Would not be a big surprise being outbid by Ipswich. Presume we have been working on other targets. If true  though still a bitter pill to swallow that Ashton gets one of our targets.

I've seen this pop up a few times. Is it really? They are likely to be shopping in the same sort of market. It's just one of those things. I couldn't care less if it's to Ipswich. I'm more gutted if true because I think he'd be a great addition however as one door closes another one opens.

He was injured for a lot of it, and then struggled to break into one of the best teams the Championship's seen.

    That's how.

Can you not see the irony in your own reply. That's why they are saying..how can you say he's better when he's never actually played at this level yet. Whether or not he's had the opportunity based on injury or opportunity makes no difference.

Is Pring in the same position as Vyner? Less than one good steady form, so needs another one this season before an increase?

I'd say so. All players need to be treated the same way. That being said we have an extra year security with Pring to demonstrate exactly that.

I’ve said this on a couple of threads - I think he’s going this summer.

For as good as Zak was last season he was above his prior standards, and was on his way out the summer before. We will have (when all fit) McCrorie, Atkinson, Dickie, Naismith and offered to Kalas. Add Pring/Roberts and that’s 7 CB options without Zak. It’s clear to me we’re planning without him, and I stand by that he should only be given a contract reflective of what Nige thinks his worth is to the team over the next 3 years.

If Kalas accepts, I think Vyner leaves. Even if he doesn’t I’m not convinced he stays.

Completely agree, I've had that same feeling. Weve already sorted out a contingency plan of sorts and may go back into the market if he is moved on and Kalas doesn't resign. I also think we should stick to the contract we've deemed good enough to offer based on his last few years not just the upturn in his form last season. Nigel has said we won't be offering bumper wages just off one good decent and I agree.

Offered a contract previously which was rejected. Awaiting new talks with the player. With our new policy of selling players proactively I can see him going this window unless we just get really bad offers it may be better to keep for a year. Previously Nigel wants players out if the don't want to commit however.

Even with my red tinted specs off…..he has two mates and international pals here. He’s trained at HPC and said how great the facilities were. Will have no doubt spent time in the city too. Would say our wages would be pretty comparable to Ipswich, and we are far less of a risk than them too.

If he’s highly driven by money only, then yeah he will probably ‘choose’ Ipswich as we all know what Smokey joe is going to throw at him as their USP. Certainly doesn’t strike me as the type though.

Plus they have 8 centre midfielders already for next season.. who knows we'll find out in due course.

I’m going to stick my neck out and say we’re not signing him. If Ipswich are involved, they will pay what it takes to get him and we won’t be drawn into a bidding war. Move on me thinks

Chill out Alan Sugar, it's just media speculation right now. I'm sure if it goes over what we're willing to pay we'll move on to the next target.

Given that Derby have decided to leak the offer info, wouldn't our normal stance be to walk away out of principle? Or have we walked away, and Derby are trying to signpost what offers are acceptable?

Where have you got this from? We knew a week ago we'd bid 1.5 million from an online forum. I'm sure its common knowledge in football circles.

And look at what Newcastle have on the other side of their defence? The most creative full back in the league other than TAA.

If Pring gets injured we don't have much attacking threat from full back. I watch a lot of Scottish football as I also take an interest in a Scottish team.

Look at Burnley last season with Maatsen/Roberts, both brilliant going forwards. Blades played with wing backs, same for Luton, but Boro again Giles and Smith both brilliant attacking full backs.

It's not oversimplifying it, nor is it saying they have to be "marauding full backs" - just good going forwards.

You've preemptively answered what I was going to say. We also have Pring who does exactly that at our level. We now have Roberts as back up who may also have the ability to do that 'if that's what Nigel needs' as we just don't know. What I do know is that Tins and Nige know how they want to play and have or are identifying players that play the system they want.

Not all teams are going to play this system your referring to with marauding fullbacks and that specific skillset. There isn't just one way to be successful.

Again I think your oversimplifing the matter. Its all about balance in the team.

In the modern game the best sides in any league have full backs that attack like Pring or Bryan do.

I worry if Tanner, McCrorie and Roberts are 3 of our 4 full back choices to be honest.

Think your oversimplifing 'best teams' and how they operate. It all depends on style of play. I know some successful teams go for the high press but not all have marauding fullbacks or wingbacks i.e Dan Burn at Newcastle. Also how do you know McCrorie can't do that?

  11. Bit of a shame as he was the sought after player from the efl last year and we never got to properly see him in action.

However we've done the right thing and cashed in whilst he has some value especially if NP can't see him breaking into the team. Least were being proactive with moving players on rather than letting them stagnate and going for free. Also potentially we may have a sell on if he does well and moves on for decent money.

I dunno, seems quite a lot for someone who has 12 months left on his contract? Can't see many other teams wanting to pay £47m for him?

Not sure, wouldn't be surprised if a Prem team had bid 40/45 already for him. He's been a good player for 3/4 seasons consistently and still at a decent age. Same with the fees quoted for Maddison.

Bearing in mind Nigel Pearson said the reason we’d offered him a contract was to get compo, notwithstanding my understanding of the 2 compo scheme rules, then I’d suggest this is wrong.

Your bang on imo. Think they've not understood the process and reinterpreted Romano's tweet.

Romano is pretty much always correct. Burnley, Freiburg and Monaco looking at him…maybe he is good after all!

Course he's a good player, he's 21 but already played 100 games in the Championship and half a season in Ligue 1.

Yet his mind has been elsewhere for a long while. Shame but we move on!

I've had a little read through the thread on Knight in the Derby forum.

In fairness, the City fan posting on there seems to be acting pretty reasonably (as are almost all the Derby fans). It's just 1 or 2 Derby fans throwing a bit of a tantrum over the realisation that Derby aren't exactly the most attractive club in the EFL right now.

Some posters are getting over sensitive on their end however it is a weird thing to do.

That supposed city fan posting on Derbys forum is getting his information from OTIB but posting on their forum straight away however he hasn't posted here in 10 years apparently. Does come across like he is being smug if I'm honest. If he wanted to discuss the player that's fine but we have a 5 page topic discussing in detail exactly that.

Not tonnes of detail….but Sunderland’s recent signing Triantis is one such example of the Exceptions Panel being more relaxed.

So this explains it. Knew this was in the offing but didn't think it would come into place so quickly.

Thanks I was completely baffled by Sunderlands recent signings. Great now I can waste hours looking at obscure leagues for hidden gems that I think we should sign but won't sign.

If the deal doesn't happen then it's a tad disappointing but we move on to the next target. With little money around throughout the EFL we are fishing in a large pool and we won't always land our main catch. I am OK with the signings so far which add depth to our squad while being made within our means. I am sure more will follow but we have to accept that post COVID, and with FFP to consider, we are not in the market for marquee signings. How good our signings will be won't be known until they put on a red shirt and play for us in the Championship.

I agree, potentially Derby have offered more money or a promise of more playing time. If he goes there instead I'm glad were sticking to our guns and not offering more wages or promises to the player just to get him to sign. Were very early in the window so plenty of times to access other options.
