    Now there’s a title for a thread!

Heres a couple of interesting tables showing xG. When we’re ahead we are more likely to concede “better quality” chances (either individually or volume of chances) than have those chances ourselves - and we are one of the worst teams in the division on that metric. That suggests we may have an issue “managing” games out when in the lead.

We do have a better ability to create higher xG than opponents when we are behind, but interestingly it’s not markedly different from opponents - and we also have a better xG when ahead. That suggests a weakness in breaking teams down once they set up against us to protect a lead.

The other things that are interesting is just look at the top sides numbers when ahead - Leicester and Leeds numbers of capitalising when ahead are huge! And Ipswich when behind - they tend to concede early when they do, but this evidences the ability to come back.

Normal disclaimer: I hate xG as a measure of individual chances but as a collective data point, I do think it’s useful.

Think this is the issue. I see this not only when we score. We also struggle to cope initially after the restart from half time. I sort of dread that 5/10 minutes post goal or half time.

    Other way around for me.

Yeah fair. I guess as others have discussed it's whether you'd want pace and power vs technique and control in the final third. I think I could see both playing in either position and compliment each other fine.

  3. I'm really looking forward to seeing how we get on tomorrow. It's a different challenge and this will change how we set up. We need to be on it regardless.

It's probably the first game I'm actually stumped on what my line up would be i.e First with the return of Twine and Sykes, Cornick having positive impacts recently, Mehmeti showing more what he can do, Bell ect. Even the Tanner/McCrorie competition. Midfield has plenty of options I'd be more than happy with. I even want to see more of Dire too. I'd say its only the centre backs that are guaranteed and that's not a bad thing.

I know after a couple of wins things always look better but credit where credits due I really like the look of the squad right now and I think we've recruited really and I think there is much more to come.

Hopefully we can kick on tomorrow and put in a good performance to build on and get some consistency.

  4. Can't believe the negative comments about attitude because a professional footballer wants to go play games and doesn't just want to wait for city to provide those games. He clearly saw the form Prings been in and after missing time with injury wanted to play in anyway possible.

Seems like a driven player and that's exactly what we need at this club. Just because he didn't say the typical 'loved every minute of it here so far' and all the typical footballer responses doesn't mean he doesn't care. I actually prefer his honesty it's quite refreshing.

I remember watching clips before he joined and could see the quality he has. Was really optimistic on his progress this season. I'm happy he's getting his chance to shine. It will be a difficult time with Prings return. Perhaps as others have said maybe Roberts LB and Pring LM would be a good option in a 442 for some games.

Ooh Betty..the cat’s just shat out the worst post ever made.

Come off it now. It's not that bad.

Posters say more petty stuff on here daily. He's had about 20 replies where he's been called a ****, bell end ect and even calling for a ban!

Many of those replies haven't even contributed to what the OP has said i.e credit to Manning.

    Let's move past this now.

    Christ.

How long is a typical hamstring injury?? It has been almost a year recurring.

Depends on how severe it is. Weeks or months. However, even if it is a strain I think due to the amount of injuries he's had I'd be surprised he makes any first team minutes this season.

But it's also likely they we'll get another injury or two, so maybe a net gain in numbers available but I don't think we should assume that we'll get a sustained period of 100% squad availability.

I do get that. Just can't really remember a time we have had this availability. Will be strange leaving senior players out of the match day squad.

At our worst this season we had a bench with two GKs Thomas and Bajic, Nelson, Joseph James, Idehen, Knight-Lebel, Backwell and Yeboah.

A back 3/5 leaves us penned in though. I appreciate it maybe the case anyway.

We played alright up there in November, with the correct shape. Albeit Southampton will have grown and risen since then, as their unbeaten run and momentum has continued.

Most other teams I would completely agree but we've got to make the lack of possession work for us in my opinion. They are so strong down the wings and if we keep a back 4 we may score but I just think they'll score 3 or 4.

  9. They've not lost since September. We will be parked in our half for most of the game. Can see us going to a back 3/5.

Think we need as many big lads as possible to play for set pieces.

Shame we don't have Atkinson and Twine fit. Wouldn't mind seeing Cornick in the team to set up for a counter.

You're the one posting that fans must be happy about communication because of attendances.

As the season looks like it's just going to fade out I will be voting with my feet.

OK let's start with BT and JL coming out and explaining why we are having another rebuild and their thoughts on their stated targets not being met.

We'll see if you do. I'm not convinced.

Also why would they have they have a recap of a season that is mid way through?

  11. 8 minutes ago, W-S-M Seagull said:

Do you work for the club by any chance?

I say that because this is the exact attitude the club have. "Attendances are good so fans must be happy"

I don't know what planet you have been living on but the majority of us consider communication to be at an all time low and the sane for the relationship between the club and our fans.

Haha that old chestnut.. you must work for BS. You really do have a repeat switch.

Sorry I forgot your working hard constantly on here to hold the club to account aren't you? You don't attend fan meetings, you don't vote with your feet but your posting on here. How's that going?

Can you be more specific on what information you are lacking currently from the club asides from half time tactics?

To suggest a championship manager is watching opposition managers interviews to understand their tactics, is...well...silly.

All they have to do is watch the game, analyse the stats and learn all they need to.

Glad to have input from an actual Championship manager like you to clarify for me.

I assume you are suggesting because we have high attendances we’re all happy with the clubs communication . I don’t see that the two are necessarily linked, in fact, but maybe if suggests the opposite, because there are lots of us, as a club we need to ensure our communication is better.

I'm suggesting people moan a huge amount on social media or on here. Even say they won't be renewing season tickets ect but ironically our footfall seems to increase regardless. Seems like people aren't voting with their feet and supposedly holding the hierarchy to account.

And that's where Manning needs to improve his communication skills.

He's the Head coach of a fanbase of around 40-50k he needs to find the balance of informing the fanbase whilst also keeping the trade secrets.

I don't want to know all his in depth tactical plans, but I do want to know the basics as to why our best performing player was taken off.

If he wants to keep things close to his chest then cool but then that doesnt improve relations between the club and its support which has been a huge issue this season.

Yes it's clearly been a huge issue:

But that's what I mean, because of the  lack of clarity he gives it leaves people such as yourself to try and fill in the gaps and speculate.

Many other managers speak about why they made changes etc. Clubs have army's of analysts so he wouldn't be given much away to the opposition.

Yes we're speculating on a fan forum that's what it was set up for. You don't need clarity, you want clarity as a fan. Like I said it's a modern day fans need for information to the nth degree. Thankfully he's not providing all details of why we did x or y in the last game because there is a strong likelihood we may need to do it again.

Regardless of analysts they won't know everything and things need to be hidden. If not we might aswell post the line up, formation, planned subs 24 hours before.

I think Liam needs to work on his communication. He answers questions in a way where the questions don't really get answered and then thats why we're then all left trying to figure out why he made certain decisions.

I think your just showing the over expectations of a modern day fan.

Does he really need to explain his tactics in full detail post match? Perhaps he'd prefer to keep that to himself. It might be in our interests not to share everything with our next potential opponents. Especially considering we have Southampton in a very quick turnaround i.e same context as Middlesbrough. We won't have much time to recover, we won't have the lions share of possession.

When you see a forward looking around to see if he has actually scored, I think that suggests an element of luck.

Yeah I'm not saying there wasn't an element of luck for the goal specifically but as a whole when pressure is applied for a long period it's more likely one will end going in whether deflected or not. That being said the players defended very well second half especially given the context of the schedule they've played already.

  18. I think it's also partially needs must with managing game time. With different personnel you can't always keep the same shape i.e McCrorie coming on for Bell. Who else was the option.. Mebude? That would of been more risky.

I wouldn't say their goal was lucky as the pressure they applied beforehand was sustained and a goal felt like it was coming.

That works both ways. A number of posters who were nowhere to be seen after three points in six league games (which is a really poor return whether we like it or not) now appear, stir the pot and throw their weight around against other posters. I assume we’ve got this adult scenario on here for another couple of years……..

I does work both ways but It doesn't with me. I post rain or shine so I feel like I can state what I see. Someone who wallows in this clubs pity at any opportunity and weirdly never wants to engage when there's a positive result.
