OK, I have listened to it again, and accept there may have been some veiled criticism of Clarke and Westbrooke. I say 'veiled criticism', as I am not convinced he was directly criticising the two players per se, but, rather, lamenting the poor recruitment over the summer, i.e. that it was so poor he was obliged to play two fringe players in the opening game of the season - much like we were obliged to do for much of last season. This is what he actually said: "With the greatest respect to the starting XI today," Barton said. "If you had said to me at the end of last season Zain Westbrooke and Trevor Clarke were going to be in our starting XI on the opening day of the season, I would have said ‘My god, we must have had a bad summer’." Incidentally, Zain Westbrooke was signed by Ben Garner, following a successful season with Coventry. I seem to recall we were also looking at him.

If you have been watching the current tournament, you will no doubt have noticed the rather four looking French Coach, Corinne Diacre. She was Head Coach of Clermont for several years. There have been many others, mainly in Europe of course, but there was also a female coach in Scotland whose name I forget - I know you pay no attention to Scottish football, probably European neither, but you are wrong to say there have never been any female coaches of professional men’s teams.

I agree entirely and, of course, that is how it should be. It is possible, however, that LJ was presented with KP well after pre-season and friendlies had started (remember that, in fairness to LJ, he did say that he would need a full pre-season with KP) and LJ was put under pressure to play him. Obviously, I have no idea, but, for me, that is an entirely feasible explanation for SS not featuring.

Was his problem more that we later bought KP at great expense and a very large weekly salary (had him foisted upon us), such that KP had to play and there was no room for two identical players in the match day eleven?
