  1. Well , apart from the obvious, that was pretty glorious to watch wasn't it. As I said, that was my first derby game and it hadn't dawned on me until I heard Roger Malone mention it in the commentary, that it was the first one for a decade, I guess there must have been quite some build up to the match , but as a 10 or 11 year old at the time , I don't have much recollection of that. It also reminded me that I did see Dick Sheppard play for us, albeit just that one game -does anyone know why his return was a one off? I could still easily name both teams regular line ups from that era, I'd struggle to name or recognise many players from both sides from the past 10-15 years. I did have the pleasure of going on the piss with Tom Ritchie in hospitality at Rovers last season, who really was a great guy and he seemed quite touched that so many Rovers fans still recognised him and gave him a very warm welcome in the bars around the ground. At the risk of sounding like an old fart, it's worth noting that in the current era we would have almost certainly had a penalty for Collier's handball and Cheesley would have seen a red card for his reaction to Frankie Prince's challenge. What with the 4th goal coming from a huge punt downfield from Cashley, Joey Barton would have been apoplectic! I seem to remember that Cheesley was considered a bit of an unfit Norwich reject at the time, does anyone else remember that being the case? It could of course just been abuse from the North Enclosure that day that stuck in my young brain.
  2. I have absolutely no idea why I remember shit like this, but I'm pretty sure the game was Good Friday and not Easter Monday. I was at the game and I'm pretty sure at 26K it must be the biggest home crowd I have ever seen Rovers play in front of. The 4-1 you mention was actually my first ever derby, I think Gordon Fearnley put us 1 up in a strong wind and it was one way traffic in the second half. Pedantic Gas
  3. Some of our potential season ticket holders had trouble with Ticketmaster and were in effect 'locked out' . Out true STH base would be closer to 15,000
  4. If it was just a rumour, I unreservedly apologise. My memory isn't what it was, but I thought I remembered him being charged.
  5. Maybe it's just my City mates then. I was pretty friendly with Mark , AKA 'Divvy' although I never called him that in my life, and he certainly used to use the term and I have seen 'CAF' on tee shirts . Possibly it was something he said and others picked up on it? Anyway, it's a good expression
  6. He hasn't taken a hiatus, he is done with the club, his choice obviously- would you do the same?
  7. I don't support any one man at the club now or who has ever been at the club. I support Bristol Rovers and I always will. There may possibly come a time I no longer attend matches- although I doubt that- but I could never describe myself as an 'ex-supporter', it kinda goes against everything about what being a fan of any club is. City fans have the expression 'City as ****' and I totally get it, I suspect you don't or ever will.
  8. Glen Humphries? The sad fact is that society is littered with people who have a propensity towards violence. I suspect every team has had such a player, we just didn't always get to hear about it.
  9. He's a slimy ****** isn't he? I didn't really take any notice of him when he was with you, gutted really, such an easy man to dislike and his time with you passed me by!
  10. And another thing, what's with the reinvention of Manchester City as 'City' I have heard two Bristolians call Man City ,'City' in the past week, I was genuinely confused when the first asked me if I was going to watch the City game in the pub. I'll allow Mancunians to refer to their teams as City and United, but if you ain't from there, and especially if you're from Bristol, you can **** right off!
  11. Jesus, how hyped up were those commentators and pundits and what was all that bollocks before hand? Turn the sound systems down, let the fans sing and let the players play.
  12. Meh, Bristol is okay. Has it's faults of course, just like everywhere, but I'm bemused how many people continue to slag off, what is a very, very nice place to live. maybe you should move back and see just how cool it is
  13. I used to sit next to him regularly at Twerton Park of all places. He was writing for the Sunday Independent then, really nice bloke. I remember talking to him about the rivalry between our clubs but apparently it was very different when he was playing. Obviously they always wanted to beat each other, but always wanted the other team to do well when they weren't playing each other and he enjoyed covering the Rovers games. I can't remember if he covered City as well?
  14. Celtic have been delightful to watch under Ange, on the front foot for the entire game and normally come out with the win. He has implemented this style wherever he has managed and has always had success. Gutted to see him go. Will he be given the time at Spurs to implement his style and whether it would work in England are both valid points though. I was at the Real Madrid game earlier in the season. Celtic took the game to them, missed several chances, it looked like men against boys for 60 minutes. Then Real scored 3 in 15 minutes .
  15. They are saying they want an employee rather than to contract the work out. I mean, of all the thigs you could easily take the piss out of us for, that we want to employ a general maintenance man is an odd thing to go for
  16. I did get to Firhill a few years back, slightly odd ground with the 'missing end' but I enjoyed it all the same. One of my old bosses was a fan, he used to remind me of the 1971 League Cup Final on a regular basis! I was convinced they would do for Ross and it was a heartbreaking end to the season for them. Lets hope they do it next time.
  17. That's him! Send him my love and remind him just how good Celtic are at the moment
  18. Great to watch, gut wrenching for the Partick Thistle fans, I think there was a guy on OTIB who used to follow them, I cant remember the name, but we had a few spats over my support for Celtic. I love Scottish football, lots condemn it as 'pub league' stuff, but ffs, a good game is a good game and over the years I have often enjoyed games more in a local park than I have at Wembley. I have been to a fair few Scottish grounds and managed to tick off Ross and ICT a few years back while holidaying on the Black Isle.
  19. Well there's a text book bit of made up transfer talk journalism if ever there was some
  20. I also used to business with the company that put the signs up, the owners were City season ticket holders. For a number of years they got away with putting in a sign for their own company in a very prominent position without paying for it. They got rumbled eventually
  21. If he did have any, he never told me. Feary was City through and through and would have done anything he could to help the club. He was offered a place on the board at one time and I know he found it really tough turning it down, but with the existing commitments he had, he wouldn't be able to give his all to the role.
  22. That may have been the game we played there after the original match was called off around 1/2 hour before kick off. I went on one of the 3 supporters coach for the rearranged game, which managed to crash into each other on the M5. Believe it or not, we got ourselves off the motorway and flagged down a coach to see if he could help us. One well known rovers fand 'happened' to have a large amount of cash on him and got us a coach and 2 buses to take us the rest of the way. there was another crash on the M6 and we didn't get to Springfield park until half time and they initially refused to let us in. |they relented and we, obviously, got dicked 3-0 or 3-1. Anyway, that's my excuse for them not opening the grass bank because not enough of us were there
  23. The company I worked for at the time supplied the lights. Dave Fear - who installed them- was at the game and had to get his hands dirty trying to get them on again
  24. There were a few residents who used to go in there, Denis and Steve the punk I particularly remember. I used to go there from around 1981 to 1990.
