Remember being determined to outshout Rovers fans when Hi ho silver lining always came on as as the last record of the night -'I see Paul Cheesley's scoring' - and more than once the rivalry continuing in more physical fashion while walking up the slope afterwards.

Ah... Stairway to Heaven .. the last chance to grab-a-girl for a smooch. Panic set in if you hadn't scored when the opening bars of that tune came on!!!!

'Clubbing it' at Redland Tennis Club was far more edgy though viz City vs Rovers.

Those softies South of the River had a much easier life!

  2. LJs position is completely untenable.

I can't see Uwe Rosler or anyone else willing to step in at this stage in the season. We've also missed the boat with the experienced coach option ala Joe Jordan and, in any event, LJ's credibility is now shot so he has to go. The cheap option is players with Tins.  Don't rate that, so we've effectively check-mated ourselves.

    What a car crash.

Maybe Ashton will produce another master stroke though.

May not be the same incident, but I remember an horrific crash in (or near) Backwell around this time when 4 young City fans were killed.

I knew one of them slightly, a home and away City fanatic who had been the year above me at school.

Yep, fear that was it. Worked a short time with Clive, who was one of the victims.

How would you rate the EE with regard to difficulty for other fans to take it, back in the day? I remember reading in a book that Arsenal fans got a nasty surprise, and came out a lot quicker than they went in.

From memory, the EE had a tight, compact feeling, which created an intimidating environment.

Birmingham took the absolute piss sometime in the late 60's arrived early and stayed in the centre pen. Somewhat bizarrely, I recall Huddersfield at a lesser scale doing the same (aided, or not, by some of your lot). From my recollection that was about it. Maybe Cardiff hung around once in that centre pen  as well.

Early 70's pre-segregation groups of away fans that managed to stay either were in the area above the pathway at the rear of the stand or in the corner and rarely strayed.

Could write a book on events during that period. Come to think of it..... what happened to that?

See higher up in the thread mention of 'Piggy' et al. Remember the Police Superintendent on the Park End 'divide' who was an absolute psycho. Wonder what happened to all the lads on that terrace? Remember we lost a couple at the time in a horrendous car crash.

The worst violence by far though was the infamous Millwall visit in the early 80's. That was just mayhem.

Think we played Millwall the week before at AG where there was plenty of trouble hence them turning up at Swindon looking for revenge, I'd say it was '72 or '73

Yep, checking the records it was 72/73 and it appears we lost on the pitch but very much the victors off it. I thought it was earlier than that but that was the back-to-back Millwall home/Swindon away fixtures.

Remember Millwall joining in at AG when we were singing 'If you're all going to Swindon'. Unbelievably though they did. So it was City on the Town End, small group of very game Millwall in the corner and Swindon dispersed around their Grandstand.

Two special trains that day. We were on the first and broke down the gates to their open end. Remember reading their evening paper on the way back headlining rioting Bristol City fans in the town centre which, I assume were those from the second train.

    Mad days.

Dissagree .. without sounding pompous or anything like that .. we never seen you on the Tote End and when we did it was all over .. and I am old enough to remember. . And we held a few parties in The East End .. The 70s and 80s were good times for the Gas .. then you got your act together. . Again I'm no hooligan but was around then .. We even joined up with you lot on a fair few occasions. . We'd be met by your lot and escorted into The East End by your lot .. Yep .. unbelievable but true .. Millwall .. Man Utd .. Those 2 games back in the day were attended by us .. plus a few times against you in the Gloucester Cup .. so when I hear these stories about City back in the day about taking the Tote End I always sigh ..

    Ummm... Dream on.

Late 60's, early 70's might have been before your time but I was in the middle of the Tote with hundreds of City. Think I recall a 5-0 evening a Glos. Cup Match where the entire centre of the Tote End celebrated by invading the tulip beds behind the goal.

Can't recall the year but segregation was introduced in the 70's and that year only a few City, including me, went in the Tote just before kick off. To be fair we were off it pretty sharpish.

With Man U, you were tolerated in the East End - just not the centre blocks :-)

We're certainly pushing out the boat on this one .. upgrading all over the ground .. you're just jealous. .

    Boat. What boat?

I knew you had ground water-issues at the cabbage patch but has it got that bad?

I guess I seriously underestimated Wally.

I thought your tent was the trigger for his interest in your Club and was going to inspire him to create an Arabian theme for your stadium revamp. Clearly, he's now scrapped that plan and picked up on you as 'Pirates' and is going to develop that idea. Pirate ship stands! Genius.

Ps has Higgs issued a statement saying they'll be 'watertight' yet?

Our new stadium is a pipe dream, we are rag bag Rovers, our owner is skint, our grotto won't return but we cower in the giant wake of you '82ers, the hugest massivest club, we are the Blue few.

I think that just about sums up the last 120 pages. You're ace you are.

And we are the gift that just keeps giving.

One thing, give us a bit of time and hopefully we'll catch up a little bit with your massive hugeness. Cheers.

The 137 pages on The Slags pales into insignificance measured against the 300 pages devoted to our new stadium. Just mention this as it shows your relative importance to us.

How's your new stadium getting on by the way? You know, the shiny new one you were singing about at your last visit to The Gate.

You have to admit though your Club has been a bundle of laughs over the last few years. Do you think the ownership transfer from Piggs to your multi billionaire Wally could be yet another chapter in your hilarious journey?

  9. I find it all pretty bizarre.

The Sags appear to be basing their appeal on theft the fact that Sainsbury's weren't very nice to them.

That may be so, but hardly something that stands up in a court of law.

I suspect the appeal judges recessed to the pub and had a good laugh.

But you sound like a bunch of ten year old arguing over who's the hardest. It doesn't matter a jot. And it's only history in that it's in the past, it doesn't need rewriting either way and certainly doesn't need defending. The history of our club is what's happened on the pitch, people fighting on the terraces is really a bit of an embarrassing chapter and should be forgotten if at all possible.

The problem being on the pitch for a Club representing a city the size of Bristol our history is more than a little embarrassing, off the pitch less so.

I take some form of perverse pride from the fact that we've never been embarrassed off the pitch during my younger days. As strange and sad as it may sound to some, I know hundreds of others share my view from a great variety of walks of life.

Time moves on though and I'm taking as much pride from our new stadium as I did in the days stood on the East and Park Ends, the Enclosure and Dolman defending our patch.

Correct - they had a 'go' but got sussed as they came in , and got mullered as they came in by the turnstile area by the old Williams

Its recounted in at least one Gooners 70s/ 80s book

They admit that they came full of swagger to teach the country bumpkins a lesson after City invaded Highbury on that infamous August day , but got a bit of a shock !!!

Spurs had a go late in the First Division 'survival season' (when we beat them 1-0 at the Gate ifI recall right with a Cormack pen) - got saved by the rozzers and taken around to the open end

Where they were startled to find yet another group of 'Park End' City throwing missiles at them, as they were parading in front of their own fans doing the 'aren't we hard' act.
