Never to the dark side
I only found out that Arsenal v Bristol City game in August 1976 had second half live commentary, can't think there could have been anything earlier.

Local radio broadcast live commentary of games during the 60s. BBC covered all Div 1 games in the 50s. So I'm guessing we had commentary way earlier than 76.

It was the second half of a Football League match; totally random choice of game and from any of the four leagues, Div 1, Div 2, Div 3 North and Div 3 South. The match chosen by BBC was not publicised before the programme, as far as I know.

To help the listener picture the scene, the pitch was divided up into a grid of imaginary squares, square one being around the goalmouth. Thus, whenever the ball went out of play for a goal kick, or someone made a boring pass-back...the commentator would groan: "Back to square one". Hence the term used today...back to square one. When my father went particially sighted, he'd listen to Radio Brizzle commentary and would often moan that he didn't have a clue where the ball was and wished they'd bring back the grid system. handsofclay
When I was doing research to assist David Woods mainly at The Central Library but also other city libraries, I found myself at the Bath library and studying wartime matches discovered that a game between Bristol City and Bath City in about 1944 had live commentary on national radio. 1
redysteadygo
If you were in hospital you could get the live broadcast from the little shack at the back of the open end. 1954/55 my first games and it was there then.
REDOXO
I can remember radio 2 doing the second half of a second half randomly. I remember being on my holidays in benidorm and going off to the pub with my old man to listen to whoever was on and then Sports Report.

Yes the long forgotten hospital broadcast hut. If I remember correctly it wasn’t so small and was supported by iron pylons. But I was quite young

It had been shown in local Bristol cinemas in 1934 on the 25th anniversary of our appearance in the final. Radio was a bit behind film. There was no radio coverage of the 1909 Cup Final as radio that could broadcast voices hadn't long been invented. The BBC, for instance, didn't start broadcasting until 1922.

Red Exile
I study broadcasting history - a really useful source is the Radio Times archive which you can browse here: https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk @Never to the dark side The earliest record I can find of a City match being broadcast is here: https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/page/ea8daa29fa954c9aa17d8c34468d57fc 13th January 1934 - City v Derby in the Cup. The BBC was the only broadcaster in Britain at the time and the FA were much happier to have matches broadcast than the Football League - hence the FA Cup being such a big deal in the 30s. 2
