Because he's being paid - and breaking his contract by leaving mid-season would mean he wouldn't be.

He also doesn't strike me as the sort of chap who'd cut and run and leave his players and us fans in the lurch.

Next season, it's a different ball game. He'd need pretty concrete assurances he wouldn't be expected to operate with a below-average playing budget. He'd need assurances that profits on sales would be ploughed back in.

It's not hard to imagine that, at 60, Pearson sees this as his last job in football and he'd like to leave a legacy. He probably took the job because he saw us as like Leicester: at least in terms of fanbase/city size/potential/lack of glamour.  He'd like, if at all possible, to leave us with a promotion I'm sure.

I'm not sure he's the type to carry on if he knows he's not going to be around next season

I've had the opportunity to carefully listen to the interview, and I must admit, my perspective differs from the prevailing sentiment. In my view, Phil conducted himself quite commendably, and it's becoming increasingly apparent that Nigel is unlikely to receive or may not even desire a new contract. This signals a shift in SL's approach, as he appears to be scaling back his financial support for the club.

The rationale behind SL's change in strategy remains somewhat elusive, and we may never truly grasp it unless someone directly poses the question to him. Nonetheless, it's evident that the seemingly endless source of funds has been curtailed. I found it intriguing how SL displayed a keen interest in the sale of AS, as it suggests that without such revenue, he might need to inject more capital into the club by the end of the financial year. Consequently, it appears that the era of lavish spending is drawing to a close.

As an ardent supporter, I find myself pondering a pertinent question: "If the owner is no longer committed to injecting funds, should we, the fans, continue to pay some of the highest ticket prices in the league?" While I fully appreciate that it's SL's prerogative to manage his money as he sees fit, it's equally important for him to recognize that we, as fans, are also investing our hard-earned money based on our financial capacities. This calls for a balanced consideration of both perspectives.

Cant see that - why would Pearson stick around now, if he has no intention of being here next season?

Why commit himself, why not wait to see why Connelly does? He waits to see what he does with his first touch (outside the box).  It’s not being slow, he’s just not committing himself, making sure his angles are right.  If Connelly takes another touch, then he comes out.

Thats fine if you think Bentley is a better keeper.  i suspect difference of opinions come from you are think constitutes a better keeper?  The answer doesn’t need to be black and white either.

The person i was replying to said he thought Max had better positioning. Thats why i brought up the Hull thing.

The main reason i think Bentley was better - was that he seemed to make more "match winning" saves.

Thats not to say Max cant be better than Bentley in the future. He's just not there yet IMO.

He doesn’t have to be moving forwards.  The closer he gets, the forward movement he’s making, makes it more difficult to react.  He’s waiting to see if a right footed striker on the left side of the goal is gonna lash one with his left foot or whether he’s gonna try to manoeuvre it onto his right.

    He gets his angles right.

    IMG_8606.jpeg.2a67542f4097926e0cf16eefa89b1367.jpeg

Especially the awkwardness of Connelly trying to work it onto his right foot.

So what if the striker hit a weak shot, you can argue that’s because O’Leary delayed him.  In fairness he might’ve saved it coming rushing out too.  But your assertion that every other time the striker scores is “wide of the mark” - no pun intended.

If you watch the highlights, you'll see the hull striker picks the ball up, at least 10 yards outside the box. And is this screenshot, a second or two later - Max is a yard outside his penalty box. That is slow. He's hardly moved.

I'm not saying Max isnt a good keeper - My original point was, i think Bentley was a better keeper.

Interview was pretty clear and unsurprising:

    - recruitment before the sale of Scott was on the budget assumption that Scott would be sold.

    - they didn’t want to do the recruitment after Scott’s sale as hinders negotiation position re recruitment.

    - therefore SL was taking the financial risk on this buy now pay later strategy, ie if the Scott deal couldn’t be done, the budget would be blown so SL would have to put more money in.

    - the Scott deal was done so we are as per the budget.

    - up to SL to determine how much he wants to fund (lose!); too early to tell what the position will be in Jan.

So my view on this is clearly SL doesn’t want to fund as much as he might have in the past. However I don’t think it necessarily follows that he won’t open the cheque book a bit more in Jan if we are looking promising for top 6 (or have more injuries - TGH was brought in because of injuries). I also don’t think you can make a leap one way or the other re NP’s future. Personally I think everyone is waiting to see how we progress during the season. I doubt NP is as bothered about that as some on here.

    Bit of a contradiction there.

You just said it - SL gave us the money to make signings BEFORE the alex scott sale and if it didnt happen, SL would have plugged that gap in the finances.

So he was willing to put more money in, if needed?

Or….he could’ve come haring out erratically and not been able to set himself.  He basically bided his time, made the striker make the first move…and saved it.

I guess you’re another one who thinks every one on one should be a goal.  The evidence shows that is incorrect.

Cant believe you’re criticising an important save???

O'Leary was rooted. He didnt close him down at all. He was almost giving them a goal - He was very lucky the striker completely fluffed it. Next time - in the championship, they'll score.

Partly because his positioning is better so doesn’t need too.  He makes a lot of saves.  Some of them could easily be argued he should make but that’s partly because he is in the right position and moves his feet better than Bentley.  He doesn’t have Bentley’s fault of awful foot movement going to his left for example.   He also commands his area better and distributes quicker.

    Again, not for me.

Cant remember which game it was - possibly Hull. Hull striker went clean through on goal and Max was VERY slow coming off his line. Fortunately the stiker shot it straight at him and we got let off. He gave him too much time and the striker had an easy goal to score and any other time, it would have been a goal.

I’d say Max is no worse than Bentley at the moment and has a higher ceiling as still is inexperienced at this level

Maybe he does have bigger potential. But he does not make the saves that Bentley did on a regular basis.

Interesting that people are saying O’leary is a better keeper than Bentley……what Prem club would consider signing Max, even as a backup? 0 out of 20 i would imagine.

    Not for me.

Ah didn’t realise Famara won the Championship golden boot twice when we signed him!

Kalas as I later clarified could be agreed as a top proven championship player. Still was 4 years ago.

Point is, We have spent millions upon millions. Probably over 20m in the last 5 years (a guess)

Rovers spend 800k once and suddenly they are ambitious and we’re not ??‍♂️

Just for clarity to all the posts saying 'thought the wage budget was at its limit' or some iteration of this.

Why would any club set a wage structure with the intention to renew existing contracts and not account for the extra wages that will add to it. Just to be really clear.. they had Vyners extra dosh on the table in their mind when setting the wage structure.

You’d think this would be obvious

new flash; we could well be

    1. We have cashed in on our best player
    2. Our already light weight attack has sufferred from long term injuries
    3. A rare commodity, a signing is also injured for months
    4. We have one of the smallest in number available, squads in this div
    5. We have an owner and chairman who have gone into hiding and closed their wallets to any more signings
    6. Wage structure is maxed out, despite Kalas leaving
    7. Have you seen who our next 5 opponents are.
    8. Rumours abound of our owner who wants out and is more interested in Arenas/Bricks and Mortar than Bristol City F.C and is balancing the books to make us a better proposition.
    9. If SL continues on this track and no buyer is found we indeed will be relegation candidates, if not a strong favourite.
    10. NP will need all his will power to see out this season even this month imo.

Toothless up front, scared of playing at home, a real lack of any squad depth, going in to winter with a truly wafer-thin squad. Can't see any reason to write off a relegation battle at this point.

But we look decent away from home.
