Not sure how you’d police this suggestion, what’s to stop ‘match fixing’ by someone who isn’t a fan of a club attending, abusing and the the match is forfeit.  Seems to be an easy way to nobble a rival.

He is a hypocrite as he supports countries where males rule and women are third class citizens. And countries where anyone who is other than straight (is that correct?) is punished or treated badly.

I'm sorry if I don't know all the latest terms and names for those who differ from the majority.

Under NP especially, was there any indication we would or should be returning to a back 3?

Not sure if it is the best course of action..by all means in-game switches especially with Naismith able to either drop or slot into the deepest point between midfield and defence but that aside Idk.

We spent the best part of a year going 4-3-3 or some version of this, possibly recruiting for that too.

Will Naismith stay here? Is he one the LM will want to play?

I suspect he'll be on his way in summer.

    So poor!

other than cup games our home support and atmosphere is guff.

need to sort out the stadium for a start but 20k today should have been much louder.

While we continue to play second halves, sideways and backwards all the time allowing away teams to keep us pinned in our own half at the Atyeo away fans end, leaving the City fans in the rest of the ground with absolutely nothing to get excited about, the atmosphere will be dead!

Naturally I was very impressed with Twine.
Lots of comments about his set pieces, which of course will generally be bang on the money.
But plenty of people saying they thought his ‘general’ play was lacking.
Not sure what you guys were watching to be honest.
What I saw was the first time we’ve had a player in bloody years who can find the central spaces behind the striker, receive the ball facing his own goal (which enables the CB’s and CM’s to find a forward pass), control that ball and turn, and make another forward pass.
It’s how we break the lines and it’s how we’ve always said LM wants to play - but we were always missing that number 10.

If people don’t think his general play was that good then they just have missed that dozen times he dropped into the hole and enabled us to pass it out.

His strength will come when we have the patterns that will see the wide players making the third man runs once the ball goes into Twine. Because he will be able to turn and feed the ball forward.
Sometimes he doesn’t even need to turn - 2nd half he came short for a ball from Dickie, had a man up his backside, but managed to flick a first time pass round the corner straight to Conways feet in the centre circle.
We’ve not had this type of vision and execution from anyone for a long time - someone offering an option for a pass out from the back AND being able to control it and continue to play forwards.

Yes, some of the passes he attempts will not come off. But that’s what a creative player has to do. They have to attempt the ball that might only come of 3 times out of 10. That’s what coaches call “being brave with the ball”. It’s taking the opportunity/responsibility to try the difficult things. We will definitely have that with Twine. He will try things. They won’t always come off, but when they do we will find ourselves in good attacking positions. And once we get those runners outside him, I can’t wait!!

@Harry But we need our defence and midfield to mix up the passes they provide. It's all very well to keep going across the back 3/4 and then to the touchlines, left and right, or back to the defence, from whence it came. We must also mix this up with passing forward in the middle of the field and opening opponents defences with a more direct route.

Every time our midfield passes the ball back to defence is, at present, an opportunity wasted.

  5. All this talk about footballers mental attitudes. It's exactly the same in the outside world where some people have strong feelings, determined to succeed at everything they do and others who are content to drift along without any effort to change themselves.

The former ones get to managerial posts whether they are suited or not.

The latter end up sweeping the floor very badly.

I can't speak Welsh but know pronunciation from my grandparents. And singing the anthem when Cymru slaughter England especially in rugby, is like seventh heaven. Only City going to the Prem can beat that?

Not denying that but we are a poor attacking outfit and we desperately need some quality in final third. Twine is a good addition but we don’t have enough X Factor. Need it now.

But this is building for the future and nothing to do with what we could do with now.

It was shut for about a week, shut when we came back from West Ham for sure. But it was open when we got back from Preston on Saturday. And no, I haven't been in there for years.

I'm proud to say that I've never been inside, even for a pee.

I guess that all depends on what you want in a winger within, dare I say it, a “front foot” style. Jeez - can’t believe I bloody said that!!! I’m gonna be hounded now!!

What I mean is that there are two different types of winger.
1 type of winger is the one which runs up to the opposition full back, checks his run, turns, and passes backwards to his own full back.
The 2nd type of winger is the one which doesn’t check backwards every time, he’s the one who tries things, attempts to beat the man (take him on 🎶).

Winger number 2 will lose the ball a helluva lot more often than winger number 1. But it’s Winger number 1 which I find more frustrating and my preference will always be for a winger number 2 type.

My memory of Junior Bent for example was that he pretty much always checked back and passed backwards. When the whole crowd were screaming for him to beat the man (take him on 🎶).

I’m happy with Mehmeti trying to run his man and try to beat him. He still has a lot of learning to do with his decision making as to when to play the pass, but he’s a winger who can potentially excite with his direct running.

I remember Peter Doherty at an AGM in 1958, said that he tells his wingers, Hinshelwood and Watkins to try to go past their opposing full back every time they had the ball.

He said that he wants them to do that as the one occasion they get past the full back, is when we get the winning goal.

How the game has changed because the norm is now to play the ball backwards toward our own goal. I prefer the old, out of date way as it creates goalmouth excitement

I do believe that after many years we’ve found our new Gerry Gow !!! Starting to remind me so much of our legendary scrapper !!

And also showing us why we recruited him from Wigan to dominate the defensive and ball winning midfield. Any player in that position is prone to red/yellow cards as a split second mistiming can often happen.

From Ginger Peacock, Gerry Gow, Tommy Doherty we need a like midfielder to go places we haven't been for a very long time.

No no;  a reincarnation of personages such as...Thresher / Kellard / Gow

Now they were hard men. Mike Sumerbee who could look after himself on a football pitch, was battered by the Threshing Machine and still came back for more.

  12. He is a professional commentator so will be as neutral as he can be!

The only TV commentator to just refer to us throughout the match as CITY and highly likely to scream very loudly if we score and even louder should we win. Just like Gary Owers on Radio Bristle.

    Enjoy the match Jonathan.

I very much agree with your post.

Manning's repetitive soundbite bag of coaching phrases, are just jumbled up and churned out on a regular basis. It's not well thought out, considered and often irrelevant.

I've worked with people like this who use corporate phrasing to cover up inadequacies...to make themselves sound like they know what they are talking about.

I'm getting LJ and MA type feelings from Manning...no wonder JL likes him, just his sort imo.

I've said from day one, he'll get away with it when results and performances are good, but when not.....

I really do think the club have bollocked up with this appointment.

    Doesn't fit with our personnel.

No chance he'll do better with this squad than Nige, as expected by the board in their wisdom.

And with the likes of experienced professionals like Wells, Weimann, James and King moving on or ' sideways'....then who are you going to replace all of that leadership and experience with in one go?

    It doesn't look great imo.

Gary Owners hit the nail perfectly on the head yesterday after the match.

Preston manager made three changes at half time that completely changed the match. They went to a three attackers and started to control the match.

Manning waited until 75 minutes to make any alterations. By then we're one goal down and PNE in charge.

Managing a football team is totally different to coaching. The coach helps players technical ability.

The manager is the one who controls the tactics and personnel!

Any number of rugby and basketball fans could be Hammers or simply buy up and sell.

Some toff rocks up to the Dolman in full Bobby More outfit and has a hissy fit when knocked back 😁

Seriously though, if it never occurred to the club that you dont have to be a city fan to follow the rugby and basketball teams then there are even more ******** in BS than I thought !

I believe that many City fans/ST holders forget that there are plenty of us, City fans, who support the Bears and vice versa.

I have ST's for both and my near neighbours at Bears games are interested in how City are doing especially when we are both playing at the same time. I don't know how many City are ST holders for Bears and vice versa but from figures about five years ago, I suspect at least 1,000 and maybe more. Bristolians who enjoy supporting both.

£4M is daft money. There has to be better value than that available.

We're not going up or down this season so it might be prudent to wait until the summer rather than rush into a deal this month.

If the price is £4m, I agree that we should not spend that.

However, I consider that we should recruit two or three now as the sixth spot in the final table appears to be wide open for one of about six or seven clubs.

So well worth getting the additional squad members in now and giving it a good go for sixth. Even if we miss it by a couple of points, it will have brought real confidence and consistency to the squad.

Maybe I’m being harsh here but I hope he’s not putting out performances like this because he knows there might be a contract around the corner…

My guess would be that he has only now fully recovered his full match fitness after two/three years of injuries.

Its a simple wall pass from Knight to Williams, and Tommy is on the move as soon as Joe strikes it. The run and execution from Conway is superb. Love to see more goals like that.

This goal highlights the fact that we are usually trying to attack via the wings without a big striker.

We are not using the pace of our main striker.

A subtle change in tactics in future?

Came across this photo in the depths of my PC.

Now that was training, good fun as well.

Atyeo pulling, riding Hinshelwood, Thresher and Watkins.

Well I started this thread because of a chance hearing of the Brighton goal scorer in a recent match with the name of Hinshelwood.

And now to see this photo of City players who I watched and admired has brought tears to my eyes. I watched them playing for City but also knew them on trains home after away matches and when some of them were playing cricket at our local playing fields in the summer. All of them were willing to give us some time with conversation and jokes. They belonged to us and we belonged to them and Bristol City. I never dreamt then as a teenager that I would still remember them as if it was yesterday. How anyone who has supported a team can change to another one is beyond belief. City forever.
