David icke said he was in a petrol station late at night, and a craft landed, a being gets out, and emptys the petrol pump, into the craft, the attendant comes running out waving his arms around and shouts thats 14ks worth of fuel, can you pay? The alien assures him he can, then he emptys another pump, 7ks worth this time, he then calmly walks in the station and says, got change of a 30000 zooyianilandi note?

First heard that joke in the early 80s but no David Icke and it involved the alien going into a pub. He used a different currency  called a Zonk. Maybe there are 2 aliens out there!

Who thinks we can finish top two ?

    OK then....

    I do.

Ever since our glory days up to 1980, I have looked forward to the start of a new season. Like so many, I have thought that we'd be going up but knew some of that was based on wishful, loyal thinking.

However, this close season has been different. We finished well and have bought wisely.

NP has a backroom staff he wants. There seems to be a genuine bond of trust between players.

If Bournemouth can get to the Premier League not once but twice and Luton Town can haul themselves out of the National League to the top tier, then I have every right to believe we can. I just think this is the season for us to do it....

And please, nobody is allowed to remind me of this post until after the 10th game at least!

Both teams have been ignored so far so they might take the opportunity to kill 2 birds…

That's why I have booked a Friday flight and a late Sunday return.

The cost of following BCFC isn't a nice one!

I could've paid off a country's national debt by now if I counted up the money spent on 74 away league ground visits (some more than once), season tickets and merchandise from the shop and my 1 x BCFC 1982 share....which I used to mention when asked on certain form filling.

In 1981 I saw New Order at the Trinity and U2 at the Locarno.

You'd go to one or two gigs a week in those days though, and there was always a good chance of seeing something amazing.

U2 at Locarno was for the October tour. I was there but left fuming as including encore their entire set lasted 45 minutes. The following day I returned my unopened October LP to Strawberry Fayre (above the jeans shop in centre of Broadmead) and exchanged it for Squeeze's East Side Story. Great album. Saw Squeeze support my heroes Dr Feelgood at the Colsunall in 1979.

I gave U2 another chance when they played the Colsunall a year later for the War tour. Wow! St Bono of Dublin and the boys were on stage for 2 hours and included him climbing up the PA stack onto the balcony.

I think the support was The Blue Cats? Aussie band I think.

Have seen Squeeze many times since including the night at the Colsunall when for an entire Glenn Tilbrook introduced their new piano player....Mr Elton John. They sang Heard It Through The Grapevine and I Saw Her Standing There.

  6. If you contact Jerry SLO (supporters Liaison Office) I would have thought he could help you in getting a Cardiff ticket.

The Turtle's idea is a good one. We went to their old ground, Ninian Park, and had to sit in the main stand as I couldn't get away end tickets.  You no doubt, don't have a Bristolian accent so it won't be a problem. Just celebrate the goals and win when you get over the border afterwards!

    Incidentally…

Went to the shop at lunch and picked up the GK shirts for the kids. The numbering on the blue shirt (3rd GK kit) when personalised was white - consistent with the numbering on the yellow kit (3rd kit). On the pink shirt (2nd GK kit) the numbering/name was black.

Although I don’t think you have to have the same colour numbering on both GK and outfield shirts, it’d be pretty odd to order a load of black letters and numbers for just the 2nd GK shirt.

So, the away kit, by deduction, will be one that has black numbers. Meaning it will either be white or potentially a blue that is a variation on the training kit.

    Hi Silvio,

As you've bought more than one shirt, what is your verdict on the quality and manufacturing of the shirt?

  8. As I've said before on other threads, I was a Luton Town fan from 1972-77. My parents were from Bristol but I was raised in Harpenden (home of Eric Morecambe) and 6 Miles from Luton.

We moved back to Bristol in time for the 77-78 season. It was easy for me to transfer my loyalties as my Dad was a die-hard City fan even though we would go to the Oak Rd week in, week out to support The Hatters.

I can only apologise to the 6 year old kid who suffered abuse that day. It is sooooo wrong.  I was a young teenager when City played at Kenilworth Rd and I too received all kinds of hand signals walking past the City coaches after the match. OK, I was wearing my scarf tied around my wrist (it was a thing in those days) and I was double his age but It doesn't make it right.

I said Oak Rd. The home end in those days was the Oak Rd. The away end was Kenilworth Rd. In my day that was an open terrace. The Bobbers Stand (so named as it cost a bob to enter) was the small terrace running alongside the touchline. In my day it was a bank of seats. In the 80s, they replaced the seats with executive style boxes.

Luton Town gave me a love for football. I was able to watch my childhood hero every Saturday - a certain John Aston. I can't remember the 66 World Cup final but I was in awe of the Man U v Benfica European Cup final a couple of years later in 1968. George Best? Pah. John Aston won it for them and that was who I wanted to be on the footy field....sadly not though when it came to playing the game.

I also had the privilege of watching Paul Futcher make his debut. Forget Ron (his twin who fortunately decided not to sign for us), Paul was an incredible player.

Even though I am City through and through now (and yesterday bought another return flight to watch BCFC in September),  LTFC will always be special to me. I still have my orange, blue and white scarf. I would still have my classic Admiral shirt had my mother not thrown it out deliberately it (due to a terrible divorce that made a national newspaper).

I returned a couple of times to Kenilworth Rd to watch BCFC. My loyalties were no longer with Luton. My last visit was in the 93-94 season. The Oak Rd was now the away end but I was a guest and sitting in the Main Stand. I remember checking my emotions and it was the team from BS3 that I was there for.

So where is this epistle going? I don't really know except that whilst it is indeed a dump of a football ground, it is my childhood dump of a football ground. That dump can't be taken away from my memory and nor will I let it.

See you at Ashton Gate in September.

COYR.....and yes, we are definitely going up this season.

I suspect he probably means a few years earlier - 83/84?

On the way back up from the depths of 1982 and IIRC I think this game sent us to top of div 4, with the first 10k+ crowd in a few years.

City are back, 'ello, ello! Let the (comparatively) good times roll.

It was on a Friday night. I think we scored fairly early on? Then it was more of a 'making sure it stayed that way' type of match. Not a good game football wise but oh boy, the atmosphere at the final whistle....Ashton Gate went mental. BS3 had a football team and as Jim D said, it was like winning the World Cup.

    Fascinating photos and information again.

Does anyone know why we wore black shorts in the early 80s? I remember reading somewhere it was to save money during those hard times because they were cheaper than white ones, but I have no idea if there’s any truth in this.

The kit manufacturer was Koffer Sports. I thought they deliberately chose black shorts purely for the fact Man U did occasionally and it looked good.

  11. Pretenders are on tonight at 7.45pm, Park stage. BBC iplayer has it.

I had the privilege of seeing them last month in Belfast in a small venue. Until that gig, I had always underestimated Chrissie's rhythm guitar playing. One of the best gigs I've ever been to.

If you want to see and hear what a modern day electric lead guitarist should sound like, then listen to James Walbourne. I was so impressed by him. He's been with them for a few years now, but boy can he play!

  12. What if Nige and SL have said to AS that this coming season is our best chance of getting promoted, if he stays? What if a gentleman's agreement has then been agreed that he'll get regular first team football?  AS  can leave with their best wishes in the second transfer window if we're nowhere near play offs.

AS hopefully realises he has a great support already around him. He knows he'll let Tommy down with having to pay all the rent...as joked by Nige. Why shouldn't he stay under that Gentleman's agreement, assuming there is such a one here?

Even if we sell him for £15m in 2nd transfer window, when we could/maybe have sold him for £25m currently, BCFC still profits by £15m!

I am genuinely excited about our prospects this season* so if SL is genuine in wanting promotion, AS has to be in the plans.

*Mind you I normally am every season but this time it feels different in a positive way.
