I showed him the Southampton goal where he pelted by the defenders when the keeper went up for a corner. As pacey players go in my city supporting lifetime, very few would have been faster than he.

Anyway, back on Trundle, loved watching him play, even at Swansea with all the tricks, flicks etc. Just something different back in the day. Delighted when we signed him. One would assume he spent most of his career in lower leagues (league 1 and below) bar his time with us? Even when he went on loan to Leeds, they were division below us at the time.

Correct, other than when he returned to Swansea on loan from us, they were Championship at the time.

NWCFL Charnock Richard have 13 games in 28 days

    Colne have the same

Weather hasn’t been good, but it also has brought up the question why should teams spend all there cash on players. Maybe they should get there pitches up to a good standard, something the leagues may need to consider.

Bacup Borough were always a problem in that league, don't know if they still are. I remember a few years ago they had to play 5 in 7 days in the last week of the season in order to finish on time.

It was a great day, but the complete lack of jeopardy with the result made the match a bit anti climatic didn't it?

Yep, it was all very routine. The sort of victory we churned out for fun in that season.

Stoke city centre is incredibly bleak. Makes the most run down commercial area of Bristol look like Oxford St.

The bit around Port Vale's ground in Burslem is genuinely the most grim place I've been to in this country.

  5. In light of much recent discussion about the frequency and content of communications by our club, I thought I'd post this, released today by Mark Palios, Chairman of Tranmere.

    https://www.tranmererovers.co.uk/news/2024/march/an-update-from-chairman-mark-palios/

It's a very lengthy read which covers pretty much everything that a Tranmere fan would want to know about - from on pitch matters including transfers and budgets to potential investment/sale and new stadium, matchday experience, community work and season tickets including response to some negativity around pricing.

Of particular note is this bit, where he talks about the appointment and firing of Ian Dawes as manager last summer. Dawes was their Dean Holden appointment, the long-serving assistant who'd had a decent spell as interim manager and so got the gig permanently. It didn't work out and he was moved on within a few months of the season starting, to be replaced by Nigel Adkins who'd joined in the summer as Technical Director:

    Quote

As Chairman, I take responsibility for the appointment of Ian Dawes as manager.  I felt he had earned the opportunity to try to prove himself in that role, after having been with us for three years as assistant, earning a great reputation for his coaching ability and having had an excellent spell as interim manager in 2020, when he was undefeated in his five matches in charge, winning four of those games.  It is always something of a gamble to give the opportunity to an assistant manager to make his first step up to manager in the League and of course we now know that it unfortunately did not work out, but every young manager has to be given his first opportunity somewhere and there are benefits to continuity and knowledge of the Club and players.  In the knowledge that there was some risk in making that appointment, I sought to protect the Club by bringing in Nigel who would both be available to act as something of a mentor to Ian, but would also be in a position to step in if needed and so avoid going into the market for a manager, choosing from whomever happens to be around at the time. Nigel knows the Club as both a player and a fan, and I was pleased that he accepted the permanent position and has risen to the challenge.

Palios isn't universally popular amongst Tranmere fans and has faced criticism over various things in recent months, with a growing number thinking that he's taken the club as far as he can. But the reaction to this has been overwhelmingly positive, with plenty of plaudits for his honesty and transparency even from those who disagree with him on certain things.

    Compare and contrast.......
