I don't remember that - before my time. But again, it's a moment that got us into the playoffs, rather than actually achieving promotion. I don't think we've ever had a definitive one-kick-of-the-ball moment in quite the same way.

Let's not kid ourselves that we've always been good enough to achieve what we wanted. As if we haven't had our share of disappointment and near misses. Did we do the business in advance against Brighton in 2004? Agree Roberts is the probably the closest, but it got us to the final, rather than actually achieving promotion, so it's not quite the same.

There is one thing I'm happy to admit I'm jealous of Rovers fans about. Twice now in two seasons, they've achieved something with effectively one kick of a football - their penalty in the play-off final last year, and their last-ditch goal yesterday. That must feel special. For all our superiority, I don't ever recall one single kick of a ball having quite such an impact for us during my lifetime (I'm 32). As a football fan you live for moments like that. Happy to be corrected though!

In anticipation of the usual bollocks, can I just point out that if there is significant coverage of this in the Post next week it doesn't mean they are biased against us. It just means that the second team in Bristol getting a second consecutive promotion is understandably more newsworthy than a meaningless Championship fixture.

To be fair, with the height of the new West Stand, we might actually be able to watch.

Chill people. They're getting promoted to a division that Burton Albion just left and we couldn't escape quick enough. Champions League it ain't.

Post bias, Radio Bristol bias, Points West bias, stadium bias towards the rugby....I've heard them all on here. Commentator bias specifically is a new one. So is there any local media organisation that likes us best?
-
Great logic. Commentator losing voice, therefore must be lifelong Rovers supporter.

Had we hovered around 17th all season and always been well clear of the relegation zone, we would probably look back on the season as a par performance. It's only because most of the wins came in the second half of the season that it's felt like a struggle; actually, when all's said and done, we're very comfortable and not really anything like relegation candidates.

Indeed. Personally I would say Villa are as likely to go down again as they are to go back up next season; a mid table finish is therefore the most likely outcome.

I accept Villa are the bigger club, but they remain a club in turmoil. No manager, half a board, and an owner trying to sell. They have absolutely no direction at all and appear in permanent decline right now. By contrast we now have a very stable set up; a wealthy and committed owner, a new stadium just finished, and we've had a strong finish to the season. Our overall league position has improved for three seasons in a row. I don't think it is anywhere near certain that Villa will be back in the Premier League before us. Just look at Leeds; being a big club doesn't guarantee anything.
