If you were around then (& I was), not really.

This was the year of Heysel, the Millwall riot at Luton on TV. Pretty sure our one at Reading was the year before.

Football was seen as violent, an almost exclusively male pursuit in crumbling, dangerous stadia. Definitely not cool.

A lot of the 80s was like this.

Whatever any of us think about the Premiership, Sky’s influence & the rest, the rose tinted nostalgia for that time is to a great extent, misplaced.

Has gone too far the other way though now. Zero atmosphere at most stadiums and our fans are miles behind the rest of Europe and South America in terms of fan support in England.

I think our fully fit starting 11 is absolutely good enough, don’t think they are overhyped at all…….however underneath that 11 i would agree there are very overhyped players, Joe Gomez being a big one. Not a chance he is in that squad again if he wasn’t at Liverpool. I’m not fancying Watkins at the top level either.

Agree. I do genuinely think we have a few great players, but quite a few overhyped and not good enough for the top level (Gallagher, Chilwell, Watkins, Bowen) being a few to name.

I worry when we play a game against a similar level opponent and it's 50/50 whether we have what it takes to win.. I just don't see it.

Strong argument that the best players in La Liga and Bundesliga are both English. Not sure we've ever been able to say that before.

Plus a plethora of English talent in the Premier League.

Us and France will have the two best squads in the tournament this summer.

Kane, Bellingham, Saka, Rice, Stones all great players. Not sure Foden is being utilised well for England.

Think aside from those most of the players are decent to average.

Our players don't half get overhyped by the media which doesn't help.

I genuinely don't understand how one can be proud of a flag (unless they'd personally designed/made it).

Yeah ask those on X that have EU, Ukraine, Palestine and Ireland flags all on their handles, the absolute weapons.

Anyway on the England flag - It doesn't really bother me, but I don't think Nike would have tried it with any Eastern European nations as they'd have kicked off because patriotism is pretty big in those countries... I guess that makes them far right racists.

It's sad to read that post from only 6 months ago.

I think if we are completely honest none of us expected NP to be here long term, and  at the start of this season I expected that a combination of his age and health would mean him not wanting a new contract at the end of this season. With the work he'd put in, I anticipated that come the end of the season we'd be in a good position to attract a decent quality manager to take things on - perhaps being able to do things with the team that NP couldn't because of the financial constraints under which he was forced to work.

It is increasingly looking like the club forcing Pearson's departure mid-season has been a massive own goal. Compounded only by the club now finding itself in a no win position, as if things continue to deteriorate on field then sacking Manning will only confirm the flawed decision to sack Pearson and appoint Manning. The danger of not sacking Manning is that it could well continue to unravel all the rebuilding work Pearson undertook in difficult circumstances.

Unfortunately this could well turn into the latest version of City's one step forward, two steps back approach.

Bristol City - proven exerts at clutching defeat from the jaws of victory!:grr:

The problem is we sacked him at the wrong time, then appointed a manager who is the total opposite to NP in every single way. This was against everything NP, Richard Gould and Curtis Fleming were striding towards whilst they were at the club.

It was the aboves basically saying we want to rip all of that up and start a brand new approach, when all they had to do was keep NP here until the end of his contract and appoint a younger, but similar successor.

It is so sad we have ripped up all the principles NP laid down over 2 and a half years for a 'modern' and 'emotionless' approach.

The crux of the problem is Jon Lansdown.  Nepotism never works.  Lansdown senior needs to get his son out of there, appoint a top of the range CEO and let him run the club unfettered, including the appointment of an experienced Head of Football and possibly a new Head Coach, although I’d give Manning the benefit of the doubt with professional people around to support him.

Totally agree. He is the problem behind every single thing wrong at the moment with City.

I've heard things about how dictatorial he is about the smallest things the club does. Steve has allowed him to have too much power.

He's like a child, to me.

Isn’t that exactly what withdrawing your support (i.e. not renewing a ST) is doing?

Nope. Withdrawing your money from a club that has been providing a poor product of entertainment for over 5 years now is totally fair enough. Blindly renewing season after season whilst being unhappy with what is on offer is just silly.

Withdrawing support as a fan? No chance. Still want the club to do well, but if you don't like what you're seeing and how the club is being managed then show some courage of your convictions and walk away until things change.

  8. Video is extremely cringeworthy. Making out AG is a fortress. Dream on.

If you really want to make it a fortress then we need to rewind the clock 30 odd years where the crowds were actually very hostile and unwelcoming to away fans and opposition. Like a ******* library nowadays.

Yeah Mark Robins who played at the highest level most of his career and is an experienced Manager. We had the same, but we decided to sack him.

I feel like I am a bully picking on Liam Manning as I inevitably do. If you are reading this boss, it's nothing against you personally. I just simply think, in fact I know, you are not up to the job.

I am not blaming you. You were put into this situation by the Lansdowns and BT. Don't trust them to ever run a crèche, they'd be getting the kids to play in water dangerously way out of their depth.

I have been going to Ashton Gate since 1970. The Pearson sacking was the worst dismissal and most unwarranted of a Bristol City boss in all those 54 years. Prior to that I would say the John Ward departure was the highest own goal in terms of how that was handled and then subsequently panned out, but the Pearson sacking usurps that. (Although the kind of constructive dismissal of Cotts is up there too.)

Having lived quite a few years now I am no longer surprised that certain members of the elite just don't have their fingers on the pulse. They live detached, privileged lives. They didn't like a mainly popular Bristol City manager and believed they were all powerful and could dismiss him as it is their club. Not that of the thousands upon thousands who pay good money and invest their money and HEARTS in the club and its fortunes.

So they sacked a popular manager and mentioned top six squad and the need for front foot football as a means, they thought, to win the backing of these strange fans who liked the bloke they despised.

In his place they have installed someone who just isn't up to the job. Once again, I call upon my experience of following Bristol City and from the outset LM was a totally uninspired appointment and it is evident that not enough effort was put into checking him, his suitability for the job as manager of the highest profile club in the West Country or his achievements and ethos. He had a few months of relative success at MK Dons followed by a terrible slump and a few months of success at Oxford. That is it. As others have said it made LJ's record when he was given the post look greatly experienced by comparison.

Two of the trio in charge have no nous in football. They are like you and I, except they have money. Indeed, we have something they clearly don't, a grounding in following a football club and knowing what the masses think without feeling entitled.

Is it any wonder it has gone so wrong. The sooner they acknowledge they made a massive balls up of the dismissal of Pearson and foisting this emotionless novice upon our club the sooner Bristol City can get back on track. Until that happens I am afraid the Express to the Promised Land has been derailed for some considerable time to come.

Post of the season this. It was a shambles the sacking, but the replacement made it even worse.

Not renewing ST, not returning for the remainder of this season. Never felt so disillusioned with City.

Done absolutely miles better since we made this decision, haven’t we?

All those who regularly slagged him off must be mystified that he’s now a regular in a top five squad.

Thought he just “ran around” & pointed?

Top player that we have nowhere near replaced & I’m sure would have created & scored a few if we’d kept him on.

Didn't use him in his best position as a striker when we actually could do with one right now..

  12. Just had a 'Banned' Message on my profile for 5 minutes.

Admin getting annoyed at the criticism towards the club? Or are the powers that be having a word in their ear...
