a loss..no commercial point and the cost of redevelopment vs the current outlets may also make it pointless.

They keep talking about a museum…. Why not combine the two!?!?

Last time I remember being in Wedlock's was the day of Charlton in the FA Cup, as I was going out the door Michael Grade was walking in (like he was walking on to a yacht). Was he wearing a hat? Was he smoking a cigar? Was he giving "it" the "big 'un" ? Had Les Kew not known who the frug he was/turnt him away from the Directors' Lounge? I'll say yes but don't hold me to it.

Funnily enough one of my memories of that game was Grade sat at the end of a row in the second block nearest the open end, had a cigar in his mouth all game, pretty lively at the end of the game as well by the park !!!

I remember my dad taking me in there before games when I was a young child. I didn’t go in there much as an adult, it always looked so busy I thought it’d take ages to get served. I vaguely remember being in the garden on a boiling hot day listening to City fans exchanging insults with away fans who were on the other side of the fence in the park.

Pretty sure Alan Yentob was in there that day ....

Also remember seeing Michael Grade in the pub (not sure now if it was the Wedlock’s or the Nova Scotia?) before the Charlton FA Cup tie the year we knocked Liverpool out (so in ‘94) they beat us at AG & I’m pretty sure then drew Man U away.

Good chance we were there together?

Probably. It was rammed in there before that game. Very disappointing result

To be fair the weekday trade up there these days would be totally unviable for sustaining it as a pub (although I wonder where the converted Superbowl flats go for a drink) but there is so much history I agree it is shameful it just got quickly demolished - if they could have created other uses it'd be a great alternative to the Sports Bar and outdoor stalls which are rammed when open, could've been a cost effective museum and maybe digs or two apartments for youth players, in an authentic historic spot.

Used to dip in there for a quick drink when we found out it was a delayed kick off. 😂

Not sure if they own the Wedlock’s site, but I do know that the abandoned toilets next door are owned, strangely enough, by the Highways Agency!!

Quite what they want with it I’ll never know. But might explain why nothing is being done with it as there probably just holding onto it in the hope of making a profit.

We drew 1-1 at home, lost 2-0 away I think.

They`ll sell it to BCC as it would be perfect for an underground station......................................

Alternatively they could reopen it as a public convenience, it’s a shame our mayor can entertain Pie in the sky projects yet can’t find money to run/ maintain the public toilets in Bristol.
As an older chap working outside most days I have to go to South Gloucester area to take a p*ss!

Weird. I’d always assumed they were owned by the council.

As noted earlier, nothing to do with the council. It’s privately owned by the Highways Agency.

Yep. I always figured that too. But recently found out it’s not the case.

Makes me wonder if there are other buildings that we assume are council owned and we think things need to be done, but actually are not the councils responsibility.

Strange wording , hardly an asset when it could easily be put to its original purpose.
Just like everything in Bristol it’s gets left to deteriorate so eventually has to be flattened as it’s deemed too expensive to repair, exactly what Marvin’s allowing to happen to the Cumberland Basin.

Asset`s just a word that`s used in these sort of things. It just means something they own. They ought to reopen them though.

Such fond memories of that place, I remember the night game against cardiff  possibly 2000. They had a police escort through the park and everything not nailed down was  emptied and launched in their direction, the police charged into the pub batons swinging, I got a couple of clunks to the back and (God bless him, RIP) Scooter got one right on the hooter, leaving him with a very bloody nose, much to my amusement, now anyone that remembers or knew Scooter will know why thats funny (for those that didnt have the honor of knowing such a lovely man, he had a rather large nose).  That pub really could tell some stories, not many tried their luck and those that did failed.

In fairness, the Rising Sun appears to be doing very well and comfortably sustaining itself. I go there in the week sometimes and it's cheap, busy and really well run.

Agree a new pub there would be a complete non-starter though. The police would never allow a massive home pub right behind the away end.

No idea why the flats haven't been built. Would work fine as a build to rent scheme.

Agree it is well run. And anywhere that sells a pint of Gold for less than 4 quid gets my vote.

Plenty of great City memorabilia too.

Does anybody remember the day Hull City fans made the mistake of trying to enter the Ship and Castle (Whitning Yard) singing we are the nutters the nutters from hull? my god they got a battering. I bet when they went back home the word got around never EVER try to go in there again.

I’d agree apart from when we played Sheff Wed at home in Nov 2004, the year after we lost 1-0 up there under Danny Wilson. Sauntered in there are lunchtime and it was full of their finest.

Decent lad was Scooter. Only really got to know him in the BS3 in later years.
Solid City lad. Many stories to tell, but not on here.

I work in heritage protection and it’s astonishing it wasn’t listed, football association & pub combo are always hard to convince HE/EH of their significance though.

Still a crying shame culturally that it was demolished.

Another one here with some great memories of the Wedlocks (and the Star, as was), best most of them stay buried, although I must admit after some nights in there, I don’t have total recollection 😀

It is a real shame that it was closed and demolished, with some thought, as others have said it could have come under the clubs ownership and been used for something, even it was a club shop and cafe (continental style, where you can get a beer would have been good).  Plenty of space upstairs that could have been used.

I think there was a Friday night home game against either Fulham or Chesterfield that was being televised, we went 1 down after about 12 minutes and having already been in drink, I decided City were playing terribly and I would be better off spending the remaining amount of the game in the Wedlocks.

No idea what the final score was, how I got home or if it was good idea.
