Excellent again along with Knight. I really like him

    I'm still mixed.

Feel both can be guilty at times of 'hiding' when we're in possession, i.e. static at times. Knighty more so, especially when on the ball - has a habit of playing head down a bit too much.

Led to a couple of times where we struggled to break the lines, especially when both at times left James isolated and Dickie and Vyner had issues finding them on the angles.

Goal output still a slight concern.

Hopefully both may improve and kick on with more games and training.

To be fair to both however, thought Conway and Weimann were poor today - latter unfortunately looks like age, lacking a yard of pace, and a lack of confidence is catching up to him.

The reality is we got rid of Bentley because he was on huge wages and a decent shot stopper, but his distribution was terrible. The thought was that Max had better distribution skills but that doesn’t seem to be the case. He’s not a bad keeper but he does have mistakes that cost goals and points (e.g. the winning goal for Ipswich) and he wouldn’t be first choice in a team vying for promotion. Just ax we would need more threat up front for that we would also need a better keeper.

I think the biggest difference is that Max would look for a quick release - people forget that Bents rarely did so, as he usually would fail to spot the run, and he'd never kick it into the channels.

Secondly, Max with the cross today and the aerial claims - whereas Bents would stay glued to his line. Its the one area of Max's game which has improved massively since becoming number one.

Love your responses, knowledge and passion but this is harsh. Our 1.2 (1.3 rounded) is this year ie year 3 of the “project”. And it does justify consideration. Haven’t checked but suspect home points per game this season is worse than the average - no club progresses without a home baseline.

Of course there were injuries/ no replacements etc but you are dismissing the fundamental issue - we simply weren’t getting the results our investment warrants.

Fwiw I didn’t want him sacked, but aside from a few games, we have been poor this season (more often than not) mostly in whole halves - see our stats about the number of times we score in both relative to others.

Disagree. What we are seeing on the pitch was a direct result of what our investment warranted.

We lost our £25m lynchpin who broke lines fanatically from deep numerous times and replaced him with (no disrespect to TGH) a £900k replacement who a divisional rival didn't mind losing.

The way we've played this season in struggling to break teams down is directly a result of NP's 'without Scott' plan being rescinded by upper management and nothing spent. Apparently the latter disagreed with further recruitment.

    Stupid but here we are.

6 out of a possible 18 points, 15th in the table, squad decimated and the managers refusal to utilise the loan and free agent market hampering us
Relationship between manager and owner not great.

Manager not the type the owners want moving forward (want a head coach who is more hands on)

It really isn’t that mind boggling a decision. He’s done his job, thanks and move on.

To hold that as a point against Nige considering the penny pinching that's gone on is outstanding.

They should have backed him after the Scott sale. We've covered the issue with loans before.

As for free agents - would take a month to get up to speed at least by which time it's almost Jan anyway. Waste of time and money. It didn't work out with Klose, not Williams, Bates, McManus, Mariappa and countless others before.

It's poor planning and negligent strategic decision making. End of story.

Same as 'moving him on' without a replacement lined up. Brum had a plan (a shite one, but a plan nonetheless) - here it's just endless bluster and no physical evidence.

But the “final say” on what?
A list drawn up by recruitment analysts.
This may or may not always include a player which the manager may have suggested/wanted.
I’m not trying to absolve LJ from blame for the performances of the team ON the field. But many put equal blame on him as they do to Ashton and the rest for the financial issues.
The financial issues will have been zero responsibility of the head coach. He’d have had final say from a list of players presented to him (some of which he may have had input to).
LJ is to blame for the football results. Ashton & Lansdown were to blame for the financials

Part of the football side was culture - he couldn't manage the bloated squad.

    Whose the options:

    Paul Simpson (Carlisle Manager)

    Keith Downing (Available post Birmingham)

    Jamie McAllister (Available post Hibs)

    John Pemberton (Available post Chesterfield)

    Tony Docherty (Dundee Manager)

    We've tried and failed with:

    Dean Holden

    Keith Millen

    Anyone else?

If it's one of these and/or Wade, I think that would be it for me.

Looks very likely that the new head coach won't have been appointed by Saturday, which is quite surprising when you consider

    a) they've already been considering Nige's replacement for over three weeks

    b) Jon said that for the first time in over 20 years of running the club they have absolute clarity on the type of head coach they want

I understand they need to be diligent, and in fairness a not outrageous period of time has passed since Nige's sacking, but you really would have thought they'd at least be very close to an appointment by now - and I'm not getting those vibes.

    Because the leadership is useless.

I was going to say I’m in utter disbelief that they sacked Pearson ( someone doing a good job ) without anyone lined up.  Then I thought actually it’s no surprise at all with the morons running this club. Atleast Birmingham had a plan. However stupid said plan was.

This is what annoys me most.

So the bulk of his successful side was in place for him like Ranieri’s was for him? Thank you

Can't tell if you're trolling, ignorant, ill informed or genuinely that stupid.

He got rid of 22 players and signed 14. In the space of 18 months with a net spend of £4-5m, removed a toxic culture, and won the League.

It was not "in place for him like Raneiri's was", the only players in the first team that won the League that were at the club under Sven before Pearson's return were Schmiechel, Konchesky, King, and Nugent. *And Wes Morgan - dating on the season overview for when he joined in my resource was wrong.

Sorry to everyone else for derailing this thread.

Go look at his net spend during the entire duration of his second spell in charge.

I’ll save you the trouble. Transfermarkt so not 100% but gives you an idea. Does it in Euros and exchange rate different then.

    11/12 season - Spent 12-15m. Sold 1-2m

    12/13 season - Spent 5-6m. Sold 1-2m

    13/14 season - Spent 500k Sold about 1m

So a bit of a myth he performed miracles there isn’t it? Keep in mind was 10-12 years ago when the record fees were for Ronaldo’s and Bales well under 100m quid. He got LJ level backing and it took 3 seasons. Like most “winners” he needed money to be successful.

Of the £15m spent in 11/12 - £12m was spent by Sven.

So net £3m spent by NP, three players were released on highly paid terms the same month in an attempt to balance the expenditure.

12/13 he sold Mills for £2m, Bamba Undisclosed (thought to be £800k), Peltier Undisclosed (thought to be £500k)

Signed de Laet, James, Vardy, Knoackaert all for £1m apiece, Wood undisclosed but suggested fee is £1m, so all told a net spend of £1.7m.

I.e. total is a net spend of circa £4.2m.

In regards to wages NP was working to reduce them in his time there, but they had high earners they couldn't shift including the likes of Gallagher, St. Ledger, Beckford, Danns, and Wellens who were all loaned out.

I'm not going to deny Leicester were not high spending, especially with regards to salaries which is still applicable. But suggesting the false context above (that NP spent the whole £15m, which he did not) diminishes what NP did to an unreasonable extent. You can ask Leicester fans how he sorted them back out in his second spell. There's a reason he's so respected there. Otherwise he'd have less respect for what he achieved similar to Parker with Fulham for example.

  11. 5 minutes ago, JoeAman08 said:

When was that? How much did he spend?

    2014.

He made a net profit of £800k that season, and the only player he signed for a fee was Riyad Mahrez.

Think they have had longer to look around as it has been obvious that NP was going, either soon or for sure at the end of the season.

There was no "we will give him time to turn it around" thinking.  (Holden !).

They at least would have been sounding people out for the Summer, the issue now maybe "fast tracking" it ?

Doesn't mean much. There shouldnt be this delay if at all deliberated and planned. Especially before playing bottom of the league is completely amateurish.

Can see this being dragged out for weeks

Unfortunately, agreed. Being pessimistic in the hope they may pleasantly surprise me for the sake of my sanity.

  13. 43 minutes ago, Zuni said:

They would have checked on Williams (or another) interest before pulling the trigger on Pearson.

I agree they were going to get rid asap but a quick phone call to confirm basic interest, details of job description and pay etc is all they would need with someone they know.

    Would they?

Only need to look at the fiasco after LJs sacking to realise that SL and planning aren't worthy of being discussed in the same sentence unless its in regards to property development.

I have zero faith the longer this bumbles along with no appointment.

If this is true?    What a let down.    A club like ours should be casting its net widely all over Europe to find a young progressive tracksuit coach, like a Farke or Frank type (Yes i know that is a cliche).....but that is exactly what this club needs?   Instead we take the easy option off of the merry go round of sacked managers.....no ambition no foresight?   If we were intending to get rid of NP, why didn't we spend a few months looking at possible replacements, vetting them, researching them, and talking to candidates?    Instead it's a case of who's out of job, and is gonna be grateful to be employed, and lets make sure he is a YES man who won't upset anyone?    It is all so very tedious IMO.

    Don't get this comparison.

Ironically think Eustaces situ at Brum reminded me very much of what NP has done here. Only have to look at what's happened since they got "the name" in, for context of the job he did.

Many of those clubs have links to the continent that led to said appointments. We have one of the most Brexit ownerships models in the league by comparison.

Would understand this view (puppet, easy option, merry-go-round) much more if it was Rowett or Dean Smith, but it isnt. Its a manager who did one very good job, his only job, at this level in mostly very challenging circumstances.

So no proven experience of getting out of this division? It bodes well that Birmingham City were gutted he left but just looks like LJ2 to me.

Would argue they were the best side I've seen this season with regards to general effectiveness and seemed very well drilled.

  16. Tinns lost any remaining respect I had for him when he said he'd have no issues going on SOTC, flunked it, and served up that drivel.

He's part of the band that snaked Nige in my eyes and I can't forgive him for that - they all need clearing out.

Would you be surprised if after all this talk of high press front foot football we do end up with him?

Dean Smith has just entered the betting as a favourite, probably one of the more palatable names on the list?

Not for me - he doesn't have a style and has done nothing of note for three years almost now.

    Eustace or riot.

so how many football clubs in the Championship make a profit?

Not many - but playing Devils advocate even in the realm of Championship expenditure, between MA and LJ, SL really fudged us.

NP dug us out and was swiftly booted.

The difference is now - there is some headroom. Why the two of them didn't give to Nige I honestly have no idea, aside from their own petty egos and ensuing disagreements with NP going forward.
