  1. A very dependable defender who I feel was underrated by many City fans. Possibly because he didn't have as much pace as others but his reading of games was superb. RIP Gordon with our thanks
  2. When I was travelling the country in my work, when football became the days topic, most people I dealt with asked if I supported Bristol Rovers! That's how much we are thought of.
  3. I don't want to take over this thread but some have interpreted my comment about thinking of late wife every day as a negative. I remember the good times, holidays, birthdays much more than the bad times. For instance current wife and I will be discussing future holidays and she'll ask if I've been to a particular place, let's say Munich. Yes I have and then tell her about shopping there and how much was spent by first wife. Oh great is the reply let's go there and I can get some new and expensive clothes! We both have times in our life when shit happened: two of her long term partners, one the father of her daughter, died within a week of each other. We both lift each up to look forward. Next holiday in a week's time is Severn Beach!
  4. It's now 25 years past. I realised when she died that life is a once only event on this planet. Thus one can spend their time looking backward for ever or leave the past where it is and looking forward. That was how my father dealt with the death of his first wife during childbirth. He never forgot the past but did not let himself be dragged down by it. He always planned forward looking, like holidays, away match trips and planning his garden vegetables. Even when he was immobile in his last few years, the first question when I visited was "what are you doing this coming weekend" or "are you going to watch City tomorrow". He knew the answer to that. My first marriage lasted 29 years and my second one has now been trundling along for 22 more. We both know each others past but it's the future that is more important. Live it while you can because there's no second chance.
  5. Thank you for having the courage to tell us that. My wife did the the same 25 years ago and you're probably like me in that there isn't a day goes by without thinking of her. @Chessels Chick
  6. Sir Alex will miss her after nearly sixty years of marriage. She must have been the rock that he clung to during the hard times which everyone has in the lifetimes. RIP Cathy.
  7. We, the fans, in various levels of belief and disbelief, think that we can ever get back to the top league. In the last ten to fifteen years, we have shown some promise but ultimately we fade away from achieving the big prize for a variety of reasons.
  8. You and brother are both correct. Defensively we are ok in getting the ball but unable to play ourselves out from defence if the other side presses us. And in midfield we have hard workers but not the top quality "Tin Opener" that creates the chances for the striking department.
  9. One hundred more idiots? Do we know if any of our previous gang have been promoted to heaven or more likely relegated to hell? Are the newcomers previousl gasheads who have finally come to their senses? Welcome everyone. A large sense of humour is needed when posting and when reading some of the replies.
  10. Going back a very long time, in 1954, we signed the Leeds captain Tommy Burden. He had got a job in Clarks Shoes and wanted to play part time near Street. A superb midfielder who captained City in his later career and gave us about eight years of quality before retirement. So, for me, he has to be in the eleven.
  11. I can remember seeing Andy King playing for Leicester against City around 2011/2013 and thinking "If we could sign him, we'd be a much better team". Ten or twelve years on, the legs aren't what they were but if he could last ninety five minutes twice a week, he would be first on the team sheet for every match. A consummate professional who, along with a couple of other senior squad members, has done a lot to get the team spirit we are now seeing and which was totally absent when they arrived.
  12. If tonight is anything to go by, we'll only need to play him for a maximum of twenty minutes per game! What a gem.
  13. And the rest of his playing colleagues were also losers. They, certainly, knew that to keep Scott in our team would increase win bonuses, results and possible promotion. All attention and rewards were not limited to him alone. The squad would get bigger scraps of glory and cash.
  14. In the 1963 big freeze from Boxing day to end of March, I was working in London through February. So I went to see as many games there as possible. I saw Bolton at Highbury, lose 2-3 to Arsenal, with an 18 year old Francis Lee. Pitch frozen solid so hardly good for quality football but I at least saw a very good player. PS. Snow was still piled up just outside of the pitch and young boys at the front of terrace, were throwing snowballs at the coppers and then facing the return snowballs from the police. Couldn't happen now as the boys would be called delinquents and the police would be charged with grievous bodily harm!
  15. How come the Leicester scorer of their second goal was able to push over the marking City defender before heading into the net? Higher quality of cheating in the Women's Prem just like the men.
  16. I knew you would disagree but for at least the last four seasons, I consider that we struggle to defend any lead with confidence.
  17. The trouble is that these isolated errors happen too frequently. Our home form is so erratic that it's expected by many that we cannot hold on to a lead. Several around me, and myself included, were saying that they thought we would not defend the 2-0 lead for the next 80 minutes. And do it proved correct.
  18. He is a decent player for making defence splitting passes from midfield. Problem if he plays there is that we do not attack through the middle - everything goes via the wings for crosses. In the back four, he is too slow to react quickly and is prone to making passes that are defence splitting but through our defence! I acknowledge that he has a lot of experience and he's a decent player but if he is as good as some are saying, why did Luton do nothing to keep him for their successful push to the Prem?
  19. No. Typical City who for for most of my life have been able to snatch a defeat from the jaws of victory.
  20. Why was that a shock result? So we've won the last five games at Stoke. Yet they have now won four and drawn one out of the last six at Ashton Gate. Oh well, goodbye to us being in the top six, if we lose games like that. Talk about inconsistent and unable to convert our chances and to shut out the away team.
  21. At least 9 out of ten are not valid goals because the non penalty takers had encroached into the penalty area before the initial kick was made. Very surprised that the referees allowed them.
  22. When eevhave Whilst I understand your thoughts, I can't agree with them. Football mirrors our lives. If we had all been happy when we've done/achieved what we set out as youngsters, then what is life worth in later life. Whether a worm or a lion, this life is the only one we get; it's not a rehearsal for a second or third time. I'm now eighty and while I don't yearn to go trekking through mountains, I still want to achieve on the physical side. And learning new languages, new skills. I love City and want to go til the day I drop whether we're in the top or bottom tier but to see us back among the big clubs would be wonderful.
