Former Htv presenter Sam Mason will have to wear an electronic tag for six months after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified. Mason, who is battling alcoholism, escaped a prison term when she appeared before magistrates in Weston-super-Mare yesterday for sentencing on motoring offences.

She was given a two-year community rehabilitation order after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified at an earlier hearing.

The court also imposed a six-month curfew, requiring her to stay at home between 7pm and 7am, during which time she must wear an electronic tag so her movements can be monitored.

Mason, aged 36, of West Mall, Clifton, Bristol, who appeared under her married name of Samantha Bush, was banned from driving for 12 months.

She had also admitted driving with no insurance and to speeding. Her licence was endorsed and she was also ordered to pay £250 costs.

Presiding magistrate Geoff Mills told her that she had avoided prison after the magistrates heard from her father, Colin 'Rocky' Mason, of Oldland Common, Bristol, and former HTV colleague Richard Wyatt.

Mr Mason told how he and his wife had disowned their daughter when she "sank to the very bottom of the barrel" and began drinking excessively.

He said: "We didn't like her lifestyle and the people she was mixing with.

What she did was disgusting." During that time, Mason lost custody of her daughter, now aged nine, although she now has regular contact.

Mr Mason went on:

"She has made a determined effort to improve herself. She knows how she has shamed her mother and me, but she's turned the corner."

Mr Wyatt pleaded with the magistrates not to send Mason to prison.

He said: "If you can find some way of helping her without locking her up, that's the best thing you can do for her. She is weak, but basically she is a good person." Mason is currently living on sickness benefit and her solicitor, Jeremy Culpan, said she was not fit enough to work at the moment.

He said: "This lady is crying out for help."

Mr Culpan said Mason's husband left her when she was three months pregnant.

Mason committed the offences on May 27 last year - less than two months after being banned from driving for 12 months by Bristol magistrates for failing to provide a breath specimen.

She originally denied the offences before changing her pleas to guilty.

I would make a shrewd guess that the majority of the blame for any problems this girl has lies squarely on her own shoulders. However nice to see the usual huge turnout of social workers on this forum and sure she's feeling better already for all your concern.
